KevinR reacted to Boxer13 in New member and new builder
Hello all,
Just starting to read up on and educate myself on ship building, this site looks to to be a great help as I move forward. Something I have always wanted to do and looking forward to my first ship, which I have not picked out yet.
regards

I have found that Bandage cutting scissors work very well on sheet brass less then .015" thick.

Hello Everyone and thanks for stopping by.
Today I attempted to make my first metal parts, the Pentle and Gudgeon.
The first try went well. It looked good until I tried to trim it with the rotary tool. It heated up and twisted in the vise.
The second try went better (not smoother). I kept dropping the tiny parts on the floor. I had to re-cut a couple of times because I could not find it.
I used a hand saw to cut the tubing this time and a lot more hand filing.
I still need to notch the rudder so the gudgeon is centered under the rudder post.
This is the tin snips I purchased to cut the sheet of brass. I am hoping I can find some smaller. This pair is too large and makes it hard to see the score marks for cutting. Anyone have a recommendation?
Well that is it for today. Tomorrow is a holiday so I may get more time in tomorrow.
Untill next time,

I just bought the smallest pair of tin snips That I could find at the local Ace. Hopefully it is not to big to cut what I need.

Hello Everyone and thanks for stopping by.
Well I have just a quick update. I Competed building the rudder. I made it from 1/4x1/4" poplar, sanded down to 1/4x1/8" and then glued up. Sorry forgot to take pictures of the in-between. I then shaped it using my belt sander. This weekend I plan on starting on my attempts to make the pintle, and gudgeon for the rudder. This will be my first attempt at making metal parts, wish me luck.
Completed Rudder and Skeg.
Rudder and Skeg Dry Fitted.
Until next time!

Well I went to start making the pintle and gudgeon, but I could not not find the brass supplies I purchased last year. I ran out and bought more supplies. I am sure the missing supplies will show up next week.
Now what is the best way to cut brass sheets? The straps for the pintle and gudgeon are 1/16" wide.
Anyone with some recommendations?

Wales added. I put up two pictures, one with flash, one without. The one with flash makes it easier to see the anchor stock shape, and the one without gives a better sense of what it looks like under natural light. The wood is ebony and treenails are cherry. It has been sanded and has a single coat of minwax wipe-on poly. I'm OK with the contrast between the ebony and cherry. The treenails are deliberately a little undersized. Steel says 1 1/4", but they are more like 1.1". I think they end up looking bigger than they actually are, and when I go full size it looks (to me) too speckled and distracting.
I'm going to work on the planking below the wales next. I plan to use holly where the "white stuff" would be. My understanding is that it was used below the waterline, although there are a few posts scattered throughout the site saying it was OK to use below the wales. (It is hard to search on the site - searching for "white stuff" mostly brings up posts about snow). The waterline is not that far below the wale for this part of the ship. I think I will mark out the waterline, plank with box down to it, and holly below. It will probably have one split plank that it part holly and part box, but I did this on Rattlesnake and it worked OK. If whitestuff to the wale is historically accurate, it would be easier - any thoughts?
Thanks!
Dave

KevinR reacted to Jfreday in New to the Hobby and Site
Hi my names is Jim Freday, I'm 63 years old and have been model and trying to get it right every since I was 7 and got glue all over the windshield of my first model car build. I sent 20 years in HO Model Railroading, the trains never really ran because I was to busy building HO Scale building everything from Outhouses to Factories, some that took almost a year to build. I donated all those building to a local club when I moved across the country. The last 10 years have been spent racing HO T-Jets from the 60's, agin playing around in that scale minuture world, and Modeling Wooden Ship is always been a bucket list thing for me. I have a passion for a very narrow time in history the "French and Indian War" and when I saw Chuck Passaro 18th Century Longboat 1750-1760 I figured "I got to start some where" so I did and it was somebody from Model Expo told me to check you guys out. I dont know how much you will be hearing from me, at this stage I'm just going to trying to be a sponge.
In poking around the site I saw Chuck Passaro build of his Longboat, this is going to be a big help to me!

Hi Kevin - Tremendous progress. Looks great in the pictures, and was even more impressive to see for real at the club meeting yesterday.

Ron,
You have convinced me! I have looked through my books as well and did not find what thought I had read. I am now planning on using wire rope for my shrouds.
On an interesting note, about your note, someone gave me the plans for the Bugeye Edith Todd today.

KevinR reacted to Jean-Pierre in How much are you willing to pay
For me, the most overpriced kits are the ones that remain on the shelf or were never finished, so that my golden rule n°1 is to never buy a kit (anymore)unless the former one is almost finished. Rule n°2 is not to start a project that could prove too difficult for me, because the chance is great that it will end up on my (overcrowded) shelf. Rule n°3 is to get in love with your next model, because you will need it to overcome the challenges to come.
As said, the price ou pay is fairly irrelevant compared to the numerous hours you will have spent on your project, and also considering your legitimate pride about the end result.
Happy building and...yes, Pegasus is a good choice and a splendid model. But... there are so many fantastic builds of her on this forum, that you may find it difficult to reach their level...

Hi Kevin
She's looking really good, especially now that the hull's planked and the skeg and ruddder are fitted.
Cheers
