Are martingale stays served?

Recommended Posts

I've reached the rigging stage of the Syren, and am planning on serving the ropes.

Would the inner and outer martingale stays and back rope be served for their entire length?

I have read some different opinions on the efficacy of serving on wet ropes. One is that the service helps to keep the water out of the rope and the opposite, that the service tends to trap water in and hasten rot.  I suppose it would be  up to the Bo's'un which way to go here.  Martingale stays and back ropes get awfully wet.

The other thing to consider is the method of rigging the stays. Are they fixed lengths that are seized or shackled to the martingale, or do they run in one part through a hole.  If they run through a hole or a crook in the martingale then I would consider servicing a short length in the way of the martingale in order to reduce friction at that point.

Regards,

Henry

Thank you Henry, that makes a lot of sense! I believe on the Syren they are seized to the bottom of the martingale, so I may skip serving them. Thanks again!

For what it's worth, Lees writes a bit about the martingale stay being spliced round the the dolphin striker and the martingale backstay being seized in the bight round the striker but makes no mention of these lines being served.
