I have to/want to plank this area. It goes from almost a point to 2.5"(10 planks)in about 4" and then tapers off to the stern where it's about 1.5". Are there any options other than a horrible concoction of drop planks in that first few inches? I'm thinking I should draw this on out on paper first.

Yes, you had better plan on paper or risk utter frustration! I might observe that the lowest ceiling planks creep up the bow much too far. The outermost planks should end in the vicinity of the foremost cant frame. That will simplify the congestion up the stemson a bit!

Don,

I think it would help if you study a planking expansion drawing such as for the Squirrel on the NMM site.  The narrowest part should not be much smaller than half the widest part of the same strake on the inboard planking.  For Squirrel the smallest is about 40% the width of the widest part of the strake.  For the outboard strakes, the narrowest part is closer to 60% the width of the widest part of the same strake at its most narrow part at the forward end of the strakes.

The expansion drawings show both inboard and outboard planking.

I went to "collections" and searched for HMS Squirrel and got a "Ships cover" for a 1904 CoasT Guard cutter. I tried "Ships Plans", nothing. I clicked Vessels, nothing. How do you guys find anything on that site? I find nothing but frustration. The only time I've found anything on NMM's site is when Goolle took me in through a side door.

https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections    Then click on Collections in the top bar of choices.  Then type Squirrel in the search box and all her drawings come up.  Scroll to box number 8 and the planking expansion should come up.

You should be able to make your own internal planking expansion drawing from information that you already have.

Yes I can, and will, but I thought I would check and see if there was anything I'd missed.

Hi Don

She was the HMS Squirrel, (24) 1785.   RMG notes that the lines for this drawing are for the starboard side and were taken off in 1811, a year before she was broken up, so this was the planking as it actually existed.  The port side should be the same.  The drawing is signed by John Ancell, assistant to the Master Shipwright, Plymouth.  As to why the "HMS" is not needed in the search box, perhaps someone at RMG can answer that for you.  It never dawned on me to use the HMS when doing searches over the years so I guess I just lucked out.
