At this point I'm setting up a temporary rigg so I can test the winches before I go further. I'm waiting for the winches and the submersible brushed motor delivery. So I need the motor before I start working on the keel.

I did some tests with the cannons to give them a good patina. Ammonia vapors worked the best, salt and vinegar not so much.

Maxx, I too would like to build an RC square rigger, after I get an RC galley going. I did an RC topsail schooner as a teenager back in the late 70's when the average sail winch was about the size of three hockey pucks😄. She sailed but I had trouble tacking her; mostly failed to get past the wind's eye. I decided my fin was placed a little too far aft but then I moved out and life "intervened" as they say.

Here are some pics of my RC sailing models as they are today. The yacht was refitted a few years ago. That's a drive from a plastic model tank which was used to adjust the square topsails on the schooner.

So I'm quite interested in your model.

That is some honkin' motor!!  Is it just back-up for when the wind dies down?

Are you going to have full control of all the square sails?  I'm curious about your winches; did you order winch or drum type? I'm guessing drum since you have no bulkhead cutouts to give an arm room to swing. My old winch was a big drum which was troublesome if hauling in a slack sheet since tangles could ensue. There is a great book by Phillip Vaughn Williams, "An Introduction to Scale Sailing Models" which outlines different ways of rigging winches. Excellent read!

Looking forward to more of your build.

Allo Ian!  Beautiful boats you have there.  The motor is a 545/50T brushed (2s/4s). I put a motor in case it doesn't go upwind easily, and to be able to sail it in low wind conditions. I ordered two 6 turn winches(drums) for the sails. One will control the front mast and bowsprit sails and the other will control the center and back mast sails.

Deck planking is all done and ready for varnish. At first i didn't like the look of it because it was too uniform. so I started sanding but it smeers the black marker on the planks edges everywhere... Very ugly... So I scraped everything with a cutters blade. put more stain let it soak in for an hour and scrape again.

Because of the glue here and there, the stain didn't penetrate the wood leaving it pale. I love that effect. Now it looks weathered.

I did the nails with a super fine permanent marker. Looks great.

Curious about your plan to waterproof deck access hatches for the RC equipment.

There will be no seal on the access hatches but the ESC is waterproof and I will waterproof the receiver and servos with CorrosionX.  I don't think

much water will get in but just in case...
