Ahoy it is time for me to begin my next build this will be my first tugboat. I picked one that was originally build here in Seattle that are still around for me to go see. The lord Nelson victory tug 37’ by dumas that I was finally able to get on sale.  This project is for my wife so she has something to play with as well so I will make her do some of the work too.

 

sofar the unboxing and labeling of pieces the cut pieces are a bit rough and includes some wood and plastic? Which I may end up cutting out of some ply but I will make that decision once I get there.

today I start with the stand and labeling

 
tomorrow I will actually be able to see one close up at Olympia harbor days as I’ve been told one showed

Well I think I only found a model of the victory tug today but that works for me very inspired by this tug creosote and that may be the colors I’m lookin for. What a wonderful day doing “research”

Andrew, it was a true pleasure meeting you this Sunday at the Tugboat Festival in Olympia Washington. 
This is what Model Ship World is all about! Just like this, members meeting up at a festival to share interests. And meeting face-to-face.
Andrew it was also a pleasure to meet your significant other. I wish you would have had more time with us Olympia Model Sailor, but at same time find more information about the tug you are building.
I sorry to know that you weren't pleased with the outcome of your yacht as I was hoping to see it and take some pictures of her.
Guess there will be other opportunities!

Nothing like 13 innings and building a new boat. Frames 2-10 set keel has been laminated and stuffing box epoxied in place. This is going to be one big project. Already learning and chasing the cat away after she knocked out a couple frames

Also have a new rack to store out of the way and hopefully away from said cat

Friday night framing comes to an end and looks like planking begins tomorrow after I stock up on some more sand paper and glue. Broke one while trying to get it past the stuffing box but it all glue right back together like nothing happened. I plan on spending the weekend planking and hopefully more finish work on my other build.

About halfway done with the first phase of planking and it’s moving along nicely I am enjoying the instructions on this one very nice plans and instructions making me feel more relaxed about not being 100% perfect as it will be sanded and faired before fiberglassing. I may not be the fastest at this and the manual says it took him 24 hours over 4 days to do the planking so I figure I’ll be done eventually

Fantastic baseball and finished phase one of planking and removed the frame from the board without breaking any!

Middle of phase 3 planking and I am sure glad I have these handy clamps. It’s going slow as I’ve been way distracted with baseball this week so with the mariners having a week off before post season I hope to get this thing planked this week with any luck. It’s starting to look more and more like a tugboat hull to me

Still so distracted by October mariners so this is going a bit slower but I worked a good amount today finished phase 3 and started phase 4 planking the transom it looks rough right now but I haven’t sanded it flush yet but I finished the lower transom just as the Mariners won so I’m going to call it a day

it was an awesome day for the Mariners!! My boatyard time has been disrupted too. I took three days off to go watch them play.

Hull has been planked and the feet have been removed down to deck level. I now covered the hull in masking tape and will be sealing the inside with epoxy I need to order some fiberglass for the exterior of the hull. 
it’s my 40th birthday and this was a great way to spend it also played around with this small rc sailboat for a little bit to hold me over until my next rc boat purchase or sailing lesson

Epoxy done on the inside I was worried it would leak a lot but the tape kept that to a minimum. The next step is to sand the outside of the hull before doing the fiberglass work, the instructions do not mention anything about fairing at this point but I believe I need to do quite a bit to make it nice so I picked up some fairing additive from the chandlery and will be trying that out shortly 

on the way to Bainbridge for Sunday breakfast and stop at the chandlery our ferry had to stop as multiple orca pods as well as a couple grey whales surrounded the boat such a super cool experience and sadly no pictures just memories and another sticker on the cribbage board to remember it by

Got a bit distracted after doing that test bit on the bow and just now got around to doing the rest I really liked how this product was easy to sand so I may have gone a bit heavy that just means a bit more time sanding but I think it will turn out even better. So now it is the purple slime machine. 
 

the distraction is very exciting for me as it’s my first real boat and it will be taking a lot of my time and money for the next bit and I hope to still have the time energy and money to keep these builds going because they are bringing me much joy. But to have my own sail boat (San Juan 28) that is a dream and to have someone show me the way as we put it all back together is something I definitely do not want to pass up. You can say I’m in over my head all you want but this is exactly what I want my life to be right now
