From time to time I have been posting info on wood found in Hawaii.

Today it is Breadfruit, or as it is called in Hawaiian "Ulu".

As you can see Ulu is a wood that is attractive but has a rather coarse grain.  The wood machines well and can be carved with hand tools.  The Hawaiians primary use of the breadfruit is as a food source.  The trees are not harvested for timber unless the tree has to be removed for some reason.  As a result the wood is only available in small amounts when it is available.

Because of the pronounced grain it isn't likely to have much use in model building.  This piece was given to me by a friend who is a professional wood turner.  I plan on using it as a base to mount a model of the Bounty Launch.

My advice and comments are always worth what you paid for them.

Very interesting!  Thanks for sharing!  Being used as a base, will you stain it, then?  How does Ulu take a stain?
