HMS Victory by Glenn-UK - Caldercraft - 1/72

Hi Glen,

Pardon my ignorance but why did you cut bottom of the inner bulwark and not the top.

Thanks much,

Mort

Work progressing well on the planking of the gun deck, about 50% through this task.

The plank cut jig worked like a dream, calculated I would need in excess of 300 planks, took an 1/2 hour work to get over 200 planks cut. Decided against adding any caulking effects to the planks for this deck, but may apply caulking to quarter deck planking.

Expect to complete this task in next 2 to 3 days then I will use a razor blade to smooth the planking before I apply the varnish as it worked well on the lower planking.

Completed the planking of the gun deck this morning, just need to scrape smooth with razor blade and varnish.

The sun is shining through the window to cast a very nice gun port shadow on the deck.

It now time to line the first of the gun ports, but I think I will assemble a cannon first to check its position in respect to the gun ports.

Couple of thing to report; seemingly I have lost the stern post. It is really strange as I kept it with the rear keelson which is not missing. I have turned the shipwrights office upside down, without any luck. I could make a new one using some of the excess 3mm walnut, but I think I will ask JoTika to supply a new one, as I'm in no hurry to fit at the moment.

Secondly I dry fitted a gun carriage assembly and tried it in position. Generally Ok, but will need a bit of tweaking to ensure the gun is positioned centrally in each gun port opening.

Works started on the next repetitive task; the lining of the first 16 gun ports (without lids). I can see this is going to take a few days to complete, mainly cutting and shaping the lining for a good fit.

I had to relent and revert to using CA glue for this task!

Pictures of the first port lined, sorry about the quality of the photos.

Those are the gundeck ports, correct? Are you supposed to line all of the other ports?

Hello Mort

All the gun ports will be lined at different stages during the build. The first 8 without gun port lids need to be done first prior to planking of the inner bulwarks. I have completed 3 on the starboard side and 50% lined the remaining 5. Would expect to complete starboard side tonight.

Hello Lawrence

Many thanks for viewing my post and your very kind comments

I find it trying remove the CA glue from fingers and getting my fingers stuck on the ship as I'm trying to install the biggest problem, but have found the best method is by application of the CA glue to the gun ports rather than the linings.

I will post more pictures one I have completed the first set of gun port linings

Hello David

I did try with both wood glue and super phatic, but the linings did not seem to grab very well.

As there is plenty of room to work and I make sure I have a good fit before applying the glue I had not too many problems, only one lining out of the  20 fitted had to be replaced due to the fast grab time of the CA glue resulting in a bad fit.

I hoping the use of the seats (and a bit more patience) for the 1mm set back gun ports will let me use my super phatic glue.

Hello Glenn.

Your gunport linings look excellent.  Nice and straight with the 1mm reset looking very good.  I used ca glue with a 15 second set up time and had no problems straightening a few of them when necessary.  So you're really moving along nicely and before you know it you'll be attaching gun port lids.  Keep up the nice work and plese keep the pics coming.  Regards,

Jerry

Couple more picture of the inner bulwark which is now completed. Just got to decide if I also will fit the waterway, stringer and beam shelf, as shown in Gil log.

Copied from Gil's Log

Plans call for simply flat planking for the ceiling (inboard lining of the hull), while on the real ship, the inner lining consists of a waterway, stringer, ceiling and beam shelf.

Hi Glenn,

You're moving along really well with your planking and your gun port linings look fantastic.  Well done.  As for waterway, stringer, and beam shelf.  I sorta kinda copied from Gil too, but only did waterway and stringer.  The stringer on mine is styrene quarter round.  I think putting the waterway and stringer on give you a really clean looking deck to bulwark joint...and also covers up any mistakes around the edges of the deck. Here's a pic of my efforts there.

Hi Patrick

Many thanks for your visit and great pictures. I think your inner bulwarks and gun deck look great and makes me more inclined to fit the additional pieces. I was looking at some pictures of the inner bulwarks from the actual ship earlier as well showing the waterways, stringers etc.

Was able to spend 5 hours working on the ship today. Completed port side gun port (without lids) lining and about 1/3 of inner bulwark planking. Should finish planking tomorrow night.

I have ordered some additional material from CMB for the waterways, stringers etc. not forgetting the replacement eyelets for the stauctions as recommended by Shipyard Sid, many thanks for the heads up!

Next task is to continue on with second planking to top of gun deck gun port linings.

A couple of good days working in the Victory; completed planking of the inner bulwalks, completed fitting linings to gun ports 3 to 10 and painted red orce and completed the 2nd planking to above the gun deck gun ports.

Also checked and cleared all gun port, as necessary.

According to manual the next task is to fit the wales. Also still need to fit stern post
