Hello all,

Im building a cross section of HMS Victory.I put two barrels across on top of the ballast on PS and now I was wondering if there is a rule of thumb for the storage of barrels, longitudinal as on SB or across as on PS ?

Kind regards, Jantje

They were stored both ways it seems. According to the book 'Anatomy of the ship Diana' barrels were stored oriented fore and aft in a bed of shingle ballast with more barrels stored on top of them athwartships, presumably well secured. So it appears both methods are correct.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not necessairily it was empty at the end of the trip: Empty barrels were filled with sea water to readjust the trim because of the lack of weight :-)
