JSG, thanks for the compliments. This bent my first build (hope to complete her soon but rigging it is a little frustrating). I coiled my ropes then spliced them into the blocks where the cut would be hidden. The coiling method I used I stole from someone here on MSW. You use two pieces of clear thick plastic to sandwich the roped and wind it around a pin stuck through the middle. Haven't tried to coil rope while it's on the model. I think that would be super difficult.

Thanks for the tip. How do you keep the rope together when you remove it from the jig? Is the "rope" coated, say with diluted white glue?

Yea, sorry about omitting that part. Wet the line with watered down Elmer's glue. Leave it in the jig to dry overnight. Here is a pic:post-1401-0-30520300-1385327610_thumb.jpg

I used pieces of a baseball car protector. It's a thicker plastic and the Elmer's doesn't stick to it. The pin can be removed once the coil is made and the clamps are applied. PS this plastic is what I used for the windows on my rattlesnake. It doesn't fog up if you used superglue, which is my preferred glue.

Thanks Wolf.

I guess that leads me into a bit of an update. I'll be finishing my model off without sails. I tried to make sails, but my sewing skills are not up to par. I actually lost alot of motivation to finish the san fran because of the sails. I hoping that a little time away from her will make me miss her and eventually finish what I have started.

Eric, step away and come back when you are ready. I had to do the same thing on mine. It is better to do that until the urge to pick her back up strikes again, rather than get so frustrated you trash all your beautiful work. She can be finished without sails and will look great too, but what was the problem with the kit sails? I used the kit ones, and they work pretty darn good, they may not be accurate, but neither is the running rigging so together they make for a display worthy ship

Shaz-The thread used on my kit sails is cheesy. Makes it look like a ship you could buy in a souvinier shop. I will rig it without the sails, but just like you said I had to step away. It was the sail making that frustrated the heck out of me. The only sewing experience I had was making a pillow in home economics back in high school.

I am betting there is a seamstress somewhere in your town...if you took her the kit made sails and your cloth I would bet she could make you new sails for less than $20. Not a whole lot involved in those particular sails, all straight lines and such, my bet is she could whip them out in less than an hour, might be worth checking into...

I am afraid that my SF will end up with the same fate. This will be my first and only AL kit. Everything overall receives a poor grade, hindsight is that I fell for a good looking kit.

I fell into the same trap. I was good to learn on and it looks good, but not at all an accurate representation. At least now I know what appeals to me. I see you have a model shipways kit on the shelf. I have three MS kits on my shelf, and all of them are buy far and away better than anything AL produces. I view AL kits like what you would buy in a souvenir shop.
