HMS Bounty by Dukekars - Billing Boats

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I live in Nova Scotia a 40 min drive from Lunenburg Nova Scotia, Canada where the 1960 Bounty was made for the movie. I learn to sail in Navy League Cadets at the age of 13. Always like the sea, love the book, movie and history of the Bounty. When she sank during Hurricane Sandy on 29 Oct 2012 I decided I would build her.

Ships Log 1/43. (first entry 43hrs in)

Frame and keel in. Lots of research to get to this point. Billings directions are for not. Scale Blue print is very good my most valuable tool. Moving on too bow and stern filler. Starting to study the planking and bit worried seems to give lots of trouble (Bluff Bow). I am sure I will have lots of questions.

Advice. When told to do something do it. Read in this form to label/number and draw all parts. Only numbered half and I am still paying the price for that error.

Help: I have a small twist in my keel, seems to be mainly at the stern. Researching fixes any advice would be great.

Thanks Going A Shore

Duke

g'day Duke, good to see another Bounty, albeit a different kit to mine. you are lucky that there is a great build log on this site for your particular model. me, i have no such reference i'm afraid. anyway onto your keel problem - i reckon you could probably fix that by using filler blocks or rods between problem bulkheads until the alignment is right. i don't know how many models you have built but i have done a few and i can assure you that the keel and bulkhead definitely need to be 100% correct alignment and perpendicular before you attempt to do the first planking. in fact i reckon this somewhat boring and seemingly easy part of the build is imo perhaps the most critical part of the build for if you get this wrong pretty much everything afterward will also be wrong and out of alignment. anyway happy building over there in canada :)

cheers chris

G/day from Oz Duke.

I am building the same Bounty Kit as you and I seem to have a slight twist also in the keel towards the stern. Haven't tried to fix it yet. But if I come across any ideas will pass them on to you. I am also newbie and have only just started building I am in the process of building Bounty's Jolly boat and seems to be coming on fine. Anyway cheers and good luck with your build

Hi Duke

Good to see your build log is up and running.

As for your keel problem what Chris recommends is good advise.

Filler blocks at the bow and stern are definitely the way to go on this one, these will be a great help when you do the planking. I found this job extremely difficult on my build, I'm sure things would have been a lot less problematic had I used blocks.

As this is a single plank kit you will need to be very precise with your planking unless you decide to double plank then you can afford to make a few mistakes as the second planking will cover them up, any way good luck with your build I look forward to seeing your progress.

Ships Log 2/64:

Have made some progress. Managed to get 90% of frame twist out with blocks between certain frame pieces. got another 5% out when I glued in the bow filler blocks. Currently working rear filler blocks. Very small twist left at this point. Deck fits OK did a few planks on deck just to get an idea where I am going with that.

I thank every body for advice its been a big help.

Help: I have one frame third from front starboard side that extends out past deck a bit. I am assume my fix is to sand down probably the wide of two planks tapper it into the deck so planking will sit flush. Also a tiny little bit on the next frame as well but very little all the rest port and starboard are all good.

Ships Log 3/70

Been bit of a busy week looking for model time was short. Spent the week planking the deck, and shaping stern filler blocks. Both are turning out very nice. I should have taken picture from the stern. I enjoyed this part still lots to do sanding down edges and planks. Still researching the hull planking. I also built a wooden block for bending planks one bow pattern on stern. So looking for an old steam iron to go with it. All is good.

Going ashore I'll check in next week. Cheers

Hi Duke

I am watching your build very closely. I am going to start on the bow and stern filler blocks in the next couple of days as this seems to be the way to go. Getting close to Christmas and so many things to do so don't think I will get much done between now and the new year. I see yours is starting to take shape. Must start a build log of mine.

Ships Log 4/78

Ha guys progress is slow but moving ahead. Planking the deck was not to bad. The photo is with two coats of varathane. I have a close up as well but it showed more flaws then I could see with my eyes, which gives me a good idea if I want to see close detail in low light just take a picture. Fitting the rails along the side and a few bow pieces probably glue them up some time tomorrow. I seem to cut 5 pieces before I am happy with the fit. After that its on to study of hull planking, and practice until its time to go home for xmas. Will not start hull planks until 19 Jan. when I return.

Going ashore.

Ships Log 5/82

Ha guys just got started again after a month off over Xmas. I have started the painful, process of planking. This is certainly going to consume time. As most know Billings plans/notes etc are very poor. I had great difficulty determining the difference between Bulkhead # 4 and 7, as a result I have to shim on and sand down the other. I lost the 50/50 chance even with hours of measuring and trying to determine which one went where according to the plans. All well all we have in life is time.
