British Steam Coaster Masefield,1/72 scale,RC, by Stephen Allen

I built Masefield as a depiction of a typical rather than specific British Steam Coaster of the late 1920s. I have mostly built warships to date, but want to build more merchant ships from this era. This model was an opportunity to learn about the different requirements of merchant ship modelling, especially the need to follow the then current rules of the classification societies.

The overall appearance and cargo handling gear is based on Holme Force, a real raised quarterdeck coaster built in 1928 and illustrated in C V Waine’s book Steam Coasters. The basis of the build is a Deans Marine fibreglass hull intended for a 1/96 scale Three Island Tramp. This had about the right dimensions and lines to create a smaller ship in a larger scale.  I cut the centre island and poop deck down and built up a new quarterdeck as the basis for the scratch built superstructure, hatches, masts and handling gear. The standing and running rigging is courtesy of my Syren Ropewalk. I’ve incorporated a variety of commercial fittings, modified and improved for this build, as well as scratch built steam winches and other bits and bobs. Because I borrowed the arrangements of Holme Force, I also decided to honour the ship’s handsome paint scheme. Pictures are of the completed model on the bench, and on its very successful maiden voyage. I’ve made lots of mistakes on this build, and learnt a lot, which I will apply to the next build.

How did you do the rivets on the hull and stack?  They are perfect for 1:72 scale.

That's a beautiful scale model Stephen. And, it's RC to boot!

Very nice details on this three-island-steamer. Wayne's book is full of inspirations. The good thing about the 1920s is that there are a lot of contemporary textbooks on shipbuilding and ship details available.

In this case the rivet detail is Archer Fine Transfer resin decals. You cut these to appropriate line lengths and apply as a waterslide decal. These are from a 1/48 scale sheet intended for aircraft modellers.

Brilliant work, subtle, but very effective and realistic weathering on that hull!
