San Juan Nepomuceno by haughtonb - Artesania Latina

Recommended Posts

This is my first build. I am not sure how to start a log, but here I go. I will go over some of the mistakes I made and how I fixed them. I tried using the Fair-A-Frame, but found that just using a square was simpler since the bulkheads touched the keel. In the first photo there is a bulkhead that was glued lower than it should be. I glued a strip on top of it and sanded it down to the correct level. I have a few photos and will add them shortly.

Hi Haughtonb, I had similar problems with my first build, I only wish I was aware of this site then.  You will find a great deal of help here, and I wish you many happy hours of ship building.

Best wishes

I am surprised that there was only a few mistakes. My parts list was almost all confetti and the plans are missing. I am putting it together with only pictures. I cant wait to finish this and start on my HMS Victory. If anybody has plans for the San Juan Nep. please contact me it doesn't mater what size or brand.

I am almost finished shaping the bulkheads to accept the first layer of planks. In the photo below the main deck was suppose to stop where my thumb is. I had to break all the planks off and start over on the deck. I am beginning to think starting a model with no plans was a big mistake for my first build.

Hi Haughtonb, Have you searched the Forum on this site? You will find a lot of photos which might be of help to you.  You could also ask if they can help with plans.

Best wishes

haven't had much time to work on it. Working on shaping the stern and thinking of filling in gaps with filler so I can picture it better. What is a good filler? Easily sanded and  ease of application. I am thinking of just using bondo since I have some and know how to use it.

Bondo might be a bit too hard which means you'll end up sanding wood more than filler.   I use Elmer's Wood Filler or MinWax's.

Hi, I hope you enjoy this build as I do with my SJN

what exactly you need with plans, i can try and scan them and email them to you.

The small book with instructions is easy to be scanned, the rest plans with rigging is harder, you may need those plans to make the masts since those plans are 1:1

anyway this is my build log from my san juan, incase you havent already browse it

Kostas. I have the rigging plans and a book with photo's that show's detailed build. I must be missing the small instruction book. I think I can build it know w/o instructions, but if I run into any problems I will contact you and I will also check out your build when I have time. Did this model come with any build plans like the rigging or just the picture book and small book? I will go through the rigging plans and see how many I have. I think it is 1 large sheet for rigging.

Thanks

I think it had

1. small book with pictures and another one with details in text,

2. four or five plans for rigging, (maybe more) that are in actual size (1:1), its very helpfull when i was making the masts, also it had one big plan with ship picture, from above, and from side almost in 1:1 (i think maybe 10% smaller)

to be honest for the rigging I havent used kit plans at all, I mean  I may give a glance now and then, but I am following book instructions and various pictures

I made a lot of modifications/improvments, so I hardly used the original manual
