With Alclad you do neet to spray the metallic onto a gloss black finish in a lot of cases and the black has to be cellulose or the metallic will strip it.

normanh got a reaction from dashi in HMS Snake by jim_smits - Caldercraft - First Build
From memory when I rigged my Snake I started mast at a time working upwards and outwards. I found it worked for me pretty well as the last thing you want is to struggle inboard on the decks with everything else in place.

I shaped my spars totally by eye and hand, I never felt the need to use a lathe or drill for that purpose although I did for the actual masts to ensure that the caps fitted accurately. Shaping the spars I found so easy and not a difficult job at all and not taking an excessive amount of time. I used a simple rule to makrk the tapers. A felt pen dot on the precut lengths, the dot being the finished diameter required. I used no knifes just a fine file and abrasive papers from coarse to fine. The octagonal sections were laminated with 0.5 to 1mm basewood strips up fron filed squares in the spar the taking of the corners to form an octagan. It really was that simple.

I think the museum is still free until you add in the observatory and Cutty Sark then you pay. There is no way I would pay in its current fashion - Wooden Walls display removed from view, one of the greatest model period model displays I have seen. Not been there for a couple of years but I wouldnt be supprised if the George V model has been moved out.

I totally agree with you shipman on the collections being removed from public view a sad moment for all, so much so I dont think I have visited these two establishments since. NMM biggest crowd puller is now the map on the floor for kids to run around on, its very popular brings in the families but does it meet the brief of the museum? I am not convinced but in a way it does demonstrate navigation. I honestly thnk its so shortsighted by these so called museum professionals but at the end of the day it does bring in the punters.

Try reading the information sheet given with prescription medicines for side effects - I take a couple one for blood pressure, the laugh is we take these to either control or cure a medical condition.

I have worked with chemicals for most of my working life and trained and qualified in chemistry, all substances should and are assessed in their intend application and must always be treated with respect and not abused.

normanh got a reaction from iiihmb in Yard arm tapering
I shape mine purely by hand and eye, marking the end grain with a black dot the size/diameter I wish the yard needs to finish up. Then I mark the position from where the taper starts. Using a good small hand file I file to the end from the start mark carefully rotating the yard on the edge of my work bench until the correct profile is obtained. I have used this technique on all 3 of my models to date now never fails. Just to finish I twist the yard in some fine abrasive to give a good finish that's about 30 in total. No machines used or needed.

I've always used a matt varnish that's white spirit based enamel - Humbrol in the UK in a small small tin, covers well and seals the wood, no sheen or shine. Silk finish makes the wood look a like its wet and a gloss is far to shiny.

normanh got a reaction from mtaylor in Fitting the yards to the masts
I put a small brass pin into the yard to fasten the yard to the mast as a blind fixing , then the rigging, its hidden and holds everything in place very easily.
