THANK YOU JOHN. HOWS THE LAND DOWN UNDER THESE DAYS?

AT THIS TIME I AM WORKING ON THE CUDDY AT THE STERN AND NEXT THE THIGH BOARD AT THE BOW. RONNBERG INSTRUCTED TO ADD THE PANELS A PIECE AT A TIME. I DECIDED TO INSTALL IT AS A COMPLETE PANEL. IT JUST SEEMED EASIER FOR ME.
BEFORE I WENT INTO DOING THE CUDDY, HE ALSO INSTRUCTED TO GLUE IN PLACE THE TWARTS. I DECIDED TO LEAVE UNGLUED AND GLUE THEM IN PLACE WHEN I WAS DONE IN THE AREA THEY WERE GOING TO BE PLACED. IT JUST LEFT ME MORE ROOM TO GET MY FINGERS IN AND OUT OF THERE.

I DECIDED TO START MAKING THE BITS HERE AND THERE THRU OUT THE BUILD SINCE THERE WAS SO MUCH TO DO. THOUGHT IT WOULD BREAK UP AND GIVE A BREAK FROM BUILDING THE BOAT.
I MARKED THE LOCATIONS OF THE STAVE LINES FROM THE PLANS AND USE MY TINY FILE TO SCRIBE THEM ON THE BASSWOOD BLANK. I DIPPED MY FINGER TIP INTO SOME WATER AND WET THE BACKSIDE. LET IT SOAK FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND THE BLANK BENT VERY EASY FOR THE FORM. I ALSO DECIDED JUST VARNISHING THE STERN TUB AND THE REST OF THE BUCKETS AND SUCH. IT JUST LOOKED NICER TO ME.

    cheers Mario.......

    HI EVERYBODY,
RIGHT NOW I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF INSTALLING THE FRAMES TO THE MODEL. BUT WHERE I HAD LEFT OFF WAS PLANKING THE HULL. I USED BASS WOOD BECAUSE I DO PLAN ON PAINTING THE MODEL. NOW FOR THE INTERIOR I AM CONTEMPLATING NOT PAINTING.
THE PLANKING WAS ACTUALLY VERY EASY TO DO EVEN WHEN YOU HAD TO PLACE THE SEAM BATTENS FIRST AND THEN THE PLANK. PLUS I MADE SURE I SANDED THE BEVELS NEEDED ON EACH PLANK TO SIT PROPERLY. WHICH IS OUTLINED IN THE BOOK. I TRACED THE PATTERNS FROM THE PLANS, MADE MY PLANK AND CONTINUED ON FROM THERE. I WOULD PLACE TWO PLANKS ON ONE SIDE THEN I WOULD SWITCH TO THE OTHER SIDE. THIS KEPT ME AWARE THAT I WAS INSTALLING THE PLANKING EVENLY ON THE PORT N STARBOARD SIDES CORRECTLY.
ONCE DONE I SANDED WHAT I COULD WHILE ON THE JIG, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR AREAS. ONCE I INSTALL SOME OF THE FRAMES I WILL REMOVE THE REST OF THE BUILD JIG TO SAND AND CLEAN UP AS BEST AS POSSIBLE. MAINLY TO REMOVE BITS OF GLUE.
SO HERE IS A FEW PICTURES FOR TO SEE WHAT HAS BEEN DONE. APOLOGIES FOR TAKING SO LONG TO POST PICS.
OOOOPS JUST NOTICE I HAD "CAPS LOCKED"! OH WELL.

    Hello all,
I gave my whaleboat kit to a friend of mine to try and giver it a go. Once done he gave me what he had left and I decided to scratch build one out of basswood and other woods. I started the build a long while ago. But really got busy in life, and with this virus thing going on and being told to stay home else face getting pulled over and fined up to 1000.00 dollars. So having sometime with the models again.

Jeezz! The building jig is a practicum in itself...

    hello Everyone,
Just wanted to say I am done with this model. I drifted away from this in November last year because of the holidays. 2021 was a rough year with my wife, 2 of our 5 kids, all getting very sick. We all pulled through it.
But she wasn't done with us yet. My dad past away 2 days after Christmas which was very hard and still is for all of us. God blessed with him for 91 years. My mom n dad were married for 64yrs. We are a big family that has always remained close. So 6 months later it is still hard and it will be that for a while.
So I disappeared for a while after our loss. But just trying to get going with life again and i guess that means working with models again.
I have one picture of how I will mount and display the boat. I did not want to pile all the equipment into the boat because you wouldn't be able to see the boat. HAHA! I hopefully will add more pictures later. When I am done with the display board. I hope all of you are doing well in this crazy world of ours.

later to you all and have a good day!!!

So back to my boat now that I fill good to work on it. Just couldn't have a good time until our family pulled thru this mess.

I am just about finished with all the bits that go on and in this boat. So now going to get the display board going and just a few more items to create and i will be done.

The parts with the clamps are the flags. Still need to paint the material red. The oars just need the stripes painted on them and they are done.

THANK YOU JOHN, MARK, N JOHANN, AND ALL THE LIKES TOO!!!

    OK NOW HERE WE GO....

I AM COMING DOWN NOT VERY MUCH ELSE TO DO ON THE BOAT ITSELF. SO I WILL BE FOCUSING ON ALL THE EQUIPMENT THAT GOES INTO THE BOAT. PLUS HOW I WILL DISPLAY THE MODEL. SO THINGS MAY BE SLOWING DOWN A BIT ON MY PROGRESS. I HOPE NOT TOO MUCH BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO GET BOTH MODELS DONE SO I CAN GO ONTO OTHER PROJECTS.

I DECIDED TO GO WITH A DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION ON THE SAILS. BY ADDING A JIB, BOOM AND A GAFF. JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD LOOK GOOD AND IT WAS AN OPTION WITH SO MANY CONFIGURATIONS THESE WHALE BOATS HAVE.

Thank you for the likes everyone!

Now for the thwart knees and the pads. I decided to use basswod because the thwarts were boxwood. Since both are light colored I figured it would make for a nice contrast. I pre- bended one of the strips ahead of the knees. No reason.

Once I figured the curve to the knee I made a little template so I would have the same curve for all 12 knees.

Made all the knees a little proud so I could just do a little sanding in place, till they were flush with the wales. The one knee to the extreme left is completed.

Even though I pre- bended the strips I Soaked the strips for about a minute and placed them on the knees and cloths pinned them for a few minutes so they would conform to the curve on the knee. I cut them to length and glued them in place afterwards. Per the practicum this was going to be done with 2 lamination's. The clothes worked very well, because the inside of the pin was of course wood and rounded  which helped keeping the pin from leaving a mark on the soft basswood.

    working on the 2nd lamination.

Both lamination's in place, glued, sanded, and ready for wipe-on poly. The two different tones of light colored wood came out real nice for my taste.

And how I left it last night. Just a little finish and we be done.

    LATER YOU ALL!!!

I can pretty call this area done, except for the drilling of the hole for the mast. The instruction say to do this ahead of time. For me I figured I can better locate where the mast hole should be placed.

Like I mentioned earlier. I was going with not just the main sail, but also add the jib. It required me to add a few more bits at the bow. The jib cleats and jib staple. The staple was in some boats just for the simple reason that they would at times run the line to the jib thru a staple located just under the chock.
