I like having the plank bent to shape before I shave it down. I use an x-acto blade. I shave off bits from the surface that I am trying to match with the plank that is already in place. I would sand with 220 grit after shaving. I would go back and forth many times until satisfied with the mating of the planks. Being care not to do too much each time. You can see the amount of material I took in the pics above. One fit I glue. I am developing a likeness for pins vs the clamps to get the plank to dry. Mostly it's a combo of the two.

Here's a weird analogy.  Picture ten runners running a 1500 meter race.  They start in individual lanes and run a couple hundred meters.  Then they're allowed to cut into the center lane and they all bunch up there.  So now there are 10 runners in one lane (more or less).  If you were to trace the path of all of the runners, you would have a tapering into the narrow one lane from the wide ten individual lanes.  There's still 10 runners but they are taking up much less space on the track.  Weird, I know.

Theo, you are a god send.  Your pictures should be published in the kit's instructions instead of the vague, almost finished ones they provide.  By seeing your's I am getting a real good idea of how this whole planking job needs to go.  And thanks for clearing up the issue of stairs, 4 or 5.  It was making me crazy trying to find that 5th stairway.  You noted that the stairs are not very authentic in several ways.  I found that true as well and made a couple enhancements to fix the problems.  I am planning to do some computer work today and post pictures, but just for the record, what I did was add a footer to give the staircase some decent gluing surface (I am a firm believer in making things stay in place once they are put down), and I added the missing railings cause I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt.

I have two questions....First, it appears that you are holding the model down on the work pad using L brackets and (here's the Q) a bolt through the bottom ends of the keel.  Is that right?    And second question, are those bungey cords you are using to strap in the planking tight, or just cord with small springs on the ends?  Either way does that work pretty well?

Here's a couple pics of my stairs.  I guess I shouldn't butt into your log, but I can't help it.

The lowest strake here isn't glued yet - just moulding!!

Here are my first bits of planking basically the same both sides so I won't bore everybody.
What I would  like is some advice now. Do I keep working downwards for a while or start again at the false keel and work upwards?
Goodness only knows how I am to bend this incredibly tough wood (2mm x 5mm lime) around the stern end and get it to stay put when glued.

    Morning, Scotland!

Mike, in fact I am at almost the same stage as yours, with almost the same boat as yours and vith ABSOLUTELY the same dilema as yours - should I stop at the middle (whatever they call it) and start from keel upwards, or just procede downwards.
For what I know from reading a lot they all say start from the keel and meet in the middle.
For what my fingers feel like... go on as you have just god used to.... and maybe shoot yourself in the head in the end.....
Today is the day for me to decide.
So I would ask you - did you make your choice, how far have you gone and could you post some pics?
BTW, are you doing the first planking? is it followed by second or not? My AL is a SINGLE planking model, which makes things even more dreadful..
Besides, it is 2x5 mm walnut, which is quite more dogged than lime

No matter what general method you use to pre-bend a plank. Clamping it the exact spot you want to glue it while it's still wet, will give you a nearly net shaped plank for easy gluing. Look at my build of the USS Constitution to see some of the tricks I used.
    Good luck...planking is not easy!

Look forward to seeing how you represent the plants.

I think when, IF, I build this one I might do her as she was prior to departure...it's easier

Can't wait to see some more progress on this one, come on chop chop

    Andy,

All the above is great advice for your query. The only part of your question which hasn't been addressed is:

For myself, at least, I have found that you cannot soak for too long. The wood will only take up so much water. As a slooooow modeller, I sometimes leave my planks soaking for days on end before using them. Then, when I am ready, I'll select a single plank, quickly wipe it down, then bend using some of the methods listed above.

Sometimes, if a plank is not fitting precisely, I'll pop it back in the soaking tub again for a day or so, then re-do the bend.

My preferred method is to clamp the newly bent plank into position on my model and allow it to dry completely before fixing it in place.

    Thanks for welcome words Al.
Yes, this was my first post and definitelly not my last ;-)
I joined in September, when I got the Bounty as a birthday present. Then, as you can guess... I lost the password,,,, Besides, i couldnt find an AL Bounty fresh thread...
Yes, i saw other guys work on Bounty and really appreciate what everyone is doing. But what is most interesting to me is exactly the AL kit. It's good to have a chat with someone who reads the same drawing, touches the same pieces of timber, faces exactly the same problems as yours.. Pity we have a big time difference and chat will go slow, but as you said before - NO RUSH, right?
Soon I will open my own build log, that decided. I just need some time to read about forum rules, uploading pics, etc. And yes - time is an issue for me!! Unlike others all I can afford to spend in my beautifil workshop is 3-5 hours a week... And for writing the log I have to steal from my working time   (the good news is that I do not have a boss to fear of  )
    See u guys!

Dom, thanks for the suggestion re sanding.  I have been undecided as to whether or not to varnish this cabin structure but my wife makes the final call and she said absolutely.  So yeah, I need to sand off the roughness.  I will do the varnishing as well prior to installing.

Theodor:  Welcome to MSW and to our Bounty community.  Are you actually building the kit by Artesiana Latina or Bounty by another kit manufacturer?  There are a lot of Bounty posts on MSW, most of them being other manufacturers.  But there are some good ones by AL that have been posted.  You should also look at the others even though they may not be exact.  Bounty by Mike Dowling is in progress and has good photos and explanations of do's and don'ts.  You'll learn a lot by just looking at other builds.  Is this really your first post?  Been a member since last Sept and not had any questions?  That's doing quite well, and independently at that.  I hope you start your own build log and I look forward to seeing your progress.  Have you done other ships in the past or is this your first attempt at ship modeling?

Thanks Mike.  I am thinking about furled sails for the ship.  I don't want to hide my 1000+ hours of rigging!

Hi there, nice to see how you are getting along. Your first planking doesn't look too bad to me. She is an awkward little boat, the first one I tried and I didn't have a clue about planking. Still don't to be honest. She is a bulbous beasty as is the Bounty I am trying to do now but will make up into a smashing little model. I have to confess I didn't try to do the sails but did do all the rigging. Anyway enough of my blether. Good luck to you and having had peritonitis a couple of years ago you have my sympathies so I hope you get back to good health quickly.

Al I've not read through your entire post but just looking at the photo's things look great. Really looking forward to getting this kit myself now.

Can I make one suggestion though? If you look at the second photo, you will see the wood has lots of fibres, almost looks like fluff...get yourself some really fine grade sandpaper and sand over the wood before fixing it in place. Reason being is when you come to paint or stain/varnish the wood, all that burr will show up, particularly with stains.

It's a lesson I learned painfully some time ago

Other than that, keep it up

Well thanks guys, I am blushing but I know you can't see!!
Windows 8 is the worst thing since Windows 95 - that worked just fine!

So, do you think it's time I started at the keel and work up?
So far, apart from the stern a little bit I haven't got involved in much lateral stress to the strakes. Is this good or bad?
I know I have to wait until I have finished the first go but, inevitably there is some unevenness evident. Should I just sand everything smooth, fill it first or a bit of both?

PS. Sorry about your cold Dom, just keep knitting!

Here's a FREE download of a program called Paint.net - I've been using it for years. There are a lot of Tool Upgrades available as well (I can't remember where at the moment).

Many thanks again everybody. I have read loads and tried lots but I will try a kettle or steamer and let you know how I get on. It has been suggested to me that it may just be the particular wood I have got which could be right. I haven't had this problem before but I haven't had anything quite so thick to bend round such acute angles.
