Mike Dowling got a reaction from CDW in Fokker Dr 1 by Mike Dowling - FINISHED - Artesania Latina
There has been a slight problem with the kit. The cowl that goes over the fuel tank etc sits a wee bit too high at the back. It fits fine at the front and I notice on the instructions photographs that the discrepancy is there as well so it's not my fault. As a result the machine guns also sit about 3mm too high so I have had to modify their mounts somewhat. It's taken me ages but I think they look ok now and won't look too noticeable. I should say that the guns themselves were an absolute beast to make up. Rolling brass is great fun and those cross hairs are so tiny they would break in a breath.

Well so much for my covering skills ! The next stage as far as I was concerned was to cover the tissue with dope and then paint it. Bad mistake.
I am sure that is how I did it when I was making flyable planes in my youth. Anyway I had to rip it off and do it again hence the delay in a post.
The way to do it is as follows. Cover the wing with tissue as tight as possible without tearing it. Wait for it to dry. Then paint it gently with dilute PVA. That makes it go all soggy and look dreadful but, when it dries you have a lovely tight smooth finish. Then apply two coats of dope/laquer and then paint it with the required colour.
So, my third attempt looks like this and at last I can start putting bits together.

Apart from relocating the fuel tank in the correct position (!!!!)
the bottom wing is done unless of course I decide to cover half of it.

The trick was to soak them first and then put them on and work around the bend very slowly. The result, 18 capped ribs and no breakages !

Now look folks, maybe you don't understand what I am trying to decide about, but, for those who haven't sen the Sopwith - this is what I mean.

The magazines for the guns, the oil and fuel tanks are installed. The fuel tank was huge struggle as in order to fit it I had to file away quite two quite big areas on the underside to accommodate the legs on the firewall mount. I got there in the end. The firewall is held on by four 0.5mm bolts theoretically with nuts on. There is no way on this planet I could get the nuts on so I just had to cheat and glue them. They would be very hard to see anyway.
Basically the fuselage is now done except for 'wood' panels to go on the sides - they are made of metal but have to be disguised as wood. This depends on whether I cover half or not which is where I need your help viewers !
Otherwise the next stage is to start on the lower wing.

All the cockpit instruments are now installed. I took the precaution of laying in the cables before putting the seat in and am glad of it. I don't think I could have threaded them through some of the tiny holes afterwards.
Next step is to install all the cross brace tensioning cables and there are quite a few!!

It will not look as though I have done very much but, all the required 'c' shaped pieces are on. I think I fitted about 28 although loads more were supplied. Each one had to be filed down after removing from the sheet - that was fun!Maybe that is why there were so many allowing for the fact that you were going to 'lose' some!
I thought you might like to see one! It'son the end of my finger.
I have also added some other parts on the fuselage frame. I have also painted it all ready for the next step which is fitting the cockpit accessories that I have already made up.

I also discover that the piece behind the pilots seat is called a bulkhead though it doesn't really compare to that on a boat. Anyway, I have 'rigged' it on !

work continues on the port side posts and railings, plus some exterior skirting boards and my innovative way of getting them to stick in place.

hey mike, they are not painted at all. its just the light. they are the same dark color as the pics above them. will try to get better pics today. the only things painted on this boat are the stark white area's and the red paddlewheel. everything else is natural wood with coats of acrylic matt clear on them for protection and to enhance the natural wood grain and color. I will admit though, they do look a lot lighter in those pics.

The posts I mean, not the railings.

Looks good but why did you paint them white ? They looked so good dark.

Hey Eric, yes I got the Chaperon for Christmas last year so she is next up. As I said, she sits in the box waiting for the go ahead. So far all I have done is open the box, check the contents and look through the instructions. I wont start her, or a log, until Mississippi is finished or at least up to the final rigging stage.
Cheers

Cool, you're doing Chaperon next? I'll look forward to that. My personal aesthetic eschews any bright colors even if authentic, so I personally would do the Chaperon's deck as a highly weathered red or a duller red-brown, or at least a naturally stained color. But that's just me. Get those railings done!

it is one of the things I really like about them I must say, and although I know this particular boat is only a somewhat fancy representation of a grand old lady, I do like all the trimmings she comes with. bit like decorating the tree at Christmas! having said that, I am itching to get stuck into the Chaperon which has been sitting patiently in her box since last Christmas. that is fortunate though, as whilst doing the Mississippi I have been ruminating over what color to do the deck on her??? still tossing up between a red one like Kurt's version. or a lighter stained one.
cheers

I would stick a covering on the 'clipped' roof in fact I would plank it then plank the other one as well. You will never know the difference.
