yep, in (old) Dutch that's the kolderstok...

Happens to be the brand name of the manufaturer of the kit.

Carl and Steve, you're right about possible shortcuts.
Call me stubborn, but since this is new to me I try to work as neat as possible.
I'm not yet ready for shortcuts.  When I get the hang of it I think I can speed this up.
One of the things I learned here is...don't rush. Besides, I need time to look at things I still have no clue about how to do it properly.

The positions of the gunports has been determined and the boxes have been glued in place. To add more strenght to the boxes and create a bigger lip for the surrounding planks some extra strips have been installed.
In order to determine the run of the wales and position of the gunports all the bulkheads come with laser marks for each wale. Basically a good idea, but due to my decision to close the hull with plywood not many of the marks are still visible. So I had to take the dimensions off the drawings and transfer it to the hull.
Before starting the installation of the wales I did plank the concave area above the transom with basswod strips 1x4 and sanded them to shape. After one coat of sanding sealer and intermediate sanding several coats of a acrylic paint (Ivory) were applied.
Finally I have prepared the transom wales from a walnut strip 1,5 x 5 and glued them into position.

Thank you for your Likes, construction continues!

After planking the stern and closing the gun ports with walnut strips the last remaining bulkheads got filled with plywood and sanded to create the largest possible surface to fix the single planking.
Unfortunately a few of the very fragile bulkhead stubs broke off during sanding the hull, but not major issue, will be a easy fix.
The lasercut parts for the keel are cleaned up and glued together along with a basswood strip to form the false keel. As the hull below the waterline will be painted the keel is made from basswood, the upper stem and stern parts are walnut.
While waiting on the glue to set I have constructed already the gunport boxes for the canon dummis from the lasercut parts.

Rigging is fun. Have a look at drawing 2 of the Duyfken - but be careful - it might be scary....

Busy week, so not much shipyard time until friday, but I couldn't resist to dry fit the oars on one side...

More end of the week...still must do the "rope ends thing". I'll be happy when I can do that this weekend.

The yard is fixed to the mast...

3 bloks involved. 1 on the yard and 2 on the mast.
    Like this...

With so many lines involved, I'm not sure when to secure a rope to the pinrail.
I'm afraid when I fix a line it might slack after I fixed the next...or next...or the one after that.
I guess there's a lot to adjust later on. I keep the glue away until I know what will happen.
And I have no clue what will happen.

    More soon...scary stuff this!

    Hey Robin,

Didn't have a look at your Bireme build until now. Looking good.  I made a Bireme as well for my son (ho studied archeology) and than started a scratch trireme in the same scale. This turned out to be a huge thing of about 1 meter length.
Picture of how far I am now:

All you readers might have noticed this build is not really updated every week (or so). This is because I am very busy on creating the third model in my range of Dutch 17th century ships. This time I am building quite a big one:  De Zeven Provinciën from 1665 - the flagship of Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter.

I hope to start a build log on this one within short time, but as the plan is to launch her as a model kit end of this year (short before Christmas) this might take some more time. I am very occupied in finishing the model and preparing the box and her contents.

Great to see a build log of the Batavia!

When I finish my current build I'll start with the (more humble) Duyfken from Kolderstok.

Thank you Scott, this glue is my favorite too.

Before the construction goes on a short look inside the Kits box.
The wood is of very good Quality troughout, the Accuracy of the Laser cut parts like Bulkheads, Keel, Stem and Stern parts is excellent. Walnut strips are included for the single Planking and Furniture. The figures and carvings are casted from resin and obviously also very well done.
The Assembling guide consists of 6 sheets of Drawings plus a photo-illustrated booklet.

Thank you for all the likes. This topic is a bit messed up due to the fact I am currently building three ships at the same time...

@Carl,  Size of the model: approx. 65 cm long (including sprit), 55 cm high, 25 cm width - which is actually a very reasonable size. Not to big to fill the whole mantelpiece, but also not to small to get lost in the corner.

@Steven, she is a pretty cute ship, indeed! I was very pleased by the shape and looks of it during my construction.

If I find some time I will start an after-build topic about the Duyfken.

My last post here was in januari, and now we're talking september.
Haven't done nothing in the meantime though.

In januari I started the scratch build Duyfken 1595 - finished it in July and made it into a model kit which is now available:

I think I should do something on the Trireme again...

    Thanks Martyn!
@Messis...yes I do, it's the trieres ram found in the Mediterranean Sea near Israel.

    The ladder..
A Greek bireme without a ladder is like a Swiss cow without a cow bell.

1x2mm basswood and thinned down cocktail sticks.

Ladder was used when the ship was beached.

Attached to the railing when sailing.

    Steering oars are next.

    Hammertime!

    Oh...that wasn't difficult.
I made cuts on the corners with the PE micro saw (mentioned before) and started to fold with a wooden popsicle stick (also mentioned before somewhere).
Finished the folding with my old X-Acto hammer with the round bit.

Finished the ram...ex bronze green patina, but I do that later. When I do it now the patina will wear off, because the ram is a safe place to hold, without doing any damage.

Keep in mind the ram is only 3 cm long.

What's next? The steering oars and the ladder.

    More soon,

    Robin
