Nice work :)

cobra1951 reacted to herbgold in HMS Pegasus by herbgold - Victory Models - Scale 1:64
I haven't fixed down the deck yet - if you read above you will see that I had already described the screws as a mistake.

I agree, those screws will tear the wood up, there is no pressure on the deck so only a small amount of downward force is needed to keep it in place until the glue sets

Nice and neat
I hate it when you get some epoxy squeezing out when you apply the clamps, the cleanup is so sticky

Sort of a reawakening for me over the weekend. I finally added another plank. :) One small step for a ship building padawan....
Been a bit of a mental block, so I sat down with the Admiral, a former Reg Nurse and worked it all out. I had to get past a few ideas about being "available" for "small" little jobs (GIs may recall what an sljo is) around the house. No more wasting time on the computer, that kind of stuff. I'm back.
Lawrence, thank you for your kind support. I hope to complete the planking without further ado and try my hand at rigging and adding some accouterments to the basics included in this kit. I haven't rigged a ship since high school, back in the late Renaissance. (Around the Beatles invading the USA).

Brian,
I have been copying portions of my plans and cutting out templates to use to make parts to replace the kit supplied plywood for my Niagara, and NEVER thought of checking to make sure that the scale was altered. Thanks for the heads up. I have also cut out sections of the actual plans and have found that I have to make sure that the images are in true 1/64 scale, as some are NOT.
Superb work on the cockpit deck!

cobra1951 reacted to EJ_L in Phantom by Elijah - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:96 - New York Pilot Boat
That is a tough call. I agree that the drawings do look like the decks are at the same level. I also agree though that I think it would look better and was probably lower down in side the cockpit. With a solid hull that might make for some carving out of the deck to make it work.
I would do some research on other build logs or even google images and see if you can find what others have done. Ultimately like Bob said, it's your ship and decision. Which ever way makes you happy.

Certainly looks like a strange set up whichever way you go. Bit of a dilemma. But as usual, your kit do it your way :)

Nice work on the anchors, and yes you are correct it is a capstan, basically an early winch

cobra1951 reacted to FifeModels in Sovereign of the Seas by Dominic - Deagostini - Approximate Scale 1:84 - 12 Month partwork
I tend to agree, and am highly put off with it being plastic.
I've a month or so before I need to worry about them yet anyway, so plenty of time for CMB to restock.
Thanks

Give them a ring to check because if they have been busy with orders they are a bit slow updating their site as it's not a live stock site which update themselves
Euromodels do the Amati 52mm ones too but it doesn't say if they are in stock or not
http://www.euromodels.co.uk/index.php?CATEGORY=20&SUB=2&THISPAGE=1&RADIOSORT=4&PICFILE=6766&STKNR=6766&STRH=2618&ORDN=4794&RNZ=357101
Personally i would wait rather than go down the plastic route also they are only 40mm wide

Hi Elijah.
Your Pantom is looking very good.
I'd like to point out something in Chuck's Practicum. On pg. 16 he talks about the cockpit. Chuck points out that the floor of the cockpit should be 1 foot below the adjacent deck. I've seen some Phantom's where the cockpit floor was lowered and they look alot better than those that didn't lower the cockpit floor. Look at Chuck's cockpit on pg. 17. The ship's wheel is up against the grating. By lowering the cockpit floor there will be a gap between the ship's wheel and grating.
Regards.

All those little things left to do can sometimes take up as much time as the main part of the build

cobra1951 got a reaction from ndeconte in Battle Station by cobra1951 - FINISHED - Panart - 1:23 - Also known as Posto Di Combattimento
Hi Don thanks Not far to go now. Still have some wooden bowls to make and hammocks that are suspended between the overhead beams and some Cannon tools and the cannon ball racks to fit to the decks then i can do the upper deck, but not too much to do on that as show in the box picture in post #1

Where possible i always blacken everything except the ships bell, as i think it looks more natural

Great looking boat! You can't declare it's done until it's actually done though, I proclaim this!
