cobra1951 reacted to EJ_L in Vasa by puckotred - DeAgostini - Scale 1:65
They could have kept a couple of wood carvers busy almost nonstop had that ship ever gotten into a fight repairing the damage to all those figures. I guess if you didn't have anyone skilled enough to re-carve them you would look even more terrifying chasing ships with an army of headless people strapped to the sides of your hull.
Excellent job on the painting. I don't know if the eyes are that important. Maybe try one or two and decide if the results are worth the risk and effort.

Yep it sure has a lot of ornamentation
Maybe they put them all there to make the enemy feel guilty about firing cannon balls at them

And very welcome you are, did you bring any pringles ?

Hi Ian
Having double checked you are indeed correct, my bad interpretation of the planking rule
Still my favorite one though

Thanks Ian
Count again though it's a 5 butt . I use 5 butt shifts because it doesn't make the deck look overloaded with joints

Thanks Don
It's 0.6mm x 5mm Lime wood but it has a good amount of grain in it
The bottom deck is the same wood but with no visible grain to it, as the bottom deck is not visible later on i though i would plank it with some Lime i had lying about and save the grainy kit supplied stuff for later in the build

Thanks for all the likes and comments guys
Fitted and planked the next three decks and fitted the bulwark patterns

Wow Don - what a cool idea for scuppers! That bulwark area adds a lot to the overall appearance.
So - I can blame someone else for 4 builds at one time?

cobra1951 reacted to Elijah in Phantom by Elijah - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:96 - New York Pilot Boat
Should deadeyes be painted black, or would they be left natural during the late 1860's?

Not sure if they were painted on purpose but given that a lot of deadeyes, blocks, etc. were in contact with tarred rope you can bet they were not squeaky clean.

I have to agree, we spend so much time looking at our builds we see every little fault. Anyone else looking just sees the overall effect of the planking. In my case it looks great and i would not have noticed anything if you had not mentioned it, as i just appreciate it for what it is (a great little model)

Bob,
Oh no, I am hardly the one to argue this , except to say that my Victory manual calls it the 4 butt shift system - I can only surmise, if they are correct, that there are 4 shifting planks before the 5th one is again in alignment. Anyway, this is the pattern that I used as well. I guess maybe we can get the popcorn out and watch this debate play out.
Best, Ian
