Just came to this post. Not to late I hope. I have used the Vallejo set and the Ak weathering set on buildings for my sons model railway. It needs a little practice. An airbrush is recommended. There is also a small book by Ak about wood weathering.

    Regards Götz

Thank you for the answer, i bought the book and the sets also the washes that they recommend in the book but the truth is i don't own an airbrush, i always use brushes, do u av any experience on those with brushes?

  2. Hey guys! i just wanted to let you guys know im still working on the blueprints, but its going a bit slow because im also working on my main job, by the way i wanted to ask you, what kind of wood would you use for this look? a dark one like walnut? or maybe something more light like holly and then stain it?

I've been thinking lots about  this project and i keep on finding questions, but i dont know if i should make them here? or maybe each question in a different post in the right category? i know im too noob lol but please be patient i will learn i promise! thank you so much for your interest in my post im trying to give my best

Looks like a good start.  There are not many who design the boat and then build it.

    Bob

Thank you Sr! I know its far from done but yesterday i felt very pleased when i looked at all of the frames, sure it was kinda hard but it was something i really really enjoyed doing, now i will put myself to work in the rest of the details like the water line and so much more but at least the core of the ship it's already there :P and im really happy about it

  4. Well guys here is a huge update, it's 4:07 in the morning in my country but i had to post it before going to bed, after i think a week maybe more maybe less, and lots of math, i finished drawing the kneel and frames, the drawings are far from finished as i need to "polish" the drawing way more, but thats easier, once i get it clean i'll make them way bigger, my point is this ship gets about 30" long, once im done with that ill work in the rest of the details from the ship to get a nice and big set of blue prints, sorry for the quality of my phone camera, please let me know what you think! thats really important for me.

I ran into a similar situation with a ship that I consider now as one of my best.  See the Mercury in my signature.  I wanted to do it using a plank on bulkhead method and it fell flat and looked awful.  I started completely over using a solid hull which I was more used to.

Not to say you should start over with a new method but sometimes taking the lesson you learned and going back to the beginning is a good step forward.  Even if it feels like a step back.

I look forward to seeing how your ship comes together.  Welcome back.

Well actually its kind of frustrating but im already working on it :P there are several issues ill be fixing and hopefully it will make it look more like an actual ship, but ill be keeping up the shape of hull! :D

One of the modifications i plan to make is changing the scale of everything on deck, i'll reduce the size of everything i can so the actual decks look bigger and we have more space for actual stuff that is not on the ship right now.

Some changes are a a must, so if someone was hoping for the exact same ship of the model by revell im sorry to disappoint you, i'll try to keep as much as i can of the original ship but there's stuff in this ship that is just irrational, for example i found out that the deck at the bow is higher than the banister.....

here is a picture i found online where you can spot this mistake

    maxresdefault (8).jpg

And this is just one of the several mistakes so wish me luck and let me know what you guys think, the feedback is always amazing to keep pushing the project, suggestions are welcome!

  6. Well guys i have news for you, good ones and bad ones, so ill give first the good ones, i've been working on the kneel and i have it pretty much finished, the bad ones is i found out everything inside the decks is wrong, like really really wrong, so i had 2 options keep on with the original ship just as it is, or modify everything on top of the deck to make it look more realistic and useful, tell me guys what would you have done in my situation?

  7. Hey guys! since im back and i have in mind at least 3 project that involve plastic kits i started looking for some tutorials on how to paint wood and so i came across some products and i wanted to know if you have stumbled across these or what do you think about them? thank you so much guys

I have just stumbled upon this log. This is something very new and different.  Your doing a great job.

I don't know about using balsa for the planking but, Prehaps some thin walnut strips? Something with not much grain showing.

Also I'm not sure how glue would adhear to the clay. Unless you use CA?I've honestly never attempted to do this. All the best and glad you returned.

Hey! thank you so much for your kind words, i opened a thread in other part of the forum and they also told me about walnut, maybe i will go that way. but im not sure i understand what you mean with the glue and the clay :/

  9. Hey guys, i literally just came back from a 3 year break and im kinda lost about where to start when talking about wood, the models I'm planning on making are for RC and i dont know what type of wood would be best for the kneel and ribs, also the planking? where do you guys get your supplies? i was thinking of balsa wood for the planking? let me know your thoughts guys it would be really helpful :D

  10. Hey guys, so its been almost 3 years since the last post but many things happened that made me put aside this project and in general the ships, but i learnt new stuff that im sure it will be really helpful, i opened my own studio where i sculpt and paint so i think it will be really helpful however i've forgotten lots of stuff, but well lets get to the point!

! have found a better way to make all of the blueprints! remember the sculptor clay? well it wasnt working at all, it used to get soft really quickly and since this kit is really tough to put in with all of the parts matching, i found a better way, i assembled the hull with the decks and then i drilled a whole in one of the decks in a place that later will be covered, once i did this i started sealing all of the gaps around the ship and i started melting some home made chavant clay, this clay can be as liquid as water when its warmed up but if you let it cool it gets really really hard even on room temperature, and after lots of work putting apart the ship once again i got the inner mold of the ship!! with this im planning on making the blue prints of the keel and the ribs!

Im really sorry for not taking pictures of the process but here is the picture of the demolded ship! (all the gaps will be filled) by the way do you recommend me using balsa wood strips for the planking? i would like to make my ships for RC even when i dont know much about the mechanism, thanks guys!

  11. Hi Kat,

I found a blog with some awesome photos that you need to see!  hotlink: http://davelandweb.com/chickenofthesea/

I have downloaded lots of photos of the Jolly Roger but these are the best I have found, lots of photos from the 50's

Thanks Alot Tarbrush, these are quite amazing! Actually i have found out there are 2 Jolly Rogers the one from the Revell (Lindberg) and the Restaurant, but also another Jolly a bit different it can be seen by the numer of cannons the position and the decks also the stern, but its so subtle i had to check out alot the peter pan movies from disney and some games to find out this, have you notice this?

  12. Kat, we have an admin on this site called Chuck Passaro, he does extensive work using Sculpy for ship decorations, He even posted a practicum of how he uses it on the NRG website www.thenrg.org under the ship modeling resources shop notes.

Take a look or drop Chuck a PM, I'm sure he'd be happy to offer some advice.

    Ben

Thanks Trussben! i didnt know lol, im really new to this forum, but ill give it a look :P

  13. Very impressive clay work!  That is a method I have not seen before.  I agree that balsa is to soft to carve.  I built one ship out of balsa and a lot of wood filler.  It turned out well but the process was tough and I vowed never to do it again.  Out of curiosity have you tried bass wood or cherry?

    Thanks Dsiemens!

Here in Mexico is very hard for me to get those types of clay i would need to import them :P

  14. Hmmmm ... I had never seen something similar and interesting

Keep on, I am so curious

BTW, I have a little question for you about Clay use, because I have no experience with it

    See pictures below

In first picture are shown ornaments on Cutty Sark stern, and I want to make this in most accurate way it is possible

    attachicon.gifpost-4738-0-90246100-1374654462_thumb.jpg

In next picture, you can see little space for applying ornaments in scale I am working ...

    attachicon.gifornaments.JPG

Is it possible to make this tiny embossed lines by Clay to get precise relief ornament ? ( Less than 0,5 mm)

If not, have you any idea ?

    With regards

    Nenad

Hi Nenad! Sorry for the late response but its for a good reason! :D i´ve spending several hours on research trying to figure out the way i would do it, mixing some techniques but i found out that almost everyone paint the stern instead of making it 3D as i think its your goal

Its such a shame there are no tutorials for doing this, since its really important sometimes, take me as an example one of my future projects (wont say the name of the ship) needs this alot!! :

    QAR_OST.PNG

    So i started making some tests and i found something it might be helpful :D ;

When i have time besides building ships i love sculpting, and i use something called Super Sculpey Firm, excellent clay really really strong after baked!

So i made a small sheet of clay using a rolling pin then i cut the sheet in half and i baked one half and after baked i glued a paper sheet with some random letters, then with the help of an exacto knife i cutted really slowly (lots of patience here ) then i putted the letters in water so the paper sheet would come out easy, then using some very fine sandpaper i made it softer

I didnt took any pictures since i dont know where the hell is my camera, but it should came out something like the separated letters but grey ( i dont use balsa wood for carving i think its kinda weak and you dont get to change the shape without carving  ) :

    syren3.JPG

The Second Test i made it using the other half ot the clay sheet putting the paper over the claysheet before baking it, but the result was horrible!!! :( the clay expanded when baked and the letters didnt came out in good shape, also it was really hard to cut the clay when it was soft, so i would say try the first option, with lots of patience im sure you can get a really nice result, this type of clay after baked is really easy to carve and its quite strong so i think its a nice option

    :D

What an interesting concept of using clay in this way.  It should work beautifully.  That’s really thinking “outside the box”, or is it “inside the hull”.  Oh, well.  Can’t wait to see the drawings happen.

    Bob

Lol Thanks Bob!! i try to always mix techniques! :D

  15. Hi Nenad! Its Really inspiring to read your posts! I took some pictures yesterday ill try to explain what im doing here :

    s2hes7.jpg2cfxumf.jpg9bi421.jpg24lrl3s.jpg2a5ygxl.jpg15of8r6.jpg29gml9g.jpg

I used Sculptor Clay to fill half of the hull so i can get the inside shape of the ship exactly by half,

it needs lots of work since i gotta be putting more clay in the spots its missing then i put it in back in the freezer so the clay gets hard as rock so i can take it out to keep working,

the ship is still in the works but its getting there, im sure i have already the Keel form and im being very carefull to have the righ shape and curves of the ship, when i get the final shape in clay ill make a cast of it and ill cut it in several "slices" so i can get the Frames, this way i will get also the shape of the deck :D

as you can see the clay matches almost perfectly the shape of the ship and decks ( in the last pic i placed the decks a little bit separated of the clay so you can see the shape ), it still needs lots of work but i hope its visible what im trying to do hehe :P

  16. Adventure building matches to adventure ship. And, I suppose, matches to adventure Captain ( modeler ) ?

I`ve just looked at some sequences of battle on deck ...

Do you capture some details of inside/outside of ship from video ? It can be very usefull

    lol exactly Nenad!

im not quite sure of which movie you are talking about.... Peter pan? right in this moment i´ve been looking for lots of pictures of the Restaurant in France, but i think it would be really helpful!

This certainly sounds like fun.  I will pull up a chair in the corner and watch with interest.  If you get a chance checkout a song from 1976 by Roger McGuinn called "the Jolly Roger".  It really sums up the pirate life for me.

Thanks Jack! i just listent to it and its quite good!

  17. The Jolly Roger has always been one of my favorites.  It was actually the first model ship I built myself as a teenager.  Mine was a Lindberg kit.  I still have it though it's in bad disrepair and needs restoration.  Another project on the list.  I look forward to seeing what you create.  Scratch building is tricky but is so much more fun in my opinion.  Nothing like creating something that is yours and one of a kind.

Its amazing how this kit has been arround for a while even with the fitting problem, and i think the reason is the ship is quite amazing and looks wonderfull finished, i share the same oppinion with you, scratch building is totally amazing!! its quite an adventure :P

What a wonderful project!!!   I have loved this ship since I was a child and had a jigsaw puzzle of it.

Looking forward to following your build log.

Im amazed of how many of you guys are interested in this proyect! this is really inspiring to keep working hard for it :P i wont disappoint you guys! :D
