mrjimmy got a reaction from flying_dutchman2 in Carving tools, books and carving woods discussion
If anyone needs some inspiration to do some practice in order to improve their carvings, by all means check out the website below. Alexander is a world class shipbuilder and a very accomplished carver. Most of the work shown is in the round, but worth a look.........enjoy.

Thank you, Alexander. I imagine several folk here (myself included) would be interested in his tools. And you are getting great results using them!

The author of these tools is the master from Moscow. It also builds model ships. And especially for this work makes to order these chisels. They are really professional, I can say for sure. I check for yourself! And this tool is certainly nowhere to be found, it was made specifically for our micro job. Each chisel can be negotiated separately, it does set it for what it is necessary to the customer. Some people are only a few pieces.
Some people need only selected types of chisels. Or you can make a different pen. They can be of different shapes and different materal, such as fine wood, with special privileges to different chisels can be easily distinguished from each other.
This miracle of the casket did not have it. This is done after the buyer has bought a similar set. He decided to make for the rest of his tools are the same handle and made such a package here.
This wizard makes it really upscale. Photos will not show it real, they need to touch hands, to understand exactly what it is!!! I know that this tool is bought not only modelers and carvers, and craftsmen are made dolls. Once I began to work the rest of these sets are now in the hands like a sleeper.
This wizard is no have separate site, he sells his instrument through a Russian Forum. I do not know what his plans are. I think I need to ask him for permission and if he will permit, I will be happy to give his address.

The context may have been in the message before.
Actually it sounds like I may be on the right track from your log.

Ms. Irish has a similar book about wood burning that haas a similar practice board for burning. She is a very good instructor, somewhat like our own Chuck. It's nice to have people with that kind of talent to steer us on the right path.

A word of caution about copying carving plans: 'don't always assume the drawing is correct'.
Earlier I mentioned the book(s) by Lora Irish and how I found the examples very helpful. However, in her book of plans she makes mistakes. For example, the leaves of a rose are 'opposite' on the stem, not 'alternate'. Likewise those leaves are not lobed but serrated or toothed and much broader than hers. I realized this much later after I had carved her design.
Another example is her plan for some rope, part of which is shown below. I wanted to use this for the border of a sign but noticed that the rope she shows reversed the lay on the other side of the knot. That's impossible.
Likewise the knot is strange and not at all the way I tie a simple knot. So, I made a model and will change the design shown below to correspond to the green rope. The reason I decided to do this is that I wanted to do some 3-D carving.
Sorry, I just realized that her knot is a figure eight knot. That is probably better looking after all, but the rope is still wrong.

Thank you guys.
The three projects thus far were fun and I learned a lot about carving and the tools involved.
For future designs that involve model ship decorations I now have a better feel for what it takes.
To be sure, what I have done so far is on a larger scale and I need to consider smaller tools in the future.
But is that not what modeling is all about?
We shrink the big things and try to duplicate them the best we can. Think big, work small.
I do have one more project but I won't get into the details here.
It involves making a display sign using wood and carved letters for my USS Constitution model.
I was hoping to do that using a piece of the real ship but (alas) I don't have one of those pieces that was promised to me in the past.
PS. Jim, the 'Rose of Sharon' is actually not a rose but a flower that is part of the hibiscus family. It just did not fit my design.

Every day I see new ideas and new ways of creative expression. This one leaves me in awe, the individual vignettes of the details and how they fit together are so useful for those who build in the solid from 2D plans.
This build could become a prominent book on the building of one of these ships A boon to modelbuilders and historians alike.
