Hi all,kit buyers anonymous,I am in,all this talk of 'stashes' has made me have a role call Current count at ten, with plans for probably another ten scratchbuilds .There used to be a kebab shop in Leeds that was the stuff of legends in these parts, sadly now gone like many good things from days gone by

Looking good! You're at (what I call) the 'Cinderella' stage of your build, where the personality of your build starts to come out. The fun part! I'm still deciding what I'll build next, I have six in the closet (including the 18thC longboat) and #7 is on it's way. Any more and I will have to start attending meetings for 'Model Ship Builders Anonymous.'
I agree with Nigel and Kester about the poly, use the stuff in the can! It's the exact same stuff. The stuff in the can will start to thicken after a couple of years, but at that price, it's cheaper to buy a new can and take the old one to the recycling center.
I like the species of walnut I'm using on this build sooooo much better. It's darker in color with a cast of gray and has a tight grain. On a prior build, that walnut species was reddish brown in color and the grain was open, causing the dreaded splintering (and it was a pain to work with.)
The last time I had a really good kebab was when I was in Manchester. There's a place just south of the Manchester velodrome and the shop was open late. YUM!

Thanks Hamilton for your continuing interest.
I have now built the stove, but will not mount it until sometime later in construction to avoid damage to this very delicate little piece. Since the stove is painted, I chose to use the basic kit pieces to assemble it. I did a number of the details with non-kit items. For example, I used very thin styrene to do the various doors, a couple of very small bulls eyes I had for the pulleys and some tiny (40 links per inch) chain to connect the pulleys. Doing this piece almost convinced me that my aging eyes and hands need to work in larger scales. Still very enjoyable, but getting very difficult.
Next, I will start to mount and rig the first few guns.

Hi Nigel,
thanks for your "likes" and for visiting the Gorch Fock 2 on my Yards slipway, and for your nice comments.
The GF 2 I am doing is very much orientated to the 1:150 scale Version of that legendary Plastic kit from Revell. It resembles the Version of the late 60`s. Unfortunately it is not produced any more since many years, and one must have great luck to get such kit e.g. per Ebay auction. I had luck, and so had very nice samples for the Rating dimensions, wich of course had to be magnified to scale 1:95, and the parts had to be scratch built.
Still the plastic model remained unbuilt, so the complete kit could be sold further on to another happy modeller

Hello dear friends and warmly thank you for all your comments and praise. Your words mean a lot for me and I am pleased very much.
Well, the crew is interested mainly in the bottles with delicious drinks inside the cabins. I have to watch them not to be drunk. Maybe during the nights, when I sleep, they have a party on board..... because sometimes some of them fall over during the model construction.
Best regards
Doris
The port is finished, all deadeyes are placed at the channels according to plans.

NMBROOK reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for the comments. Hmm... now I am pressured by all the confidence expressed.
B.E.
Frolich actually cuts the frames from a slab of wood. I just feel I know my limits at this point so I'll be doing the best I can at this point. I may try Chuck's method if this fails.
Sjors,
I'm building the small boats that go onto Licorne's deck. I'm still waiting on the wood for the framing. I'll be posting pictures even if this is a failure, although I feel pretty good about how it's going.
Thanks Nigel. Frolich, Bello and some of the others that I reference do beautiful work and I'm studying how they did it. I like the idea of the solid piece shaped and I can see having two as he shows.. one aft and one forward at the bow.
I have the mold lifts cut out and glued together so today will be spent shaping it. For the mold, I'm using basswood since the experts said to use a "soft piece of wood". After shaping, I'll coat it with a couple coats of diluted white glue, some wipe-on poly and then furniture polish. But gotta' get it shaped first.

Hi Nils
I thought I would pay a visit to see what you are up to.This took me down memory lane a little as I built the 1st Gorch Fock as a child from a plastic kit.Your work is fabulous,I particularly like the metal work,it is fantastic.A very impressive model of a very attractive and sleek ship.
Kind Regards
Nigel

Hi Mark
Having recently acquired Frolich's book myself,I followed his leed by using a small solid block in the construction of Caroline's launch. It sits forward of the transom in the base of the hull. This helped a great deal to overcome the double curvature of the frames just forward of the rudder and is covered up when the interior is fitted out.
Regarding joint lines,Dr Mike discarded black paper in his DVD,stating that all black paper was of too good a quality for glue penetration,he used the cheapest quality white paper available and dyed it with black ink.Messing about, yes, but it does make a lot of sense.
Kind Regards

Ahhh now I'm with you.. have some ordered already would you believe, didn't know what they were called mind you! (coming from the States together with one of Chucks C18th Longboats, they were both going for half nuttin so couldn't say no.. € 35 to the door!)
I'll probably find I too have an allergy to Walnut Planking but for a different reason to you bud.. perhaps I'll continue down with the present stuff after-all, though it would be a shame to waste the Walnut ! Oh Well.
All The Best Nigel
