I do wonder how much of the $2,200 the craftsmen actually get. A fraction I am sure.

Has anyone ever worked out what the labour cost of building a decent Victory if you had to live off the income. Something tells me it would be way more than $2,000

I don't have my protractor with me, but it looks like it's about 25 degrees. If you have a protractor, you can measure it off the screen. This was taken from AOTS: Victory.

Just fabulous mate!I would much rather look at your build than the 1/10 model. They can't have been the most comfortable of toilets with the pinrail in your back.

Wonderful job with the gilding Frank   This is really exceptional work as it is so easy to loose the detail on these small castings with this process.

Yeah its a nice documentary and I think its nice that it covers the everyday men and not the king. Some of the footage was made by the father of the film director.

    Hi Matti
Thanks for the documentary heads up.I have seen both now, both excellent despite not speaking Swedish. There was a great deal of original footage in the second, reminds me of watching the Mary Rose raising live as a school boy

VERY nice scrolls Theo   I am glad the drawings were helpful in more ways than one.I don't think these drawings are the original, they have been drawn by a Spanish modeler using various sources of reference. As far as I know,no drawings exist after she was substantially altered.

Cheers mate! Yeah comfort seems to have been of low priority, at least for the common crew. Vasa wonderfully reflects 1600 society in that way.

It must have been awkward to go to the loo when the ship layed in harbor...

Hey everyone, here is an update on the beakhead.

First some reference pics I took at the museum:

And here is where Im at. The thingie is finished and the heads also. The planks above them are only dryfitted. I will wait with gluing them until after the steps are in place:

No way Brian - I've used Copper Hammertone paint below the waterline to simulate the plating. There is a limit to how far I'm going as regards authenticity and even usual model ship building practice. The Hammertone hides some of the imperfections   .

I'm doing this project at my holiday van at Tuncurry - no power tools apart from a Dremel, and any extra bits and pieces I didn't bring with me I have to purchase from either Bunnings or the local Hobby Shop which both have a very limited range of suitable products.

According to the Del Prado instructions Navy Blue was used instead of Black - go figure. Old Mate probably used the closest colour he could find, and got considerably confused into the bargain.

Nigel - do what you will   .

..Did some brainstorming about how to manufacture these "artifacts"..
Sorry for the following (long) text but my findings in this case are not so easy to explain in a few words

The First problem I had to solve was “consistency”
From my earlier carvings (2 curls for the stem) I found out that it was not so easy to produce equal results.
So I knew that drawing the motive by hand was not really an option.

    Cracking problem 1:
I decided to use a so-called “CAD program” and “designed” the curl I needed ("not to complex" as I know my carving skills  )
So after printing the result (on a laser printer) I had to transfer the motive “somehow” to wood.
I tried soaking the paper in all kind of chemicals and hoped that it “magically” would/could transfer the motive to wood.
    .. without luck..

..Maybe the results are different/better when using an inkjet printer..
An laser printer  uses “heat” and burns “powder” very secure to the paper.
So again “after a bit of brainstorming” I used an iron and hoped that by reheating the paper it would “transfer” the motive.
    .. without luck..

To keep the scenario short and share my findings:
I ended up in printing the curls on a “transparent” foil (used for overhead projectors) and when reheating the foil (using an iron) it will actually “release” the powder particles to wood !!

    "Cracked" problem 1 ..i believe..

So...Next challenge was the carving itself
I think it is easier to show the progress with a few pictures

Using a fretsaw ? to cut-out roughly the contours

And the result after using a sharp scalpel (blade 10)

“Polishing” the result with a thin strip of sandpaper (1500)

“More or less” 4 equal results..

And installed/waxed them on starboard today.
    .. enjoy..

Sparrow: Jan, I am very glad to serve as a source of inspiration .  Some years ago I was in the same situation, but after busy years in business I have now a lot of time on ship modeling .
The inside of the boat is completely ready, the rudder remains to be completed and then anchor and oars.

Here is an update.  The bridge is now complete, just need to paint, fit and rig the fore mast.  There is 20-30 pieces of PE in the fore mast.

More progress.  I bought an oerlikon PE kit, but the gun body was so delicate, that I could not bend it without breaking it, so I used the bases of the pe kit and use the plastic gun body.  BTW to show the size of the oerlikon guns, I have put it on a 5p piece.

The last picture shows the first bit of superstructure and the rigging of the booms.  I am using E-Z thread for all the rigging.

This is my progress so far on Academy's HMS Warspite special edition.  It comes with extra PE and gun barrels. I also bought extra PE oelikons and pomp pomp guns.  he oelikon body proved too delicate for me, so I used the shields and bases and the plastic gun from the kit.
