NMBROOK got a reaction from Script in Ratlines....why so important.....
I get completely what you are saying Jim.You choose ships to build without lots of rigging and ratlines,it is the original subject that dictates this.I myself prefer to work with wood rather than thread.I don't think this detracts from the skill involved to build a model, you only need to look at some of the Navy Board style models in the scratchbuild section. If it is your hobby then surely do what you most enjoy.Personally I would rather spend hours carving ornaments than tying knots.I think many of my future builds will be stubmasted, compounded by the fact I do not have a full size museum at home to display all the ships on my build list. One fully rigged first rate takes up more space than three admiralty style ones.

NMBROOK reacted to augie in Ratlines....why so important.....
And just to clarify my position.... there is nothing less 'magic' about a boat or ship designed without ratlines. I greatly appreciate canoes, whaleboats, tugboats , submarines and heavy metal battleships. We are, after all, modelers.

NMBROOK reacted to NAZGÛL in Wasan 1628 by Nazgul - FINISHED - Billing Boats Vasa 1:75
Glad if I could help. CA glue and baking soda is great for some work.
Here is a pic of a herm that could be interesting for someone into sculptures like Vasas. This is from a church in Västerås (wich has a lot of things from early history so I try to visit when I can). Its made in the early 1600s in Lübeck and the paint is original according to the staff.
To the left is one from Vasa, to the right the one from the church.

Looking good, and brings back memories of my younger years when building this model.
If I may, I would like to give a little tip..
If you can, look carefully at the Payne engraving and Van De Velde sketches. Try to follow the main wales using those as reference for these and the upper wales. Allow the second planking to follow the upward curve of the wales, and this is how the bulwark tops should be shaped - it should be a nice soft curve, not stepped with slightly different angles of the curves as the kit depicts - or at least, when I built it 20 years ago (where do the years go - the older I get, the faster the years pass..)

NMBROOK reacted to Ferit in Frigate Berlin by Ferit KUTLU - Corel - 1/40 - 1674
Hej Theo,
Even if WVH is my chilhood love, I couldn't betray my pretty Berlin... I should do everything I can do with her... There would be nothing for each other to think after us... She has to be finished first... Otherwise she would be left somewhere at the first corner...

NMBROOK reacted to Ferit in Frigate Berlin by Ferit KUTLU - Corel - 1/40 - 1674
Hej Theo,
Thank you for your interest...
After reading your info I checked also these dimensions and ratios... You are quite right, the scale of WVH is app. 1:36... and it's not that dramatically far off... And I could believe now with a good few kits, the scale one way or another is not completely exact...
Now that's done... I am happy with the result about ratio...
I wouldn't calculate the scales no more...
I must just do it, build her!...

NMBROOK reacted to Blue Ensign in Stern of the HMS Victory
What an amazing insight you must have to presume knowledge of what we "OTHERS" have regarding understanding or otherwise the differences between 18th century shipbuilding practice and the offerings provided by kit manufacturers.
I think you will find that many of us fully appreciate the shortcomings in kit design, and not just relating to Victory.

@ Nigel,
You have caught a good point my friend...
I had referred also Model Mariner, a member who had been building Berlin in scratch, following the plans of course... He had told me that my Berlin's scale seems 1:40... He had checked like ChrisLBren, the original dimensions against the model's. Then the scale approximately is 1:40...
@ Keith,
Hi Keith, I had shocked by their answer... You are right, with a scale of 1:40, WVH would be huge...
@ Mark,
Hi Mark,
That was one of those days that I was angry with myself, that I was telling to mysellf to stay away from perfectionism... I had thought aloud, sorry to make all of you pay attention... That has happened above its purpose...
About the scale problem, after all those comments I decided that in fact, the essential has to be the consistency of the scale between all parts of a model. The scale in one way or another, 1:40 or 1:50, has to not matter. The importance is that for example while the scale of a cannon is 1:40, the figurhead also must have the same scale... In addition to what you said, maybe they want to use some common parts in some kits of different ships... It's another reason of not being a perfectionist... It makes me happy if I know the errors previously rather than I meet them afterwards...
Thank you again for your interest...
@ Hamilton,
Hi Hamilton,
Thank you for your thought my friend...
That had happened above its purpose... I had thought aloud... Sorry...
There are a lot of things to do on my Berlin... I had not bought WVH, as I had been and am a beginner, the price had been determinative...
You are right, Corel's parts are good in quality... WVH is their flag ship... And she is a beautiful lady and like my childhood love...

Hi Ferit
With this debate on scale and the fact of Corel's complacency towards it,are you certain Berlin is 1/40?Just a thought
