Glad if I could help. CA glue and baking soda is great for some work.

Here is a pic of a herm that could be interesting for someone into sculptures like Vasas. This is from a church in Västerås (wich has a lot of things from early history so I try to visit when I can). Its made in the early 1600s in Lübeck and the paint is original according to the staff.

To the left is one from Vasa, to the right the one from the church.

Looking good, and brings back memories of my younger years when building this model.

If I may, I would like to give a little tip..

If you can, look carefully at the Payne engraving and Van De Velde sketches. Try to follow the main wales using those as reference for these and the upper wales. Allow the second planking to follow the upward curve of the wales, and this is how the bulwark tops should be shaped - it should be a nice soft curve, not stepped with slightly different angles of the curves as the kit depicts - or at least, when I built it 20 years ago (where do the years go - the older I get, the faster the years pass..)

    Hej Theo,
Even if WVH is my chilhood love, I couldn't betray my pretty Berlin... I should do everything I can do with her... There would be nothing for each other to think after us...  She has to be finished first... Otherwise she would be left somewhere at the first corner...

    Hej Theo,
    Thank you for your interest...
After reading your info I checked also these dimensions and ratios... You are quite right, the scale of WVH is app. 1:36... and it's not that dramatically far off... And I could believe now with a good few kits, the scale one way or another is not completely exact...
Now that's done... I am happy with the result about ratio...
I wouldn't calculate the scales no more...
I must just do it, build her!...

What an amazing insight you must have to presume  knowledge of what we "OTHERS" have regarding understanding or otherwise the differences between 18th century shipbuilding practice and the offerings provided by kit manufacturers.

I think you will find that many of us fully appreciate the shortcomings in kit design, and not just relating to Victory.

    @ Nigel,

You have caught a good point my friend...
I had referred also Model Mariner, a member who had been building Berlin in scratch, following the plans of course... He had told me that my Berlin's scale seems 1:40... He had checked like ChrisLBren, the original dimensions against the model's. Then the scale approximately is 1:40...

    @ Keith,

Hi Keith, I had shocked by their answer...  You are right, with a scale of 1:40, WVH would be huge...

    @ Mark,

    Hi Mark,
That was one of those days that I was angry with myself, that I was telling to mysellf to stay away from perfectionism... I had thought aloud, sorry to make all of you pay attention... That has happened above its purpose...
About the scale problem, after all those comments I decided that in fact, the essential has to be the consistency of the scale between all parts of a model. The scale in one way or another, 1:40 or 1:50, has to not matter. The importance is that for example while the scale of a cannon is 1:40, the figurhead also must have the same scale... In addition to what you said, maybe they want to use some common parts in some kits of different ships... It's another reason of not being a perfectionist... It makes me happy if I know the errors previously rather than I meet them afterwards...
Thank you again for your interest...

    @ Hamilton,

    Hi Hamilton,
Thank you for your thought my friend...
That had happened above its purpose... I had thought aloud... Sorry...
There are a lot of things to do on my Berlin... I had not bought WVH, as I had been and am a beginner, the price had been determinative...
You are right, Corel's parts are good in quality... WVH is their flag ship... And she is a beautiful lady and like my childhood love...

    Hi Ferit
With this debate on scale and the fact of Corel's complacency towards it,are you certain Berlin is 1/40?Just a thought

Hi JP as a bit of inspiration, here's a couple of examples of Victory models depicting her in pre great repair days.

Firstly the stern of Victory in a model  by Wyllie in the Portsmouth Naval Museum.

Secondly, detail from a conversion of the Heller Victory by an excellent modeller, Michael D whose log is on my home forum.

But remember it's not just the stern gallery that differed on the pre 1803 Victory, the Figurehead was also significantly more ornate.

Michael modelled the Figure detail in Fimo from the details of the model figurehead also in the Naval Museum Portsmouth.

    Food for thought eh?

    Cheers,

Good point Nigel, I was just wondering the same thing.

I wonder if the Berlin is also a 1:50, which is a common Corel size and a better metric ratio.

    Hi Matti,
I think it's great that your son is keen on what you are doing. It was my Father that got me into modelbuilding many years ago.Your sculptures seem to be coming on nicely,I agree though, you are right to take your time. Some jobs come together quite quickly, but others are done better when you slow down and take your time.

    Hi Ferit
I think I have started quite a discussion here .You have created a very beautiful model and have demonstrated a great amount of skill. It would be a great shame that your skill is not utilised further.I understand your frustration regarding the scale of WVH.At 1/40 though it would be a huge model.
The model building aside,I think you have a lot of friends on MSW and we will miss you

    Hi Nigel,
So gentle you are... Thank you for your thoughts, they are so kind...
I have not any judgement for leaving MSW... There are fantastic friends and members in a fantastic world... Now I realize after your post that I had expressed myself too dramatically and those were just momentary thoughts I had shared...
    And thank you again...
I am happy of building a model ship, of being here and nailed to MSW...
