Hi everyone - been working on the stern. The stern fascia is in 2 pieces which are glued together after adding a spacer & some PE windows. One thing that was puzzling me was the instructions said to paint the window frames black along with the outside frames, while the enclosed photos of the finished ship has the frames painted gold. I decided to just paint the windows & frames white. The decorations on the inner fascia were added also.  Hard to tell from my picture, but there is a space of about 10mm between the 2 pieces at the deck level. I don`t know why,but the windows look uneven in the last picture - may have something to do with the zoom on my cheapo camera. In the third picture you can see that they are in reality nice & even.

    federico,
Canons with emblems can be bought from most ship model supply companies. They come in several sizes as well.
     1) paint black (air brush allows for a super smooth flat cover)
     2) Using a flat blade to scape off the paint from the emblem
     3) add a clear coat after just to the emblem – helps to keep the brass brighter.
     Here is a link to the store from which I bought these canons;

PS: All members here at MSW are super helpful – any questions will always be answered.

These canons do not have the correct emblem for the last ship I built (that's for sure)
and not for this one that I am building now. Almost nobody will ever know the difference -
    well some here would haha
In any case it does make for nice added details. Hope this helps.

    federicoaa,

Nice detail. Glad that you could make use of this detail. A detail that I also borrowed from an other build log.

Regarding the canons, yes they will be air-brushed black. I will not use the kit supplied issues instead using the same ones
that I used in my previous Vasa build. I will also hand make the carriages. The kit provided metal one piece bits - I prefer to
    make these up.

here are a few shots of how they should look once done - from the Vasa. Thanks for dropping by much appreciated.

    Patrick,

If you are asking about artificial sealers that are typically used to protect wood, I have never used any.
My Vasa is also entirely unprotected in that regard. Subjectively speaking I don't care for the look of woods after sealers have been added.
I do know that they should, in fact, be used.

For me, the exception would be using an oil such as Wacto. That I did apply on my old Santa Maria - still looks the same after all these years.
I had thought of that for the Vasa's hull but decided not to.

Here are a couple of recent photos of the SM.

This is going to be the last update on the SR as she is now complete.
This has been a pleasure to build and I really like the way she has turned out. All the sails have now been finished and I am pleased with the result as this is the first time I have tried furled sails and it shows the deck of well . The crew have been placed on the decks and rope coils on the belay pins and knightsheads.
Thanks again for the brilliant comments and the likes. See you next time with my next build .

    Hi Mates,

Patrick: thanks so kind - especially from such a perfectionist such as yourself  . Yes, it was time for a new profile photo.

Minor lateral update. Re-did the hold ballast rocks. Don't know what I was thinking before. These may be a bit too big as well, but certainly
more to scale. Satisfied with this bit.
Now waiting for the lights and will start the next floor. I intend on using pear wood that I received from
Cornwall Model Boats (PS: great vender) as many of you already know. Here are a couple of updated shots.
    Cheers,

Michael there is a useful guide to Leds on this website, this is where I get my LEDS and various other items for my RC builds.

P.S. make sure you follow the guide to voltage, required voltage varies with the colour of the LED,too low it won't work, too high it will blow. This is why you quite often have to incorporate resistors in the circuit.

Excellent work Michael. Two suggestions re lanterns. One is to cast them with the LED inside using clear casting resin.Other option would be to buy larger LEDS and file to shape. The body is clear epoxy I believe so should shape and polish with files and wet and dry abrasive.
    Kind Regards

Hi all,    today I got round to finishing of fitting the ladder on the poop deck, after fitting and gluing,   a liitle bit of  light sanding was done  then I  applied a coat of top coat.

Siincere thanks to all those who view/like and  comment on my build.

Here's a couple of current build pics.

As promissed here are the photos from the front bulkhead ladder (I decided to paint it red ocre to match the bulkhead)  and also the knightheads  that have received a coat of black paint.

More progress with the steps today,  as the weather has changed again  so some bench time was calling me,   I finnished  the steps by cutting the length to suit the deck height, then after a bit of sanding to get a tight but accurate fit, I applied a small amount of pva and set them in place, after a few hours I finnished with a coat of flat top coat to seal them in.

    Just the one photo -

More progress today (I dont know whats a matter with me - Two days on the trot)     anyway  I finnished the first set of stairs  (my first attempt ever) , then I cut and fitted the boards to cover the hatch near the capstan.

Good day folks,   I found a bit of mojo so I decided to attack the boat yard,   I decided to work on the hatch that needs covering next to the capstan first,  my idea is to put two supports a mil (mm)  ot two below the hatch frame, then when these two supports are set I will lay some boards across the supports.
While this was setting I decided to do another temporary cover in the shape of a gratting, this will cover the second hatchway from the bow,   the idea here is during action the gun deck will need as much free space as possible, so the captain would order as many hatchways to be covered as possible, but to still keep some light and air getting to the lower deck, a gratting was used aswell as boards.
So I constructed a gratting and sanded it to fit, then droped this into place in the forward (second from bow) hatchway.

I also started work on one of the stair cases (very fiddly delicate work)

Here are a few pics folks.

Oh also  sincere thanks to all who take the time to view my work, comment  and hit the like button.

Hello everyone,  so I was able to get the phone camera and took a couple of shots of the work to the forward section  that I was working on, I have also added a small narrow strip along the inside rounded edge of the forecastle deck, this was annoying as the strip was so thin and brittle,  it broke even after heat bending,   anyway I managed to shape the two halves and glued them in place secured by a couple of pegs.

    Heres the pics.

Hello all,   I decided to have a bash at the forward gun port lids,  these were made up from  thin planking - I joined two lengths together that when joined they were the correct width of the gun ports,    when glued I cut them to the correct length.
After a little sanding to get a snug fit I placed them and glued them from the inside, after applying some heat to speed up securing I fashioned some hinges from very very thin strips of off cuts,  next I applied a few coats of dull black and red ocre edges and inside.
I also finished working on an inside frame for the poop deck stairs.

    Here are a few pictures.
