crawling along with all this planking of decks and cabin structures! finally have second deck glued down, but requires another coat of matt clear I reckon. second deck cabin structure is a slow process to plank. here it is just dry sitting on top of the deck itself. when completed and ready to mount, it will also be white, so any small gaps the camera shows up can be filled if necessary.

none of my passengers and crew have been glued into position as yet, and I am still procrastinating over the horse bay area detail. anyway, sorry, not much of an update, but it is a way to bump my log up from page 5 I guess

Finished and added blocks to the main yard.

Because I need my workbench to make the yards, I have moved the ship across the room.  I also need somewhere to store the yards as I build them -- so I will mount them on the masts as I go along.  Pic of the first mounted yard is shown, along with some rigging detail.

The light is not very good in the part of the workroom where the ship now is, so I bought a LED headset light (shown).  Wow, what a godsend.  Puts a ton of light just where you are looking.  Only $30 at Amazon.  Wish I'd had it sooner.

Built my first yard -- the lower main yard -- and thought I'd offer a few comments:

    1)  The plans show banding on the yards, but there is no indication there or in the manual what they are made of, so I used black thread.

    2)  For the life of me, I can't figure out the mast rings supplied with the kit.  The inner diameters seem wrong, and the counts seem wrong.  So I have abandoned them and made my own for the stunsail booms out of wire.  It's all painted black at the end so it looks fine.

The finished yard (rigging blocks not yet installed) is shown below as well.

    David

Finished the standing rigging on the jib.  Now all of the standing rigging is done.

I haven't built any of the yards yet, so now it's on to shaping and sanding.

A couple of "not in the plans" mods:

When I made the main topgallant mast, I messed up and created an area of the mast that was too narrow, and too weak.  As I got into rigging the backstays, I saw that it might not hold the tension.  So I added a small splint, which is virtually invisible at normal viewing distance, and that has strengthened the mast back to where it can handle rigging tension. I also added a backstay that isn't in the plans, running left to right from the top of the main mast down to the mizzen.  The backstays that are in the plans run at too steep an angle to pull the topgallant mast back to straight, which is what was needed. Regards,
    David

Here is most of the forestay rigging done.

Last picture shows some lines I've temporarily rigged through the boomkins and up to the jib, to try to keep me from pranging anything else.

Well, it was bound to happen to me sooner or later -- a bad prang.

In this case, I was wearing a sweater while working around the bowsprit from the front.  The tip of the bowsprit caught on my sweater without me knowing it, I moved, and SNAP.

I thought it would need a really stiff nail for repair, so I used a picture hanging nail, which is shown below.  I THOUGHT I had it completely aligned when I dry-fitted the repair, but at the end of gluing it somehow had developed a slight downward cant -- which I'm going to have to live with since I'm not about to try to take it apart -- I really glued it on solidly.

I can think of worse disasters -- like dropping the whole model -- and all in all, this repaired fairly well given the total snapoff.

It took the jackstaff with it, and I'll probably add that back at the end of the build.

But there is that slight downward angle . . .     Oh well.

    Regards,
    David

UPDATE:  I was able to bend the sprit up some, and to a point where I can use the stays to finish the realignment.  Final picture shows what it will look like when the stays are installed.  I'm only putting a slight upward pressure on with my hand.

    WHEW!

I've begun work on the forestays.  Mizzen stays done; first main mast forestay installed.  Closeup picture below of the heart blocks and lashings used to secure the main forestay.

vossy got a reaction from thibaultron in Age of youngest crew members?
Whilst watching a very old film set on an old ship there was a character played by a young boy who looked about 6 years old. He was a cabin boy in the film and told one of the passengers that he was 12.
My question is: How old were the the youngest legal members of ships in the 17th/18th century etc?

I'm sure that some put their age up to escape poverty and seek adventure, but what would have been the legal age to go to sea on vessels?

    Thanks.

    Chris.

Bowsprit now permanently mounted and gammoning completed.  The gammoning on this model is more than decorative -- it performs the same function as it would have done on the real ship:  locking down the bowsprit tight.

Gammoning was tricky to thread behind the beak struts.

Finished the foremast topmast shrouds and ratlines, and THAT'S IT for ratlines on this model!😃

I looked back to when I started the shrouds, and removing the 6 weeks I was away on vacation, I was dong shrouds and ratlines for 4 1/2 months.  That's as long as some other models I've built took overall.  Not sure what it is about this model that makes things go so slow -- maybe the size?

Well my friends  I am dropping  the anchors on the Mayflower.  I have received  some books  that showed me what I was looking for about rigging.   Serving,  seizing,  puddening, oh my. I have never heard of puddening,  please someone tell me the Mayflower  did not have this lol. I know it up to me how far to take the details of my rigging.  I ordered  a Serving machine as  ,  I had a hard time making my own.  The machine is in Canada, tracking it now, be here on the 12th.  So now I got to do some research  lol, look for better pictures lol.
I can not tell you all how much fun I am having here on MSW. Light switches  are coming  on all over the place, and I feel I am not running around like a chicken with its head   cut off.  I am just not sure of how far to take my rigging. So I am putting it on the shelf . Not for long though.  Just doing research  lol
This will give me time to look at The NRG data base and  the one here at MSW, all the information you need to build a Model thanks so much So I will  see you all later  , but don't be surprised if I start another build log, to keep my mined off of rigging  lol

Hey Bill, well you could argue authenticity about a lot of models. My favourite vessel of all time is Santa Maria. Has been for 50 odd years since I was a kid.
But, there is no definitive pictorial evidence of what she ever really looked like. Same for Columbus for that matter.
Apart from maybe, Victory and a few other super well known and documented vessels, you will find different model companies produce differing designs of
    the same vessel. Bounty etc.
I just think that the San Bartolme from Pavel Niktin looks outrageously good. Is is accurate? Maybe not, but was the Mona Lisa?
    I still want it!

They look fantastic! I so want the San Bartolme. But be aware that postage (not his fault), may be extremely expensive. I know it is here to Australia.
From the super excellent unboxing of the San Bartolme on here the packaging and overall kit looks just so outstanding. I am currently following a
build of it on FB and so far all is going to plan. I obviously can't recommend them personally as I have never built one, but from what I have seen
online they get my vote for sure.

The shrouds and deadeyes  are done on the starboard side,  now on to the portside.  I will do the portside , then on to the Ratlines, my favorite  part lol. Then the upper  shrouds and rat lines. This will take awhile and my outside world is hampering  my progress  😌.  So it might be awhile before I get to post again lol,  ok see you guys around. Thanks for everyone's help and time.  I know my ships are not historical correct  and I should do research  on some stuff but my abilities to do that are lacking,  but once I see how it is done or attempting to do  then I understand.  I have only been modeling for about two years, and have learnt to  do so  much. And there  is a mountain of stuff to still learn. So a big thanks to everyone  who help me along the way, and apologies  for my typos and posting in the wrong place at times, I will get the hang of it lol
Ok going to put into practice some of the stuff I learnt  Sea you sooner or later  lol
