IgorSky reacted to Piet in Majellan by Omega1234 - FINISHED - 1/200 - Luxury 37 m Motor Yacht - Miniature
That's beginning to look very nice Patrick. re Ben's comments - that's why I don't like composite structural elements in aircraft. Even secondary structures I have my misgivings on because when they fail it'll effect the primaries.
In any case, we don't have to worry about all that stress - load - stuff in models
Cheers,

Hi Ben
Many thanks for the information you've provided above. Not only is it very clearly explained, but it's also instructive and informative; particularly because, as a layman, I really have little understanding of the different construction techniques that one would use and why they're used. After reading your comments, I went back to the original description of the full sized boat to see what type of hull material was used. Apparently, the original boat does indeed have a GRP hull, (not Aluminium as I originally thought), so I guess that explains the hull shape.
As a general comment, I'd also like to say that your expertise is invaluable...it's not everyday that I can get advice from a professional naval architect and I'm pretty stoked about that!
So, once again, thanks!
All the best
Patrick

Hey Patrick!
LOVE the impression of the frames and side structure! Looking really great - I think you've really captured the essence.
It actually looked like what you'd see in a fiberglass hull - I know you mentioned to me the hull is supposed to be aluminium, so please don't take that as a criticism, just an interesting observation. It probably is a result of the scaling. Generally, fiberglass structures are shaped/sized differently, since all the structural rules change when you get away from metal construction. Metals yield and deform permanently before failing mechanically (yield stress vs ultimate tensile stress). But composites and plastics just kind of.........BOOOM and then are irreversibly broken. So they generally have to have larger cross sections for the frames and stiffeners, so there is more load carrying capability (stress is force/area - larger area equals larger load carrying capability, to put it simply). Meaning that fiberglass stiffening is generally lower and wider - almost c-channel shaped - to preserve interior volume without adding too much weight. And that is kind of what your stiffening looks like.
The point being that whether you intended the boat to be aluminum or fiberglass (both very common materials for boats this size), you've nailed the structure. Well, not really, since it's not wood. ( ) But you get the point.

Hi Nils
Many thanks for your comments about the paint.
You're right about the black paint being unusual, however, the real ship's hull is black, hence why I went for this colour. Personally, I reckon she'd look better in a more traditional white coloured hull, but at least this way, she'll certainly stand out from the crowd!
All the best

Hi Patrick,
the black paint is a bit unusual for a large yacht, but I trust it will look great when the other complement colors are on as well. The blue-greyish prime coat you had on the hull before always reminded me of the Color of the huge "Maersk line" Container carriers.
Looking foreward to more of your "Marjellan"

IgorSky reacted to captainbob in USCG Pequot (WARC-58) by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:96
Hello MSW,
It took quite a while but I finally decided on the boat to build. I have a too long list and will probably not come close to building them all. As I have said before I live in a small house without room to to display large boats. The options are build small boats or build in small scale. This time I chose small scale at 1:200 and cross my fingers that I do it justice.
The US Coast Guard Pequot (WARC-58).
During WWII this cable ship laid top secret Indicator Loop cables to protect harbors from German U-boats. Her mission ranged from the ports of Virginia up to Argentia, Newfoundland.
The Pequot was built in 1909 by the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden, New Jersey with the name General Samuel M. Mills and first commissioned as an Army mine layer. As a twin screw ship she was able to conduct the critical maneuvering required for precise cable laying operations. The Pequot had a length of 166' and a beam of 32'. With a draft of 13' she displaced 1106 tons. During wartime the crew consisted of 6 officers and 63 enlisted men. The ship was armed with two 20mm automatic fire cannons. On top of the rear cabin her signal letters and radio call sign, NRFQ, was painted so aircraft could raise the ship on the radio. The Pequot's official visual call sign as designated by the Chief of Naval Operations was W58.
Pequot was named after an Indian tribe resident in Southern Connecticut, members of the Algonquian language grouping.
From the information and pictures I‘ve been able to able to find the Pequot and her sisters were of riveted steel for the hull and maim deck housing. Above that she was wood. So it look like I’ll be re-studying the build style of MSW member Nils (Mirabell61).

Thank you, Patrick
Michael, I am looking forward to the planking as well, It is my favorite part of the build. I will concentrate this week on getting the Keel made up and the Garboard installed. ( and get a few pics on here before I get carried away with planking )
Thank you, Bob, I am a huge admirer of the Herreshoff Designs, this is the 3rd time that I have built the Buzzards Bay 14. ( this Boat is an absolute pleasure to build ) I have been considering building the BlueJacket 12 1/2 ( I did a scratch build proto type of the 12 1/2 ) How is the BlueJacket kit ? I have also considered building Joel white's version of the 12 1/2 .
Best Regards,
Pete

Hi Pete,
Your avatar of a Herreshoff 12 1/2 caught my eye. I'm a big fan of Herreshoff boats. In the nineties I built a full size Joel White Haven 12 1/2, which is a centerboard version of the original (Buzzards Bay Boys Boat). I'm just finishing a Bluejacket kit of the same boat.
I certainly agree with your choice for a model. I have a New York 25 on my bucket list. Looking forward to your progress.
Good luck,
Bob

Today, I, started by adding the piece of Birch ply to the Transom, wich I had pre-cut. Next I laid out the parts that make up the Base of the Keel. ( this was something that I wanted to get right this time around ) I then cut out the parts and installed them. I then Faired all the frames. Next will be to make up the Keel section and add the Garboard, Followed by the Sheer plank. then were off and running to plank the rest of the Boat. Here are the results

During the Week and today ( when I was able to squeeze in an hour or two ) I was able to get all the pieces cut, that make up the Keel and install them, I then installed the Rib Bands. So far the Boat lines up right on the Money, ( this is by far the best way to build this Boat ) next will be to Fair the frames and start work on the Keel. Here are the results

Thank you, Patrick, I am hoping that this one turns out as well as the second one, and will be able to Sail like the first one.
Thank you, Michael, I plan to add a lot moreTeak to this one, and will be taking more time to build. ( I have put my Bags back on, and am in the process of building a few Custom Homes) so for the most part I will be building this Boat on the weekend's ( and whenever I can squeeze in an hour here or there ) I am catching up on your Bristol Pilot Cutter, that is an amazing Boat
Thank you, Nils, So far, She is coming out right on the money, I am very pleased with the results

After some time away from model building ( about 3 months ), I finally have enough of a break to get a start on building the Buzzards Bay 14ftr. Designed by L. Francis Herreshoff. This will be my 3rd build log on this topic ( I have always had an admiration for this Boat ), However this build will be done in the upside down fashion.( the other 2 were built using a Keel/strongback setup ), I belive that building the Boat in this manner will ( the same as if it were built full scale ), will give a more accurate boat. I started by setting up the building jig, Cutting out the frames and setting them up in the jig. Here are the results

Hello shipmates, I would like to ask, whether the way that i have tied the grey thread around the black rope(I don't know the term in English) seems proper since its color is different ? Should i tie a black thread ? How they look like ? Thank you in advance!!! :)
Kind regards

Hello shipmates, Marc - Greg - Jeff , I do thank you for your help and your suggestions... I was not quiet happy with the result, so, i took it of and i bought some new netting and installed it. I also used more fine rope to bind the net on the bowsprit. The result, for me at least, is better.... :D
Slog-Nigel-Boyd - Patrick thank you for pushing the L button... :)
The first photo shows the netting yesterday, the others the new one...

Hi Dimitri
Your Amerigo Vespucci looks amazing, you are doing a great job.
Regarding the net colour, I am sending you attached a couple of A.V. pictures I found on internet
On the first picture the net seems to be beige, but on the other one it looks more white. I think it is just the natural rope colour,
The more important is that you like the result, it is your model
Have fun
Kind regards
Marc

Good evening, I put the 1st net on the bowsprit but i think i did a mistake that i painted white ..... seems fake ... Now either i will order another net and rebuild it, or i will try with caution to paint it grey... Although I have second thoughts that the rope binder around the net should be more fine !!! Any help or suggestions are always welcome.
Kind regards
Dimitris
