neat idea Don.......I think the metal hardware might look more modern though. I'll keep it in mind though thanks for the idea.

Just a thought on the hatch cover lifting rings, on my Trabakul build I used rope handles. Might be easier to scale down

thanks for the kind comments and the likes. that's an interesting question Hof.......on clipper ships like the cutty, they are also covered with a tarp of sorts. I'm not going to do that.....I'd rather show the hold covers as they are. it would be hard pressed to find rings that small.........let alone try to attach them. but in reading your question, I seem to have come up with a cool solution. of course, they don't supply anything for this in the kit, but I do have some really small eye bolts. they are copper colored though, but I don't think it will matter in this case. all I would need to do is bend the rings over 90 degrees and drill holes to install them. four per cover should do the trick what do ya think of that?
thanks Don and Patrick I think I'm starting to warm up to the kit {take my temperature.......is that possible?!?!?!?!}
I'm beginning the deck planking.......first thing I looked at was how the bow spirit fit through the knight head. though this won't be seen, due to the fore deck and windlass, I wanted to make sure I ran the planking far enough under the fore deck. I'm still hesitant about cementing in the fore deck because of the hawse holes for the anchors. I've been looking at Cyril's model, and they appear to locate below the main deck platform.......inaccessible if this is true. the study continues...........and so does the deck planking
thanks again to all interested

I didn't get as far as I would have liked yesterday........I was site surfing while I was making the hold covers. I got as far as getting them trimmed and planked, and then giving them the stain.
this morning, I gave them the lacquer coat and set them aside to dry.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! I was able to get back to painting the buoys for the Syborn! happy, happy, joy.....joy! when they were dry, they were dry fitted on the deck.
I have a picture of the aft most hold cover, to show with the relation to the bulkhead that I painted the flat green. when the deck is finally planked and lacquered, and the outer hull is painted, I think this will be a nice blend of green. that's why I painted the flat green sparingly along the entire deck layout. I had a second though of putting the aft cabin on the deck.......instead, here is that picture.
I still need to accent the aft bulwarks and deck with the annegre and mahogany.........I can't wait to try and make the piece to go around the transom. the cap rail will be the same process.

I'm doing OK Pat.......last week was fun for me. it felt good to be back at it. I'm working on the hold tops {as promised}......should have them done by this evening. that bulwark issue I had {the cracked port side} is totally gone! they are as sturdy, as if they still had the posts I'm very happy about that. gotta get back to painting those buoys....only forty-something beads in two colors...how hard can that be!?!?!?! I'll get that trawler build up and moving again thanks for the good word, and thanks for asking 'bout how I am.......very thoughtful
thanks to every one for the likes......still look'in for the ship in this box........I know it's in here somewhere!

I just cleaned out the camera and there were these four pictures. I accented the holds and the bulkheads in flat green...it should go nicely with the outer hull color. the layout is outlined in mahogany, so the main deck is ready for deck planking. the fore deck and the poop deck will follow. enjoy
I still need to do the hold tops........tomorrow

hello all! sorry for the silence......I just wanted to get through my work week. now that it's done and behind me, I can look forward to some extended time off......I took the upcoming weekend off. I didn't stop at the last update.......I'm sure there are a few more pictures in the camera. I'll dig them out and post them.
hello Pat......a funny thing happened on the way to the trawler. I was painting the buoys........but I had the structures on my desk, and I ended up tinkering with them instead. I will get back to the Syborn very soon.........I've done everything that was bugging me about the Thermopylae. now I can plank the deck........that'll boggle my mind with all the small pieces I'll have to cut {I'll NEED a distraction}. I did get a chance to try Michael's Idea..........
thanks Patrick.......I feel the same way about the like button.
thanks OC
welcome aboard Dave........enjoy

zoly99sask reacted to EJ_L in La Couronne by EJ_L - FINISHED - Corel - 1:100 - 1637 Version
Ratlines and stays on the main top mast have been completed! This finishes the last of the large mast sections. I plan on working on S.R. for a while and advance the planking some more on it but, when I return I think a bigger push will be in order. I plan on building the mizzen top mast as well as the fore and main top gallants and all the flag staffs. There is not much rigging needed for them and as there are no more platforms to build the construction of those masts should be relatively simple. Plus, that will finish up mast construction and then I can start on the yards!
I must admit that with every new line I rig I tend to spend more and more time just sitting back and looking at her and I am getting more and more excited about seeing the finished ship. Still months away but it is much closer to the finish than the start!

Well it's been a month and I don't have much to show for it. Thanks to all for stopping in, for your likes and great comments. I bought an android box for my TV and have been wasting too much time watching that, great device but be careful!!. Here are some pictures of what little I have accomplished:
These are the completed demizanas and their rack
This is a before and after shot of the pedestals for the new stand I built. These are some sort of pistons that my favourite son-in-law(my only one) gave to me. I just turned them on the lathe to clean them up and size them, nothing to technical here.
Milling the slot for the keel, this is a piece of rosewood
This is all the pieces, the base is cherry. I drilled out the brass pedestals and epoxied some 1/8" brass pins in
And here it is assembled with four coats of poly. The brass pedestals were given two coats of spray lacquer
These two pictures are showing the railing installed and the demizanas/rack installed
Here is a shot of one of the supporting posts down in the hold, complete with dust. lol
And this is how she looks this morning
Next up are some breast plates(I think that's what they are called) at the bow and stern then a top rail at the stern. Sorry no bow shots, there is some re-contruction going on that I am really not too proud of
Thanks for stopping in and enjoy your day

Thank you all! I will start my next build as soon as I read through the in
structions a few times as well as Kurt's articles. I also need to rearrange my work area to better suit the new build. Anyway, here are the photos! I apologise for the unprofessional background.
Until next time!

As of 8:26 this morning my Phantom has been finished! I have yet to get some photos of it, but when I do I will post them! Thank you all very much for following along with this build and giving me plenty of help and advice, as well as compliments and constructive criticism! I hope to see you all in my next build! I have not yet started a log because I still need to make a case and reorganize the workshop for the new boat.

I seem to have issues with the "Edit" but wished to extend my regards to John Earle in putting me on the Modelling path that has kept my "Nose Clean" for many years.
If i can "Wax Lyrical" the Hobby has kept me well "Grounded" for many years and issues. (Meditation in my Ship Room, if you will.)
Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,
Thought I'd share my Bluenose II Build a few Years ago.
My second ever build with guidance from Mr Earl. (Definitely not deceased!! )
So, some photos in the may provide some inspiration/guidance to others. Hope the photos are in some semblance of order.

zoly99sask reacted to dvm27 in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Druxey is certainly correct, Mark. I find that anguishing and deliberating over redoing a part takes more time than the actual repairs. My motto - when in doubt, rip it out! Of course that could explain why my models take so long to complete.

zoly99sask reacted to DocBlake in Independence 1775 by DocBlake - Artesania Latina - 5/16" scale.
After a nice, relaxing vacation, I'm back working in "Independence". I made the new main mast and foremast out of swiss pear, tapered them and squared the tops where the doublings are. The topmasts are made of maple. The bowsprit is pear and the jib boom is maple also. Since I plan to dye the masts black between the doublings, the cheeks, trestletrees, crosstrees and bolsters will all be pear, also. I placed a sailor on the quarterdeck to give a sense of scale.

zoly99sask reacted to DocBlake in Independence 1775 by DocBlake - Artesania Latina - 5/16" scale.
Thanks, guys!
Ken: The sailor is 44mm tall, which is 5'6" in scale height...typical height for a man in the mid to late 18th century.
Clare hess chose to stain his masts black between the doublings. I think it looks good and I've added a photo of the result. But I also like the look of pear and maple, without any black stain, as my masts appear now. I've not yet cut the topmasts to length nor made the fids. what do you all think? Black stain or natural wood?

zoly99sask reacted to DocBlake in Independence 1775 by DocBlake - Artesania Latina - 5/16" scale.
You're right about the historical accuracy of black between the doublings, Russ. Anyone with the opposite opinion?.
-
zoly99sask reacted to donrobinson in Independence 1775 by DocBlake - Artesania Latina - 5/16" scale.
I vote natural, I myself could not bear to hide those colors
-
zoly99sask reacted to DocBlake in Independence 1775 by DocBlake - Artesania Latina - 5/16" scale.
I tend to agree, Don. The ship is "stylized" anyway. Bulwarks are redheart, not vivid red pain, and the planking below the wales is all holly, and it doesn't follow the waterline. The detail at the doublings is some of the most interesting on the ship and I think it tends to get lost with the black dye.

The way I see it Dave, you have gone to all this work "painting with wood" why crap out now and use paint or stain. Carry on, it is looking super!!

zoly99sask reacted to Larry Van Es in Armed Virginia Sloop by captgino - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1/48
You can remove most of the solder with the wire brush tool for the dremel. Then re-blacken. But I don't really see anything in the photo though. Remember that you won't be able see it as closely once the ship is rigged as you can holding it in your hand. The galley stack and tree pumps came out nice.

zoly99sask reacted to captgino in Armed Virginia Sloop by captgino - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1/48
First metal work. I decided to upgrade the galley stack.
Question: I notice that the 'brass black' does not stain as much the solder joint. Any suggestions?
