Lets have a little surprise gathering tonight

a litle tribute to Capt. Marryat, the almost (al least in Germany) forgotten godfather of naval storys.

Ther are a lot of thíngs that make a quarterdeck looking "authentic", the capstan, the wheel and of course the binnacle.

... and aft of the wheel the (one and only) ships lamp.

Thank you for your kind welcome contributions

Indeed I found some almost forgotten pictures from the early beginning of ths project.

Building the bow section I felt inspired by the plank on frame guys   Surprises stern is rather unpretentious, she is a french corvette of under 500 tons.

Miss Unité as she appeared before make up...    and in full dress

Most of Surprises metal parts are not brass but alluminium.

    The Guns

The 12pounder guns are too big for such a small frigate, but I followed POB  in this detail. Despite the weight, it is empirical obvious that you can´t handle them properly.

The barrels are tin casts in silicone molds, the carriages constist of some 50 pieces each

Hello Greg, the scale is 1:48

Well the pictures above represent more or less the actual status, meanwile shrouds and stays have partly been rigged.

It all started with a quite conventional framework from plywood. The depicted laser measurement of the completed hull was just a joke, but it turned out quite helpful to fix the waterline...

instead of clumpsy carvings I invented a more "impressionist" way of applying plausible looking, but rather indefinite details, using wood putty and photo etched oakleafs. The whole area is painted anyway.

Miss "Unité", the figurehead was created from a mixture of materials, using plastic bodyparts, copper and putty. She tured out to have a (late) 19th century look rather than representing the 18th but frankly, I like her

The three Lower Deck Beams are 8" wide x 9" deep, and have a round-up of 3". I've made them from Swiss Pear :

The beams are "let in" (i.e. notched) to the deck clamps by 1" :

Thank you for the comments Greg, John, Albert, Neale and Druxey - much appreciated.

Thanks for the clarification Druxey .

Treenailing has finished for a while - there were about 750 in this section. I used 1 1'4" (scale) "nails" in the thicker timbers, and 3/4" in the Footwaling. No finish has been applied yet :

The Keelson is bolted through the Keel with a Lip Bolt to each frame :

The Mainmast Step is substantial - 1'10" x 1'8" in section, and 5'3" long. I cut and chiselled the under face to fit the Limber Strakes :

The completed step. All edges are chamfered :

Finally the holidays are over and I can get back to modeling.  In painting the hull I messed up the rivet band so that had to be redone.  Plans are to paint the bulwarks and deck, install the rail and start on the cabins.  Here are the pictures for now.

Some decent progress on the Cruiser over the Christmas/new year period with the bow largely completed with the addition of head rails and hair brackets etc.
This makes her look like a proper ship.

The process was started with cheeks, followed by determining positions for the catheads and hawse holes and bolsters. The catheads have slots and holes cut for anchor lifting blocks and are also pinned in place with a brass rod through each.
The cathead knees were cut with the help of paper templates from a single block as per the effort on my granado build. Lots of trial and error to get them symmetrical and sitting right.

The pic below makes it look like catheads are uneven and things are off but it's distortion of the iPad camera at close range.

A brass strip with a moulded pattern filed out was scraped along the components for decorative edge moulding effect.

The rails were cut from timber that had been fibreglassed on one side for strength. However, once the whole production is assembled it's surprisingly strong and should take a few knocks.

I'll likely add a grating of some sort between the rail but am lacking any reference so will just cobble up something that looks right.

A summer holiday awaits so that'll be it in the shipyard for a while. Next up are the channels, which I hope should be fairly simple. Then that's the hull pretty much done.

I'm still here, still working slowly away when I can. Planking is closer, 4 planks left each side plus a stealer .... & I'm still hoping that the clouds will part soon & reveal whereth should reside the stealer plank... But there's still time for that so I'll press on at my glacial pace & hope that it will all become clear at the appropriate time.

Today we celebrated the 90th birthday of Bill Gale (son of the designer of the craft I'm building). Retired from sailing last year after 75 seasons; Bill with two lady admirers, Ranger (the boat that started it all) & our boat Cherub (further away).

    The keel is laid down.

The picture shows the current version compared with the old keel in 1/48.

Due to the larger scale it is much easier to display small details such as the treenails to scale correctly.

The next steps in the construction of the complete keel arrangement are the same as described in my old build log. I will only change some smaller details.

    Hello Mehmet,
On the last posted pictures of your model the model looks more worn out than the boat named Aksona. Although with the paint and the replacement plank, the model looks genuine and realistic. I would say: go on, just don't exaggerate. I like your work!
