I sealed the hull with thinned fiberglass resin yesterday and today I applied the first coats of paint. The red beneath the waterline is just a temporary placeholder until I get copper.

I made the beakhead'ish thing, I made it by cutting grooves into my mockup version then setting small pieces of square stock into the grooves which were then glued onto the sides with some CA, I temporarily glued each halve into place then glued two pieces of square stock between them to hold them together.
Should I go straight along the top edge or have a curve like the one I marked on it in the last two pictures?

I took some pictures of today, overalls and closeups.

A closeup of the stem showing a mockup of the proposed beakhead'ish trim piece.

A closeup showing one of the gunport sills.

Firstly I wish to thank everyone for the welcome. This is my first ever build log so it may take a while to find my feet. I am working from drawings that I received from a friend although as there is no stern or bow view I think at least 1 page is still missing. After much trial and error through the drawing and cutting stages as well as materials I have now achieved the basic shape of the hull although the stern will be work in progress for a while yet. I am currently waiting for my first delivery of timber which will include 5mm x 1mm beech strips for the first layer of planking as well as 5mm x 5mm walnut  strip for beams. As you will notice I am also building the hull in stages starting with the keel to lower gun deck. This was decided (after filling the spaces between the top of the bulkheads with pine blocks) and the rest with balsa that I should have a strong enough base to mount the upper halves of the bulkheads as well as adding more if required. Once the planks arrive I shall complete the shaping of the hull and decide whether to take the curve of the stern higher,(I'm afraid I'm not sure of the term for this) It doesn't quite look right to me.

Thanks Alan. I will try to post the drawing I have but here is the latest view with a line marking the possible curve for the stern. As you can see I was a little heavy handed with the sanding but a little balsa sheet and filler can fix it.
I have tried to add a couple of pictures of the drawings I have and since my last post have sanded down the stern either side of the keel and have divided up the hull into planking segments into 20mm bands in the midships. I hope these add to this post ok. Lines on the stern have not been continued yet as I am still not completely convinced the hull is correct yet.

Yes' I'm a big Doctor who fan. Since I named it the Byzantium and the Byzantium on Doctor Who had a weeping angle on board I decided that it would make the perfect figurehead.

Sorry its been so long since my last post. Since my last post I have made the weeping angel figurehead, there's nothing more intimidating than a twelve foot tall statue of an angel covering its eyes. the figurehead is made from Sculpty. After I took the pics I did some work on aging.

Thanks to everyone who have visited and clicked on "like."  It's really very encouraging.

I spend most part of the day making a new lid and playing with building a mock-up for the hinges.

The lid is finished and temporarily put on the bun hole.  Now I need to finish the mock-up and figure out how to make the hinges.  Looks like a bowed bracket may do the trick.  I may leave this for a while and do some main deck work like cementing the torpedo loading trolley tracks and paint the deck.  In the meantime I'll do some thinking on the hinges.

Well, here is the new and third lid.

The fit is passable, I may fiddle some more with it and I could even paint the starboard side of the hull

As you can see the braces are now much better and so are the little holes.  I think I'll keep this one

    Cheers,

Some final touches to the stern (windows) and start filing up the deck with all the items and gears found there including some decoration heads as I have seen them on Batavia a ship of the same period. I had the idea to make the pump moving. But gave up. too many hour for that tiny part

Created a jig for the shrouds.  This keeps every thing in place while I glue on the ratlines.  In order for this ship to fit in the bottle I have to add the masts after the hull is in.  The shrouds will have to be glued to the side of the hull after they are in.  That means the ratlines will be what provides the proper spread of the shrouds.

My rigging box has turned out to be pretty versatile.

I started work on the ship which is going to be HMS Sophie from Master and Commander by Patric O-Brian. The hull is made from some fine grained softwood I had left over from a previous project, the bulwarks are made from card.
The HMS Sophie changed paint schemes throughout the book so I chose the one that I could make with the paint that I had.
