donrobinson got a reaction from captgino in Trabakul by donrobinson - FINISHED - MarisStella - 1:32 scale
Hello all, first up Thanks for all your visits, likes and gracious comments. Trabakul now has a new home on the dining room table as rigging has started and there is less chance of her getting hurt and even a less of a chance of me using the table to entertain.
Bowsprit was first, this the little fitting made to hold it in place
The little supports on either side and a strap with rings( I used eyebolts)
Chain installed
Lower shrouds completed
Next up is the upper shrouds and then ratlines.
Enjoy and Take care

donrobinson got a reaction from CaptainSteve in Barque Stefano by donrobinson - MarisStella - 1:63
As if two builds are not enough here is my third.
I just received this last week, it is MarisStella's latest kit, and was going to wait for awhile but could not resist the temptation to start her. I wonder with the name Stefano is it a him? I won't go into the history but it is quite interesting and there is a book written about it.
At 1121 mm long it is going to be a big build, it has copper plates and photo etched brass fittings which I believe is a first for MarisStella. As always with MarisStella the kit looks incredible, wood seems excellent and all laser cut pieces are on quality plywood (some of it being Finnish Birch) or solid walnut.
Some features are:
double planked hull walnut/lime
double planked deck walnut/lime
over 260 m. of rope in five sizes
over 800 wooden fittings(blocks, deadeyes etc.)
38 brass sheaves ( 2 & 4 mm)
four different sizes of chain
34 sails
14 sheets of plans
Clearly it is going to be a great build and I am pumped up to get started. I got a leg of pork in the smoker and all fridges are full of refreshments so come on over, it's going to be a long ride but a goodie!

Popeye: I like that comment, gave me a good laugh. Thanks for stopping in
Mike: Thanks Mike, sorry to disappoint about the tarps. I seen tarps here on MSW somewhere and I think they used tissue paper, if I remember I'll let you know.
Ian: There is really no way of turning the mast tops in one piece, I carved those from 8 mm dowels. The very top end of the mast tops were made separately then attached later.' The sheave in the mast top, from what I can see, does not get used in the rigging so I suppose it could be skipped if you wish. I will have to check, but I'm sure I showed this in my log earlier on and if not I will look to see what I have here. Thanks for stopping by.
I just had a look, check out page three of the log

Hi Mark, Thanks for the compliment. It is very crowded on the boat side and would be nearly impossible to get around as is. The plans show it in this position, there is a write up on it where it says sometimes the boat was towed or even tied to the shrouds. I'm thinking in real life the hatch would be closed allowing access across that or maybe the boat may have been stowed on top of the hatch during a long voyage. Thanks again for stopping in.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the comment you made me chuckle with that one. How is the rope making going? Mine came to a halt when I broke the machine, Alexey sent me a new part so I hoping to up and going soon.

Good to hear from you EJ, Thanks so much. This was my first ship's boat I've built and was amazed how much time it took.

Good Evening All. Thanks for all the visits, comments and likes it is all really appreciated.
This post is about the final stages of the ship's boat, I won't bother you with a bunch of chatter and explanations, however, if you have any questions please ask. I will be happy to answer, even though it maybe just made up.
Here we go:
There are a few flaws but as they say "she is good enough for me and the girls I go with".
Next up is the bowsprit

Hey Doug, in the picture above the plan is showing the port side of the bow and stern. On the left side, the stern just a rope is going to the rudder, the other side is the bow. In a previous post I showed a picture of the plans that was showing the starboard side of the stern where there was a blocking system, I think it was in post 506. Hopefully this clears things up for you, if not let me know and I can re-post the two pictures side by side which may make it easier to see what I am saying. I don't mind, let me know.

Ian: Thanks, it is a good way of making lots of oars in a short time
EJ: Thanks, I have been putting off building this ship's boat for sometime now thinking it was going to be too hard, as it turns out I am enjoying building it

A short little update, I have started the ship's boat:
Here is the balsa blank and a picture in the manual showing how it should look when done. Let's hope!
Laminating the top rails
Ripping some .5 x 5 mm planking to 2.5 mm wide. The off cuts will be used for the interior ribs. The carving of the boat in this picture is almost completed, shaping was done using a rasp and sanding.
Showing how the keel fits on the hull, a little bit of daylight showing there but the fit is fairly good.
First planking completed, one more layer to go
I have shown this before on another log but I thought I would show it again for those who might have missed it. To make oars I cut the dowels to length, these are 3 mm diameter, give them a good soaking in water then put them in a vice to flatten them. From right to left this picture is showing the dowel, the blade after coming out of vice then the final product after a little sanding.
The paint is still wet in this picture but these are the finished oars for the ship's boat
Thanks to all for stopping in, for all the likes and the great comments
Enjoy Your Day

Hello Michael, welcome to the build there is always lots of room and never the need to apologise for filling up the inbox with likes. I very much enjoy that.
Drinking in the shipyard is allowed, however, until I find a way of controlling myself it is confined to spectators only. So you are good to go, fridge is in the back beside the recycle bin. Smoking is allowed in the two back rows and we ask that you turn off your cell phones while any power tools or sharp instruments are being used. All beverages are complimentary and self serve. Enjoy the voyage

I agree Jean-Pierre, same thing has happened to me.I now have my shipyard set up so that when the liquor cabinet door opens the shipyard door automatically closes and locks.

Popeye, in my post 506, the plan is showing the starboard side with blocks, this is why I thought both sides had them and didn't bother to look any further. Blocks are above the water line
Mike, I like the looks too even though it is not right
