Well, some progress in order to keep alive this topic.

    After "some" frames later...

Checking frames in place. Of course, they are not glued or finished. In fact, I must build stern frames. I've also built hawse timbers, ufff!. I think it's one of the most difficult part of a ship.

    Best regards.

    Thanks Greg,
you are right - not hours but days .
I finished the first part of planking above wales. This part will not be colored, so I used here the treenails.

Thanks to all. The idea for making treenails with needle is not mine, I learned this method from russian modelers .
To rtropp: see enclosed picture - front side of the block with treenail is covered with masking tape, block is cuted off with saw. After removing tape you can easily eject treenails from the block.
After endless hours I finished the hull treenailing. Result will be more visible after waxing.

    Hi Ben.
Im surpriced watching your effords trying to build your ship.My opinion on your problem.
You should have sealed the interior firstly,i mean the inner shell to avoid any structures timber deformation when it contacts with water. Its important also before paint the body to use wood sealant colour putty just to ensure its sealled, and before use any paint or varnish ,need to apply a primer oil.
    Excelent work

Building the sprockets, the deep ones will be motor driven the shallow ones chain driven. The black sprocket spokes will be mounted in slots I will cut in the disc faces. The opposite side of all discs will be slotted to drive the oar rack with a spring pocket to force the rack away from centre. The deep discs will have a reinforcing band with a set screw to fasten it to the motor and the shallow ones will be mounted on a bearing.

That sounds like the best way to go, Ben. I was wondering if that'd be an option. I wish you the greatest success with it.

By the way, there are other intersting "oar-powered" vessels out there which would lend themselves to RC. The most interesting in my book is the steamboat built by the American John Fitch in the 18th century - see http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/mssc/steamboats/player_fitch2.htm . The clearest representation I've seen of the boat is below.  Thought you might be interested.

Time to make the ram! Started out by cutting templates from cardboard I cut out to fit the hull, taped them together to make sure the fit was right. With my paper templates I traced them on to brass sheeting I have, then using tin snips I cut them out of the brass sheet. I fitted the bent piece to the hull then traced around that piece on to the brass sheet below it. With that last step being done I was able to solder the rest of it together now the worst part is done but I've only half finished the ram.

A friend of mine did that with a cannon I made and photo shopped it into a civil war surrounding. I should go find that picture I think I know where it is but in the meantime here is a picture I took of it.

Glued the rowers hatches in place today, I plan on having rope handles for opening them. Cut and fitted the mast today, it actually looks better than I expected so I think I'll carry on the path I'm on.

More progress pictures. Believe it or don't it should look OK when finished I'll do my best to do a good job of blending the wood to have an acceptable look. I have been on another website and picked up some ideas regarding connecting the oars that should make a simpler and better operation. I will be using links and balls from my spare helicopter parts collection to clip the oars on the rowing beam.

The picture with the ruler is to give you an idea on the size of the vessel and the space I will have to make my mechanics function, the other picture is the start of the planking. Once I have the hull completely planked I will alter and remove certain bulkheads to make space for four servos, one RX, one RX battery pack and the linkage that will run the oars. Two servos will operate the oars the other two servos will operate the rudder and sail. I know some are wondering how can two servos do all the motion of both sides of oars, you will get the idea when I post the video of the oars electronics in motion.

I copied some plans of the Greek Bireme from a fellow modeller and made my own templates. This build is not going to be accurate as far as scale goes my main focus is the mechanics that operate the oars. To do this I require a boat to put it in and the Greek Bireme seems like the simplest multi oar build I could find. The plan is to have the oars and sail controlled by RC too. The radio will be a twelve channel Futaba with a fourteen channel receiver which I believe should be more than enough channels. Lets start with the boat shall we. The two pictures you see are the start with the keel and bulkheads.

    Hello everyone

Thank you for your workshop visits and all the like-buttons - each time, it gives me a little pleasure.

Kees, Patrick, Lawrence and Michael - all your appreciation means a lot! - thank you.

... Patrick, It's effectively what you saying and with the build of the model I'm more and more familiar with Colin Archers design. Every detail makes incredible sense to me - here, Colin Archer has left nothing to chance.

... so my first attempt on detail work (see below) - brazing is yet to come!

Reminds me of the time I almost lost my footy (inexpensive beginners model) Voyager. I was getting ready to bring her in when she slipped out of receiver range and took off strait into the wind towards the center of Lake Elsinore; luckily I was able to flag down a person on a SeaDoo to retrieve the tiny vessel.

    Hi Mike

As requested, (I don't intend to hijack your post), here is one my RC models, although it is incomplete. Here's why.

All of my RC yachts are stored in various states of neglect in the garden shed. I'll see if I can get some photos later. However, you may recall in an earlier post that I mentioned one of my models had been lost (presumed sunk) in the local river. I was heartbroken, not only because of the cost of the lost equipment, but also because she was fully detailed inside and took more than 24 mths to build. Nonetheless, I immediately set about building a complete replacement copy of the boat so that I could sail it again. Over time, I lost interest in building the replacement model and I chucked it in the workshop, where it's been gathering dust for the past 20 years. The photos of the incomplete replacement boat are below:

    Cheers

    Patrick

    Hi all
Thanks to all visitors for showing in and all the assessments with the like button.
@Patrick Thank you for the nice comment and encouragement.
Do you still have your RC boats? or maybe the one or the other photography?
    - about a possible post I would be very happy.

    @ Bob
I also thank you for your comment. Yes, 'Stavanger's ' inner surface I have sealed with epoxy and fiber glass tissue. (see also below and post no. 121).

As I have mentioned in the last log, the invisible hairline cracks in the wood of the keel were the reason for the water penetration. As the first corrective action, I have treated the keel wood inner side with an Epoxy layer – and after all, the big planked areas were seald from the beginning.

But also the external coating has to be waterproof, this means the teaching of the lesson of swelling and shrinkage (see in last post). Therefore I decided to grind down the existing primer generously and to treat the whole outside of the hull with the real stuff!  PRIMOCON (from International) is a one-component primer used in yacht building for the underwater area on all kinds of surfaces - as far as my assumption that what is good enough for the originals for the "little" is right. I have finally used acrylic paint to the final coating.

    Best regards
    Mike

    Hello everyone
Thanks to all visitors for showing in and all the assessments with the like button.

    @ Patrick and Bob
Thanks a lot for your feedbacks! – Bob, I suspect the question concerning "Vodka" came from Russia, yes?

    To the shipyard ...

There was much detail work in the past few months concerning the preparations of the deck - I will report in the next logs. Among other things I spent a lot of time to gain clarity about the RC installation - or at least an idea of, before the deck gets closed. This is the reason for the long silence on “Stavanger's“ Log.

First of all, the marking of the CWL (respectively painting line) was necessary. Second was the first swimming test ... it was a full setback!  I had to realize that the hull was not ready for water at this time ...

... about my corrective measures in the next log.

Till then and all the best,
    Mike
