Still working on the tripple AA's ...

How life takes ... rips away time ... last update nearly three weeks ago
Yesterday more garden chores ... but today it's raining - or as Mark (MTaylor) says, time for the workshop - and I pulled out the airbrush again. Nothing fancy, just trying my hand on shading, but my finger was somewhat trigger happy from time to time
The single and tripple AA have a black primer, they'll get first a coat of medium grey, and some light highlights - see how that will work out.
And a bit of a model on the side ... (started a log here)

Got the perforated beams for the "flight deck" in place (need to take a picture during day time). Finished the covered 25mm AA (12x), and have all parts for the uncovered cut and bent. Remains to put them together. Easier said than done ... Unfortunately life keeps on getting in the way: Had to work last weekend again, so little progress (start to sound like Sam [src] )

These were sprayed at 20 psi, trigger pulled half open (thanks Pat) a lot less paint loss
And naturally, to keep my finger's dexterity into shape ... PE cutting and folding ...
There is more where this came from ........

Some samples of my priming work, three to four layers each to get it covering the plastic. I'll be adding some dark tones to get some depth in the final layer(s). Right now it is a bit "sterile"
(Piet, hope these cause less "anxiety" on your fragile eyes )
Still some more airbrushing to do. Enough practise with this build(!)

Started priming some of the parts, they're drying now, dropped one which I can sand and repaint, fortunately not the tower ... or some of it's parts. So before getting all ... you know what, I cleaned my airbrush, and made myself a log bench from a piece of cherry ...
Needs some smoothing, but we can sit, and I can ponder on my multitude of building erros

These little paper embossing tools work fantastic for precision placement of super glue. The little ball on the end of the tool allows you to place a tiny "dot" of glue just where you want it.

Besides having been a major nuisance to myself - debugging a program for bugs all week long - I have managed to accomplish some things on a more happy note. Sparkling PE
From parts to the full fledged thing a ma jig ... nearly forgot, one of the two airplane catapults ... (why didn't they use those for boats, much faster launching!)
Had a lovely Dutch sky Yesterday (just around the corner ...)

No, I didn't stop, just had a serious back problem, a software release which didn't release yet, and heaps of other excuses.
I've been working - on and off - on the hull, did some PE here, and some PE there. Got a third hand from MM (it's eye candy!!!) dropped something on the funnel which the funnel didn't like so I had the first repairs ... probably more to come ... anyways lads (any lasses?) without further a do some more eye food
Michael Mott's hand (he is currently working with a single one I presume ...?)
A side ladder (pilot's ladder?), and davits. These look so much better than the plastic junk from the kit
and for a change I picked p sme PE, and started on the first catapult, parts and initial fases
Still a lot more work to do. As I wrote on Greg's topic, it seems that the old tool has far less, or not such good detail on the plastic, as the new tool. Have quite a number of sheets left!!!
Cheers

Some minor progress. Going slowly, not even steadily!
P.s. When I upload my images it's owner and copyright properties get lost ... any reason why that happens???

Found some blast bags for the 15mm turret guns in the Pontos update set. I changed the gun mounts for them, started on the mounts off the 46" guns rear most one finished, the other two to do. I must, however, raise the guns for the rear one of the two, else the barrels will get all tangled up in the railing. Yesterday I started at 22:00 and finished today at 03:00 on the trypod mast just behind the funnel.

The funnel has been "brassed over", some more work to do on the front tower/bridge, finished the rear tower, and the rear 15mm gun
Rear 15mm turret
Looks good, until I mounted the rear tower ... it seems I have to get rid of some railing, if I want that turret to be able to move around
buggers
Still a lot of brass to add to rear turret. Next the front 15mm turret, and all the tripple AA guns ... I found that giving the plasstic a preliminairy coat of CA, and another when gluing the brass had the best result for me
Cheers

Components of the covered AA gun, and replacement parts
Some careful treading on the funnel. Had a hard time getting those brass thready thingies on ...
Before with some more bling bling on the forward tower, and two additional gun directors (they had some gun directors and rangefinders installed on these ships!!)
and after

Carl, my workshop is in the basement - very narrow windows - no much daylight - so I use one of those accordian arm desk lamps with a 75 watt LED bulb rated for daylight (5000 K). Provides plenty of light for even hand-held photos at ISO 400-800 at f/8.

PeteB reacted to cog in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
New and improved formula I got my studio tripod out, increased iso to 800, set f-stop at 20, et voilà
if you look good, you see the front is perforated
or slightly easier on the eyes ...

Thanks Greg, but I feel the novice once again. It has been over 40 years since I build a ship of plastic, and in this size ... it is my first.
As promised, some better pictures, at least light-wise, still need to improve the depth of focus.

Actually manage to do something today. Not much folding but a little bit of this, and a little bit of that ...
Neither the tower, nor the funnel are glued yet
I'll try to get some better pictures with daylight tomorrow

As I had to wait for fine grain sandpaper, I started on the other part of the super structure. Current status in image format
and some more brass handywork ...

Cog, I have put the funnel from the old tool to compare with the new. As you can see the new is a bit taller and wider. The New tool comes with internal baffles in PE, I just had to add ladders. I don't know if Mushasi was much different tho.
-
PeteB reacted to cog in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
Some slight progress. I'm waiting on 2000 - 3000 grit sandpaper before I can finish the funnel. The brass is all from the Fly Hawk detail set. Pontos didn't have the rangefinder neither the flooring for this particular item.
That's all for now,
cheers

Pat,
Thanks for your vote of confidence!
What's an AA gun but a few pieces of brass, untill you lay your hands on one ... hands might be a rather crushing word for the size I'm working at ... The funny thing is, it's not the eyes which wear out (especially not with a visor), but the nimble finger tips which start to shiver and shake. It doesn't help much, the vibes, getting everything onto it's pre-defined pinpoint spot. I can do a few hours at the time, and that's not a lot of guns. Mind you, I've just finished the single (25) and double (2 whole pieces!!!) variants. The tripple will be done at some future date. That one will be worse, i.e. bending brass-wise, and has some nice fragile parts to break:

Thanks Greg, as I feel yours
Started on the funnel ... pontos has a brass ring which should go on top, but it is 2mm to wide. Fly Hawk's is different but seems to fit
Pontos on the right, Fly Hawk on the left
