  1. I was told by a modeller of AL that a nitrocellulose varnish can do the job... I dont know....I never tryed it and dont know about the fume
  2. Thank you my friend... so varnish is not needed. The problem tough in my case is that I cant use easily solvent based filler because of my asthma.... ok if I must then I ll look for some safety mask etc. But I just thoght that a varnish will do...
  3. First time I need to paint my wooden model with paints. Am going to use the vallejo label, its water based... and I wonder if before painting and after fine sandpaper a varnish will help? Gloss or matt... thats maybe irrelevant because the paint will cover the varnish anyway. But is it really essential to use before paint a varnish or even another acrylic clear paint? Or can I go ahead with painting after sanding and tha will do?
  4. Thank you wefalck for your help. But please tell me if we speak in terms of bulkheads and not frames would it be correct to say: the shorter plank distance is between 2 bulkheads?
  5. I wonder how short can the shortest plank (SP) be. Is there a rule to it? If a ship has average planks of 18 feet*, how short can its SP be? 6 feet? Thats ca. 30% of the avarege plank, that will do or is it rather too small? * of course its a question again how this avarage plank is derminated or better.... how long can an avarage plank be?
  6. mikiek thank you. Just went over it... great practical help! Very usefull.
  7. Jud thats a very reallistic and dramatic response, reflecting the answer as a picture of 1000 words! Thank you very much. Its out of a seamans (officers) logbook I guess...
  8. mtaylor thank you for yor response. I havent started building yet... am in the prosses of studying the ship. I always keep a log and take pictures but never did it publik. I allways publish later with a video on youtube. I dont know may be this time I try this here in our blog.
  9. I wonder about the function of the two capstans on my french frigate. The one is for the anchor... ok. What about the second one? In his book the director of Rochefort museum names the capstans, the one as "the small capstan" and the other as "the main capstan" Here are the plans taken out from De Fontanieus book, showing both capstans position on the ship. Any one knows what each one does?
  10. Thank you John for your time and valuable help.... I downloaded the link and am going tu give it a good study, so as with your comment. I think am moving forward now thank you again. Christos
  11. Thank you John for your response. If I get it right, you mean that I mark on the bulkheads every strake line from stem to stern? Christos
  12. Thank you mtaylor. Idid found it in model expo as you advised me.... amazon de and uk dont have it. Thank you again Christos
  13. Problem is cant find it.... could you be so kind and advice me where I can get it?
  14. Need advise guys.... So: Tapering the Garboard plank its made on the plankside facing the keel... the other side stays a straight line. All the other planks are tapered on the oposite side. That is , the planks are tapered on the side facing the wale. And ofcourse at the end, the last plank which closes the endgap, is between two straight sides (garboard and last planank facing the wale), it can be a spilled plank, tapered on both side. Is that correct? Do I get the planking process correct so? Are there also other proceses?
  15. If after thatt they still wonr bend it means you have to let them soak more. Ihad a kit once with such hard wood that I soaked ithe planks all night long
  16. Thanks philo In the mean time I spoke with a gentelman -modeller- from AL and he gave me the coresponding colors to the real ship in Vallejo numbers. If you wish I can send you the actuall numbers AL gave me. Chris
