Prepare wood for acrilyc paint
MESSIS replied to MESSIS's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Thank you my friend... so varnish is not needed. The problem tough in my case is that I cant use easily solvent based filler because of my asthma.... ok if I must then I ll look for some safety mask etc. But I just thoght that a varnish will do... -
First time I need to paint my wooden model with paints. Am going to use the vallejo label, its water based... and I wonder if before painting and after fine sandpaper a varnish will help? Gloss or matt... thats maybe irrelevant because the paint will cover the varnish anyway. But is it really essential to use before paint a varnish or even another acrylic clear paint? Or can I go ahead with painting after sanding and tha will do?

Capstan functions

Thank you jbshan -
I wonder how short can the shortest plank (SP) be. Is there a rule to it? If a ship has average planks of 18 feet*, how short can its SP be? 6 feet? Thats ca. 30% of the avarege plank, that will do or is it rather too small? * of course its a question again how this avarage plank is derminated or better.... how long can an avarage plank be?

mtaylor thank you for yor response. I havent started building yet... am in the prosses of studying the ship. I always keep a log and take pictures but never did it publik. I allways publish later with a video on youtube. I dont know may be this time I try this here in our blog. -
I wonder about the function of the two capstans on my french frigate. The one is for the anchor... ok. What about the second one? In his book the director of Rochefort museum names the capstans, the one as "the small capstan" and the other as "the main capstan" Here are the plans taken out from De Fontanieus book, showing both capstans position on the ship. Any one knows what each one does?

Planking processes

Thank you very much Sir Christos -
Need advise guys.... So: Tapering the Garboard plank its made on the plankside facing the keel... the other side stays a straight line. All the other planks are tapered on the oposite side. That is , the planks are tapered on the side facing the wale. And ofcourse at the end, the last plank which closes the endgap, is between two straight sides (garboard and last planank facing the wale), it can be a spilled plank, tapered on both side. Is that correct? Do I get the planking process correct so? Are there also other proceses?
