I'm still here! I've made a little progress on this build... several months ago I pulled the kit out and installed the masts, then it went dormant again... a recent job change and move has given me more spare time, and a "man cave", so I'm back to work on this ship... at this point I've just started the rigging. It's really starting to look good! I'll probably get some pics up tomorrow...

A better stand... still need to cut the aft timbers, and add some stain, but it already looks way nicer than the plastic thing that comes with the kit...

Made a little progress on this one!! I really don't like that stand, it looks so cheesy... I think I'm gonna try to make a nicer one out of cardstock...

Thanks for the likes! I'm really enjoying working with cardstock... As for this ship, I tried to make the masts today, not sure how that's gonna work out. They want you to roll them up out of paper, but that is a very difficult proposition... I may just make wood masts instead... (the kit mentioned that as an option). Rigging will be interesting, my intent is to do a lot more than the kit suggests, which is going to require much research on my part... should be fun...

I haven't given up on this yet, just took an extended break... I've made some progress today after roughly 1 year of nothing. I now wish I hadn't used photobucket for my pictures, should've figured something like this would happen... grrrrrrrr!! I will get some current pics up soon, and I'll see if I still have some of the older pics to re-post...

Wood masts for a plastic model... Tips?
SomethingIsFishy replied to SomethingIsFishy's topic in Plastic model kits
Wow! Thanks for sharing that picture! Big difference, could make rigging much easier for a newbie like me... -
Been a while since I've posted, been busy with other things lately... A little more progress... I plan on spraying the deck with a flat clear. No good hobby shops close to me so I'm working with Hobby Lobby's limited paint selection...

Wood masts for a plastic model... Tips?
SomethingIsFishy replied to SomethingIsFishy's topic in Plastic model kits
Chuck- I believe he said it was a finished model. Thunder- thanks for checking! Since the masts are two halves glued together I might try adding some thin tubing or stiff wire in between the halves... -
I agree! This ship carries a rather interesting story... The book also has very detailed rigging instructions which will be very helpful, I just need to make sense of them in my head. I'm sure I will figure it out as I go along...

Wood masts for a plastic model... Tips?
SomethingIsFishy replied to SomethingIsFishy's topic in Plastic model kits
Thank you! I have just received the book and, at first glance, it appears to contain a wealth of helpful information! Just wanted to make sure I shared my appreciation for your recommendation of this book! -
Reference material is here! Came with a bonus, too! Someone stashed a neat cut-away view of the mayflower from a National Geographic magazine in this book's pages! Just imagine crossing the Atlantic in this ship!! Must have been quite a journey...

Another birthday gift, started painting the hull so why not start the log? I know I started a revell Constitution when I was a kid, but never finished it. I figured it was probably the smaller one, I didn't think my parents would buy me a 3 foot long model ship, and I didn't see myself having the means to buy the big one myself. So I ordered this kit with an amazon gift card from my sister in law. It's not the one I had... after looking into reviews and videos on YouTube I have determined that I somehow ended up with the 1:96 kit as a kid!! So I don't get to "finish the one I started ", at least not now, but I'm sure I'll still have fun building this smaller one...

Waiting on the mayflower book by Hackney to arrive... amazon gives an arrival time of Oct. 17 to Nov 1... been working on a few other ships while I wait... had a great birthday (5 ship kits including this one, will do logs here on two of the others). Just in case anyone here is in the medical profession and is wondering, the cut in my thumb is almost completely healed...

Spent a few minutes painting more parts... Using almost the same color paint as the model kit is molded in. Even still, I can see the difference between "raw" plastic and painted parts... definitely worth painting, I'm excited to see this ship come together...
-
A little more paint. I liked the contrast between the tan paint I used on the decks and the color of the kit's plastic, so I chose a similar brown to paint the vents... (I think those are vents, right?).

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
