Thanks! Definitely not into self-mutilation, that was not fun! Doesn't matter how many models you've built (mostly cars, trucks, and trains for me), you still need to be careful with sharp tools!! Decided to work on the ship a little more tonight, starting to paint the main deck...

So it starts! This kit is a birthday gift from my wife, and I've been looking forward to starting the build for a while now. The kit arrived a few weeks ago, and I did open the box for inspection purposes when it came, but decided to wait to start the kit until my birthday. I do need to pick up some paint, but was going to start trimming flash from the hull and deck parts. I say "was" because I promptly buried the exacto knife in my thumb. I feel dumb because I know how to handle sharp tools, but still manage to slip and cut myself... Grrr... So I decided to take a break for today... Noel C L Hackney's book on the mayflower was recommended in another one of my threads, and has been ordered, hopefully it will be a help in building this ship...

Update: Starboard side of the hull done, and stand finished! I think I will end up trying to hide some of the more obvious white edges...

To be honest, I was thinking about leaving them white to show that it's a card model, but I'm not totally sure... the white edges don't bother me yet, but I wonder if some of the more prominent edges that appear later in construction might bother me...

Wood masts for a plastic model... Tips?

Thanks again to all of you for your input!!! My plan as of now is to go ahead and assemble the plastic masts to see how they feel, if they're solid enough to work for me I will use them. If not, then I will try wood... I will be starting the build, and the build log, on my birthday, October 9th. Is it October 9th yet?? -
Hope you can figure out your guns! From what I've read there will always be something that isn't quite right... This one was an easy fix, we will see if I find any other goof ups...

Upper decks added and upper hull "planking" laminated. The upper hull planking can be seen from the inside in several places, so there are two pieces for each side that are glued back to back. There is one issue that I found. The foremost bulkhead for the upper rear deck is plain white for some unknown reason. They do, however, include a printed part for the inside. I chose to use this inside piece on the outside instead... I don't know about you, but I can't tell it's white on the inside...

I also appreciate the tip on the book. I have looked the kit over and read thru the instructions (waiting for my birthday to start building) and found the instructions to be slightly less than clear for some steps. I'm sure that book would be very helpful... -

Thank you so much for the tips! I might try the supplied masts, I could build them and dry fit them into the hull to get a feel for how rigid or flexible they are. My only experience is with Lindberg's Jolly Roger, which has very flimsy masts... Made rigging interesting... -
Last shot for today, got the deck and lower hull on. The stand is from the basic model, the advanced kit has a much nicer stand, I just haven't built it yet...

Progress: Spray adhesive works great! Waiting for the bulkheads to dry, then I can cut them out and start assembling the frame...

I picked up some spray adhesive for laminating the framework tonight! Made sure to buy something that specifically said "does not cause warping" on the bottle. Glued the first pieces together, and weighted them down on a piece of glass to make sure they're straight. So far so good...

Thanks for the tips! I'm not necessarily against "re-purposing" things, but I do want to make sure I'm using the best option available to me. The kit I will be building (Revell Germany's Mayflower) is a birthday gift from my wife, so I plan on doing the best I can so I end up with a model I can appreciate for a long time! -

Well, it's official... I printed the advanced version tonight. I'm just not happy with the way the easier kit came together. The advanced kit uses laminated cardstock to build a frame just like a plank-on-frame wooden build. My hope is that doing it that way would make it much easier to get a properly shaped hull... Gotta pick up the right glue for laminating the cardstock, then I can start building...

It sure isn't easy getting the hull together right on the "easier" version of this model... my second attempt looks just as bad as my first... may try the "advanced" version instead, that one has an actual frame... I think that would make things much easier...

There are two versions of this kit, I'm building the "medium difficulty" version. This is my second attempt on the hull, trying to be more precise. An important tip: score all of the fold lines before glueing the pieces into shape...

I was looking for something to work on while waiting to start my next build/birthday present, so I downloaded the kit for this ship from the museum's website. I then picked up a pack of cardstock and proceeded to dig out my printer, only to find that it wouldn't work with my desktop. Was able to get it to connect to my laptop, but the ink cartridges were completely dried up. Decided to just upgrade to a better printer, so I could finally print the kit!! I have the stand done so far... I tried to start the hull, but soon found that my glueing was not nearly precise enough. Oh well, good practice... The nice part about card is I can just hit "print", and start over again. I don't think I will have this ship done by my birthday, so at that point I will bounce back and forth between the two kits as the mood strikes me... I will post pics as soon as I have something worth posting pics of... I'm done for tonight... Thanks for looking!! Edit: is it museam or museum?? Museum looks right to me, but neither one set off spell check...
