    Very tempting but likewise I have the deluxe Flyhawk kit. That's a great looking kit at a great price though. I need to reduce the size of the pile not increase it. Alan

    The detail work continues along with cleaning up the "completed" sections. The photos are ruthless at showing up the problems and the first part of the days efforts is tidying up the issues seen in the previous nights photos. The main deck railings were completed which is a major milestone for me. I think nice clean railings are one of the single most attractive upgrades but done badly they spoil the model. The ships boats were painted and mostly added to the ship. The six inch guns are on now and the four inch guns were tidied up a bit. I did find the extruded polystyrene I wanted for the fjord diorama (Lowes 24 x 24 x 1 inch for $5.95) so I will start thinking about that as well as finishing off the details and the Seafox. Masts, derrick and the catapult can then be added. Alan

    That looks like a great deal. Wood deck and everything! What is the detail like on the plastic parts? I'm going to enjoy watching this come together. Alan

    Slowly progressing through the details. Some of the parts have needed painting in my best guess of the colour scheme as I realise how they fit into the ship. The booms on the ships sides, ventilators etc. The PE railing is slowly going on. I finished the rear superstructure railings which are the last ones that have complex bends. There isn't much more PE to add now, depth chargers and and a few small details. I plan to use the plastic boat davits, they are quite nice and more three dimensional than the PE. I started painting the boats and the aircraft. The Walrus is nice but I like the Seafox better. It seems like I'm approaching the end but there are still a lot of parts left on the sprues, especially the searchlights, paravanes and small weapons. Useful for a lot of other kits where the detail is inferior. Its interesting, possibly because The Arethusa class was prewar but two quad .50 cal guns doesn't seem an exceptionally aggressive air defence system Thanks Alan

    Craig, Thank you very much for the praise; it is very encouraging from someone with your skills. For me this has been the most enjoyable build as well as the most complicated. I've enjoyed trying plot my way through the various stages of the build. I do tend to work on an element and then go and do something else for a while and maybe plot the next move. Alan

    Hi OC, I think that is one of the things I am enjoying about Penelope. With the small destroyers you can't really break out the superstructure there isn't enough of it so you do the main build then primer, then wait, then first main colour, then wait, then mask and paint again. So there are days when it seems you can only work on it for an hour. With this build there are so many areas to play with. I still have a lot more details to add to the ship, the boats need to be painted and the Seafox needs to be painted too. Alan

    Today has been spent working on the detail pieces. I weathered the wooden deck with light dry brushing of Burnt Sienna oil paint. I probably could have added more but I am nervous of overdoing it and its irreversible. Life were painted and added . I added a thin black wash to the light grey deck fittings to bring out the detail. The torpedo tubes need a bit more work. The first sets of railings are on and so far they are a good fit. The PE rails on the gun platforms were the most complex bends I have attempted with railing so I was happy to get something reasonable out of the work. Lots of lockers added and the main guns were cleaned up and are ready to install. I'm trying to tidy up painting as I go rather than wait to the end and find its tough get to the area of concern. I ordered epoxy resin and sculpting medium reedy for the fjord diorama. I was looking for extruded polystyrene for the hills but so far haven't found any. Expanded polystyrene might work but will be messier I suspect. Thanks for looking Alan

    Thanks Craig I'm learning a lot on this build; its the most complicated kit that I have attempted. It helps that the kit is so good; everything fits well and the PE integrates very nicely.

    My apologies OC, if I nudged you into getting this. The Prince of Wales hasn't shipped yet. I looked back at my last Flyhawk orders and they were ordered on May 12 and arrived on June 14. Hopefully the wait won't be much longer. Alan

    The oilbrusher kits look very interesting and seem to give nice subtle effects which is probably important at 1/700 scale. This might be the next rabbit hole to disappear down. The shortage of display space is rapidly being overtaken by the shortage of space for supplies. Thanks for showing them Alan

    Not a huge amount of progress today. I started adding the detail deck parts along with teh PE ladders. I managed to drop the first inclined ladder and spent two hours looking for it; there are no spares in the fret. I found four six inch brass gun barrels that I didn't know I had lost and gave up. I was preparing to make the next ladder and think about a replacement and then noticed the offending ladder stuck to the cutting board - which had been searched with a flash light multiple times. So got a few ladders installed, made the PE breakwater, started tidying up the paintwork on the six inch guns and trying to figure out the order of work for the next few parts. Most of the PE is on except for railings but there are a lot of small parts like lockers still to fit.

    Hi Craig The ginger beer is the stuff out mums made back in the sixties but scaled up to an adult alcohol content. It's a very easy recipe (basically sugar,dried ginger and lemon juice plus yeast) and it is very refreshing at the end of a Florida summer day. I like the 1/700 scale ships and 1/72 AFVs. it definitely helps with the display problem, I think it pushes my space crisis back about another fifteen models. I'm not sure I'll ever got to the 1/350 ship kits I've got especially if Flyhawk keep putting out interesting new offerings. Your resin upgrades show me that there are other elements to explore beyond PE. Alan

    I made a little progress today. I cut off the plastic gun barrels and added the brass ones. I deliberated over whether to bother; the original plastic looks quite reasonable but the brass is a little finer and does have a hollow muzzle. Then I moved onto adding the PE detail to the turret. There are some very fine grab handles and some equipment brackets which were easy to work with in spite of their size. The turret is now going to require delicate handling Next will be masking the axles and spraying primer onto the hull, turret, track and wheels. Thanks for looking Alan

    Thanks OC. It sounds like I've found the right crowd. I really enjoy cooking - and eating the results. I cook a lot of Indian dishes'I'm a big fan of Madhur Jaffrey. I brew my own beer And I even do a bit of baking Its great to have found such helpful and fun people. Alan

    Thanks Patrick Some additional information on the Panzer 1 would be great. I have found photos of an Aust F in Belgrade and Russia and what I have read suggests that although the Panzer 1was widely used the Aust F was produced in limited quantities and was mainly a training vehicle.     Today I masked the white sections of the superstructure pieces and the main guns. Masking the forward funnel which has a lot of PE on it was a bit of a nightmare but I thought I had come up with a clever solution using a piece of thin card loosely taped over the delicate areas. I was so caught up in the effort that I forgot to take photos but it wasn't my best effort anyway. I then sprayed the parts up with the brown coat and when it came time to airbrush the forward funnel the card mask blew off on one side, taking one of the work platforms with it. I managed to reattach it and pressed on. I removed the all masks once the paint dried and it generally looks reasonable although some minor touch up will be needed on the guns. The forward funnel wasn't the disaster I was expecting and I think it can be rescued with a bit of careful brushwork. I added the superstructure to the hull; the guns are just placed for the look of it. I did manage to jockey the work platform back into place and figured that getting it back on (and finding it in the first place) had used up quite enough luck for one session. I experimented with artists oils to try to weather the wooden decks with some advice from Craig. I found a very light touch is needed and there is no second chance. I plan to err on the side of light weathering for a first attempt, mainly on the foredeck. . Thanks for looking and have a great weekend everyone Alan

    Thanks for the kind comment Craig The camouflage scheme looked very daunting but working it in sections has made it manageable. I have become a big fan of Flyhawk, especially as they have some interesting and unusual subjects. I have some Trumpeter and IBG kits waiting along with some add on PE to improve them. They will be a learning experience too
