Fernando E reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
I have also started making own wooden blocks, so far only larger sizes, the smaller ones I will probably use from a CNC machine.
And now I am going to make them such way from this wreck pattern:
So enjoy the pics from progress and have a great Christmas time.
Kind regards,
Doris

Fernando E reacted to JamesBhm in HM Cutter Mermaid 1817 by JamesBhm - Modellers Shipyard - Scale 1:48 - first build
Whew. I'm coming off of several months of long work hours, a bathroom remodel, and other house projects. I've got a little holiday time off and I'm hoping to regain some lost momentum on the build. I started with a good cleaning of my work area and the boat (which I foolishly left uncovered during the remodel....coated in dust!). I had last been working on deck furniture and had a decent binnacle and skylight. I've been looking back at a sketch I had made (and have repeatedly modified) of other adjustments I was thinking of making to the deck layout. The main ones are:
1. A grating for the main hatchway
2. Two scratch-built or kitbashed whaleboats, consistent with King's journals
3. A kitbashed windlass that is a bit smaller than the one in the kit
4. Slight repositioning of the forward hatch
5. Slightly lower profile main companionway
I just need to pick one to start puttering with it. I might start with the companionway. I'm off to look at some gallery images for inspiration.

Thanks a lot!
Only small progress. I have added tackle of jib halyard and jib downhaul. I thought I make it more interesting and Mark the running of the rope in the photo. Let me know if you find it interesting, I could do other ropes too. It is getting pretty crowded around the mast (I like that)
Jib halyard = blue
It goes from the eye on the deck next to the mast up to the mast head through 3 blocks back down to the bitt on the deck. There is the tackle coming from the eye on the deck.
Jib downhaul = Red
Goes from top of the stem through the block on the Block attached to the jib halyard to the the deck.

Excited about the sail I have sat down and finished one side of ratlines. It turned out quite well I would say. The second side next!

I have reached the stage that I do not like so there is not much to show.
Before I can fix the position of the spreadsail yard I need to prepare 2 things.
1. I need to do the top half of ratlines until I still can lower the yard. It will be lot more complicated with the yard fixed in position. (I hate doing ratlines!)
2. I need to prepare topsail so I could secure all the rigging in the center of the deck by the mast (it would be also very dificult to get there once lower ratlines and "outside running rigging" is in place). And I'm also not a fan of this task
So the progress is very slow now. I have installed lower and upper Sheer battens and prepared few ratlines, that is all for now.

@Mirabell61thanks a lot Nils!
Although I have studied the rigging plans of this kit for a long time, it still suprises me how detailed it is! And in 1/72 scale!
So fore sail is prepared, I have attached all the ropes and blocks......
And start testing on the ship
Foresail halyard
Foresail sheet attached to the horse
Foresail downhaul and tack
There is really everything!

Fernando E reacted to crayfish in Another Norwegian Joining
Hi all,
I have just been accepted as a member to your great forum so I recon it is just for me to introduce myself.
I am male, Norwegian, living in Norway, a few miles south of Oslo. I am almost 78 years young and i am very fasinated by scale models, expecially 17. century warships.Have been from when I was a teenager. Merchant ships from this era is also of interest.
I joind the merchant navy at the age of 15 and spent 7 years at sea both cargo and tankships.
I met a Welch barrel of gunpowder, measuring 4ft 11in on a good day and got married and settled down in England at the age of 20. Sadly I lost her 14 years ago. However, life goes on.
I am currently working on a Norwegian 36 gun fregatt from 1826 called "Freia" 1/4"-1 ft. She is build nr.1 at Horten naval yard and took 3 years to compleet her. She was broke up in 1874.
She newer entered battle in her liftime.
I started the build back in 1985 and have just finished the hull and mounting the guns on the top deck. The hull is "plank on frame" and covered with copper below the waterline. This alone took allmost a year. So now all that is left is all the rigging, but I must admit that I feel as if I am running out of time. My eyesight is still intact and I still havent got the shakes but then "how long is Adam in paradise"?.
This is not my first model , but my third. The first one was of Belgian trainingship, the L,avenir, a four masted barque (drawings from H.A. Underhill, the best). Sold to Langford silvergalleries in 1977. Followed up with a model of a french 44 gun frgatt, "Endymion" or of that class, they had several of them.
While in the merchant navy I made several ships in bottles during the long spells we had at sea. The lads emptied the bottles and I put ships in them. Haig Dimple was the favorite and I made loads of them but I never kept any for myself.
Thats it for now and I feel now that you all know more about me than I do myself.
Cheers, Kai

Adding some more tackles, hooks and blocks.
And works on the sails. I have removed the boltrope and did some ironing.
Now its time to attach the boltrope back using my own rope. After 2 and half hour with a needel........ I have the smallest one ready 💣

All the rigging of the main sail is in place so I could tighten it and clean the deck from the rope ends.
And move to the next stage. I have attached all necessary ropes and blocks to the spreadsail yard
And attached it to the jackstay
It brings some volume to the ship!
But first I will have to do all the rigging around centerline (mast and stays) as all the yards rigging is making access very dificult.

Fernando E got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Cutty Sark by Arctic37 - FINISHED - Revell - Scale 1:96 - PLASTIC
Hello Attila
I had a Revell kit of the Cutty Sark I started back in the early 80's but never finished as life got in the way (marriage, three daughters two dogs and goldfish!!!). After moving house three times I unfortunately mislaid/lost the kit and never saw it finished.
I'll be watching with interest how your build progresses.
Cheers............Fernando

I have the case just about finished. I assembled the panels then attached the back to the two sides.
I put some 1/4" square pieces on the base board to hold the cover in place then removed the plastic and cleaned the inside surfaces of all the Plexiglas. I then attached the front to the two sides, then the top to all the sides.
I need to attach the cradle to the base board and it will be ready to put the model in.

Cleaning up the mess. Main back stays are in place and now starting with shrouds.

All ropes for main sail are in place (what a mess)
Now I could secure the mast in position and slowly start to solving that "hairy" puzzle. I must say it is a Joy to go through all the tackles!

I have been working on the case all week, since buying the wood last weekend. The base board is an edge glued pine board that I bought at Lowes. I used a small round over bit in the router to round over the top edges. The cover will be made from 5 panels of plexiglas framed in 3/4" by 1/2" poplar frames. I bought a few 1x2 poplar boards and ripped them down to 1/2" on the big table saw. I used a dado blade on the the saw to cut lap joints into the ends of each frame. I made a mortice jig for the router and used it to cut the slot down the center of one side of each frame piece for the plexiglas to fit in. To avoid splitting where the cut goes into the lap joints, I only cut to about 1/4" from the lap joints. I then used the mill with the same router bit to finish the cuts on each end. I bought a sheet of plexiglas at Lowes that I cut into the panel pieces on the big table saw using a saw blade for plywood. I am now in the process of sanding the frame pieces. Here are the some of the frame pieces on the base board.

@ccoyle thank you!
Sail is finished so I could attach it to gaff and mast and test-fit it on the deck
