Hi Dave! I was NC recently visiting my family, and made the “ mistake “ of visiting a great little model shop in Hendersonville- resulting in extra luggage on the way home in the form of Bluenose by Model Shipways! I’ve read your terrific build log, and noted your reference to Bob Hunt’s “ practicum ” but can’t seem to track it down. Is there any help you can give me as to how to get it? Hope you don’t mind the question! im currently starting on the rigging of HMS Speedy by Vanguard Models, so it will be a while before I open the box, but I would enjoy reading the Bluenose practicum…. Best wishes from Gloucestershire, Spring is trying to show its face! John

Talk about using up all your 9 lives in one go! Thanks Ron, definitely feel encouraged, fascinated to see how you get on. I'm still mulling it over, but will probably do the “do over”, it’s just a matter of summoning up the motivation! And the dog Ruby can’t get on the table😀😀 -

This morning I accidentally caught the top mast, and almost snapped it. It’s weakened at the point where the 1mm hole is and is never going to hold when I complete the rigging process! when I stopped sobbing and started to think of my options, which are these I think- splint ? some kind of support fabric? re- do the top mast section, which could cause more damage in the process ( and having seen Glenn-UK’s post on HMS Sphinx I realise that the smart way is not to assemble the top mast at this stage!) if anyone out there has advice,I would love to hear from you. Couple of pics. attached, please don’t judge to harshly, I know I’m in the company of experts, but I only have my dining room table! thanks I hope john -
Ha ha, nice to hear that! I’m already getting loads of help and advice, just wishes I’d found this forum earlier! cheers John

Thanks Adrian Im just waiting for a few extras to arrive from Jotika and the book and I’ll make a start. I’ve got a feeling that my efforts are going to be pretty amateurish, but looking forward? to giving it a go! one of the biggest problems I had with the stays was keeping the tension so if the book has any tips on that I might re-do them cheers John

Hi Everyone This is my first model of this type and having only just found this great site and wish id done so earlier! I’m at the rigging stage of building HMS Mars, I’ve done the stays and rat lines, ( even found how to do the mouse!) but if anyone can point me towards pics of the yard rigging stages onwards that would be great. The plans are pretty good, but seeing it is so much more helpful, as the nearer the end I get, either I’m getting denser, or its getting more complicated! Right now I’m not sure if I never want to see another model again, or jump straight back in and try not to repeat some of the schoolboy errors I made, there has been more than one occasion when I have sat starting blankly at a mini fail, only to realize that mistakes you make wait a while before they come back to bite you! Any help would be very much appreciated. thanks John

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
