  1. Nick, well I bought so many models recently that I don't see getting back to that one soon, but maybe some day. I have the 1/200 Trumpeter Titanic with all the detail sets waiting to be built. When I get around to that one I will try to give it my best effort to have a nice and accurate Titanic model. I'm not planning on building that one in the near future though as it looks like a very long build that I would really want to improve my skills to take on.
  2. Hi, thank you. As that was my first attempt at building a complete model in decades I looked at it as more of a learning experience than anything else. I wanted to see if I could figure out how to do things such as photo etch, clean painting etc. In that respect it was a success as I made a lot of mistakes but did learn from them for future projects. As far as the rigging goes I have since learned to read the instructions to the end before starting the model. As I went along with the build the instructions would tell you where to place the rigging in the pre drilled holes for later attachment. When I had the whole model just about complete I began rigging it. I did not recall anywhere in the instructions where it told you to either drill a hole for, or to anchor a wire to get up to the lines between the masts. At that point everything was complete except rigging and I didn't feel I could cleanly attach a wire going up from the deck without damaging the surrounding area, or just making a messy glob of glue to attach it. So I just left it out. I also did not put decals on the ship as I din't know they were supposed to be affixed on a gloss surface. I wanted the ship painted flat which is what I did only later to find out that was going to be an issue with decals. So that was another lesson learned. I also couldn't figure out how to mask the gold sheer stripe as it was I believe supposed to be 3/64 wide and the entire length sat over raised rivets on the hull. Now that I have a few more models under my belt I would know how to approach all of those issues. As far as the decks lining up on the Minicraft I believe the round molded on locating tabs on the hull place the bottom deck in the wrong spot. I wound up grinding them off and dry fitting the deck where I thought it should go to have everything line up. I then glued on cut down toothpicks to serve as a stop for the decks so I would know where they needed to go when I permanently glued them down. I also had to file the channels that the deck fits in on the promenade walls wider and cut back the wood decking from the edge to get the wood decks to fit. All in all there are a bunch of errors on that model but it did serve it's purpose in that I learned what not to do in the future with certain things lol!
  3. Thank You. The model doesn't come with the platform on the forecastle so I added it. I finished most of the stairs and am doing all the railings I won't be able to get to once the lifeboat davits are installed and in my way. I also glued on the bridge area and props. I think I'm going to do the lifeboat davits next. I have PE parts for them so it should take awhile.
  4. Yes, a few of the ships I have met bad endings! Well I have the 1/350 Lusitania which is a really nice model but is on hold for parts I'm waiting for. I have a 1/350 resin Normandie which I paid a ton of money for but am disappointed with it's quality...and then the Trumpeter Titanic in 1/200. I also bought a 1/450 QE2 which looks kind of interesting, and a 1/400 Queen Mary 2 Platinum Edition. The Queen Mary 2 is quite large and with the wood decks and photo etch looks like it might be almost as big a challenge as the 1/200 Titanic. The QM2 is sort of a hybrid ocean liner/cruise ship which is stretching my area of interest a bit but it is available. I have no love for cruise ships personally. I didn't want to go down to 1/600 because I didn't think I could get much detail with the molded on parts but it has surprisingly been fun so far. My eyes aren't that great anymore at 57 which also made me shy away from 1/600. Since I started building this Queen Elizabeth I have bought more in this scale. A Mauritania, a Queen Mary (1/570), and am trying to get a 1/600 QE2 and a France. The France is quite rare and expensive. So I have pretty much scoured ocean liner models and have or am trying to acquire most of what's out there. I really don't understand why they are so unpopular as compared to warships....too bad. I would have to say my favorite scale so far in my limited time since taking up this hobby is 1/350. Unfortunately that is a barren desert scale for ocean liners with only Titanic and Lusitania ever being made in plastic as far as I know. Scratch building an entire ship is way beyond my capabilities at this time but I would love to be able to do that. I have scratch built some parts so far but I can't imagine how I would go about doing a hull as I don't think I have much skill in wood working other than using the router to make the display bases lol. At least I have enough to keep me busy for awhile in the subject matter I enjoy.
  5. I have one that I recently finished of a Minicraft Titanic. That was my first attempt at a start to finish build. I have a 1/200 Trumpeter Titanic in its box with the detail kits but I am putting that one off for awhile until I can get a few more models under my belt. I am kind of Titaniced out lol. Unfortunately Titanic models are everywhere and the other liners are few and far between.
  6. I do like battleships but since I was a child I have always had a fascination and like for the old ocean liners. They are my preference in models at this point.
  7. Thanks for all the warm welcomes. I have actually put two build logs on the forum since joining. Thank you all again.
  8. Thanks. The sad part is you can see it with a close up photo but when you're looking at the model in person you don't notice most of it lol.
  9. I have a 1/350 Lusitania on hold waiting for parts so I decided to try out a 1/600 scale ship. I didn't think I would enjoy the smaller size but it's growing on me. I just added some PE and decals to the decks tonight. I am going to finish up all the inclined ladders/stairs with PE and add PE railings . I started gluing on a few decks and am test fitting on the superstructure. I used some left over 1/350 PE grills for the vents and printed up some basic window decals. I masked and painted the bridge windows and then decided decals were much easier and look about the same.
  10. Thanks. The many mistakes I made actually taught me a lot of what not to do lol. If I can get my basic skills up I would like to figure out how to weather and stuff like that to make the models look more realistic. I am working on doing a few more before I try any of that. I see a lot of model builds online that simply amaze me and I'm hoping to get better at it. I bought a whole bunch of tools, supplies, and quite a few models so I am really kind of hooked on this hobby. I enjoy it, and I enjoy the community and learning new ways to do things by looking at others builds.
  11. Thank You for the welcome. I just did post a build of my first ship, a Titanic. Being that I didn't build the Missouri from start to finish myself I feel it's kind of false to post it as my build. Anyway, with that disclaimer here are a few pics. Thanks again.
  12. This is my first complete build of a model in about 40 years. I have looked at it as a learning process. There are many inaccuracies and novice errors but it has taught me a lot. Once I found that I enjoyed doing this I saw this as a way to work on improving my skills. I realize Titanic models are everywhere but it was the easiest to purchase for a first attempt, and I am an ocean liner fan. I used a Scaledecks wood deck, various photo etch sets, and brass masts from Master Model. I'm not quite sure if I am posting this in the correct spot as this is my first post. I just recently completed this so perhaps it should go in a section for completed models? Being that the photos are throughout the building process I thought it might be better here. Thanks for looking.
  13. Hi, thanks for letting me join your group. I hadn't built a model since I was a kid which is many decades ago. Due to the current situation I found myself with lots of indoor time on my hands. A friend had given me a half complete 1/350 Missouri when he moved away so I decided I would finish it. I did and found I really enjoyed the work. So I purchased a few more plastic ship models and now I'm hooked. Thanks again, Chris.
