The building board for my model is finished. I use a design really similiar to that what Ed has shown in chapter 4 of his HMS Naiad build log.

For my building board I used 12mm birch plywood. The base board has a size of 120 x 50 cm. For the supporting bars I've chosen a height of 10 cm.

On the baseboard I screwed 4 boards from 6mm birch plywood to fix two aluminum rails because I don't have a mill to cut the gap for these. For the centerline I inked one longitudinal edge of the middle plates with black acrylic paint. After brushing the surface with white acrylic paint the center line was made visible with a scalpel blade that was dragged along the edge.

I've added the lower deck clamps, more of the ceiling planking, and begun treenailing.  I put some mineral spirits on to get some sense what they would look like with finish. I'm very impressed with the Jim Byrnes drawplate.  I was able to make .018" treenails (just over 3/4" scale) - second smallest hole on the drawplate.  Much happier with the effect here than on my prior models.

Hope everyone has a great new year.

I finished the treenails on the partially planked side.  The other side has all the ceiling planks, so will take longer.  I'm hoping to finish the treenails on that side before heading back to work on Monday, when the model will resume its glacial progress.  I also milled stock for the mast step and well.  I bought a 6' boxwood 2x4 from Gilmer wood 8 years ago, and just cut into the last 2' length.

Greg – thanks!  I am using yours as a guide, and will aim for something similar in terms of half fully finished and half frame exposed. It will be a mirror image and include one gun.

Druxey – you are as always incredibly kind.  I took the picture at an angle that hid the uncorrectable low spots.  As they aren’t near the ends or gunport, the planking should effectively hide them.  There are also a few frames that are misaligned vertically, also not visible at an angle.  I kept knocking them loose when fairing, and after regluing the same frames multiple times, they migrated.  Again, mostly on one side, and soon to be hidden forever.

I’ve been having a good week off from work.  My kids are home, but sleep until late, so I have had workshop time to begin planking.  I’m going to work my way up to the lower deck clamps, then stop and treenail.  I made 7/8” boxwood treenails.  I’m hoping the end grain gives enough contrast that they are visible against the boxwood planks without having the measles effect I have had on prior models.  On the Rattlesnake I used cherry, which was too visible, and on Hannah I used boxwood, but was using cheap drill bits that left a burn mark at the edge of the hole, and was using an old drawplate that only got me down to about 1 ¼”.  I got a Byrnes drawplate and am able to go smaller, and got better drill bits and lower speed drill, so now get clean holes.  It looked OK on the test piece.

Best wishes for the new year,

    Dave

Even though it has been 2 years, 9 months, and 29 days since the last post, work didn’t actually stop.  The framing is finished.! One side looks OK to leave uncovered, and the other is begging to be planked (meaning I can’t true some of the frames without either completely disassembling and replacing them, or thinning the others too much).  Planking one side was the original plan, and the bad areas will get covered, so this is OK.

    Few things of note:
Future builders should be comfortable that the project is doable even if you only have around 90 minutes per week to work on it. It was a fun project to do a little bit at a time. The time limitations were responsible for the problems on one side.  At some point ‘perfect’ became the enemy of ‘good enough’, and I stopped doing redo’s.  It was too disheartening to go long periods of time with no apparent progress. I think I have defined some sort of record for how slow progress on a ship model can go without actually stopping. I plan to fit it out, and hope to have more time to work on it over the holidays.  David and Greg sent me a copy of their instructions, which are super.  The framing was all new to me while most of the rest is similar to things I've done before.

    Happy holidays!

    Mike, you don't missinterpret AotS.

If I look on your last picture (plan copy) I think that the replica will be build as French ships would built. The deadwood and the only use of double frames looks like it was drawn in the book "The 74gun ship" by Boudriot. As fas as I know -but in the forum are a lot of people which have more experience with American ship building- it is common that American ship would built in French and English tradition.

A bit of an update.  First off, here's hull "right-side up".... I'm liking the way she looks.

I removed some of the build board material around the transom area to give me some working room. If you'll go back to previous pictures, the transom is actually glued to the build board.   When I removed the board, I found some problems with the transom.  Not a show stopper or a big problem.   Some fairing/sanding and maybe removal/replacement of some of the small framing will fix it nicely.  Once fixed, I can continue on with the planking and build up of the transom.

I also finally took a good look at the interior.  I held off sanding and fairing it because I knew my planking clamps were going to cause <ahem> issues, shall we say.   Now is also the time to fair it out and fix any problems.  I'm not seeing any serious problems, just a lot of sanding and fairing.  So this area, along with the transom is being attended to.  I also wanted to get this out of the way at this point as when I install the galleries, stern windows, etc. removing the sanding dust would be a real problem if I waited to sand until they were done.  Another reason is, I don't want to damage anything with the handling needed during sanding.

I have to admit I'm pretty damn happy right now.  The problems are not as bad as I thought they'd be and overall, looking pretty good.

Today I've finished the drawing work for the frames. 55 frames and 26 cant frames are a lot stuff, which I have to build now.

The following picture shows frame 10a for example.

Now I have to clean up my work room and prepare the building board. I hope I've nothing forgotten so that I can make sawdust and start the build of my model

Today it rained all day, so I had enough time to finish the design of the cant frames

The Bollard Timbers and Hawse Pieces are missing to complete the planning of  framework.
The individual components and the frames I'll draw later during the build.

Next, the construction of the two-stage slipway is on the ToDo list, then I can lay down the keel for the model.

Looks like you had a good start building your model after the long period of planning - it's exactly the same stage I am in the moment.
I wish you a lot of patience and success for your build.

Be careful with black paper. I've the exerience that the gluing is not stable. The problem is that paper has different layers and the wood glue will not go through all. I prefer black pulp, which I found in an hobby store. It has only one layer.

    Alan,

it's holiday time and I used it to reread your log. Your journey for reengineering the 74 gun ship is excellent. I like especially your 3D skills, which I don't have in the moment. It makes it much easier to check your reconstruction and avoid mistakes.

I hope that you can make sawdust in the near future.

Mark, right, will create a topic there. It is probably interesting not only for the readers of that log..

One of the youtubes mentions the construction of the transom:

Apparently, the ship's builders were very annoyed by the complexity of it. And said something like "promise this is the last time you draft such fashionpieces"
Seems like you can't go with our "make an oversized detail and fair it to shape" approach when you build a real ship..

Other photos are without comments, just a bulk of what I managed to record while being in the hull. I was only allowed into the hull for 5min, so was shooting photos all around, just in case

Also, if you are interested - do not miss the youtubes by the builders of the replica. They are in russian, but nevermind the narrative.
