So while waiting for the new planking to arrive I set to work with some of the  deck furniture subassemblies

The skylight is a kit provided piece...it's made of some kind of coated card, set up like a sheet metal fold out
had to lightly score the fold lines and add glue

turned out fairly nice...if you forgive the color, maybe it's meant to match the orange wood strips

From there I moved on to the main deck house, more a covered access hatch really...it's a mix of wood parts and card, again all kit parts(except the trim)
added temporary glue blocks till all 4 sides were set up

    Then popped them out
The roof is an angled piece of reinforced card...I soaked it and camped it to a roll of tape to get the correct curvature
and started to add some strips to simulate trim
Here she is with all the trim completed and with the access hatch set in place...the hatch still needs a little more refining before it secured to the roof

Well that's it for today...still have the capstan, anchors, and ships boat to work on...the planking has shipped, hope it's here soon
Thanks for stopping by and for the likes and comments

Understood, actually the only areas that would patina are those exposed to the air, right at the waterline, most likely the rest would stay a deep copper color...think old penny.

I can see why...prices on basswood are a bit nuts for what it is, looked at lime as well but the shipping was more then the material.  Ya it might be I'm gonna try to use the decking material and possibly the inner bulwark, so it should not be a total loss

Billing Boats sells it......they used to supply basswood planking in their kits.   they started substituting Obechi some time ago.   it'a a rough wood,  not very dense........when wet it does have some flexibility.  it does sand fairly well....doesn't give the hairy appearance that basswood sometimes gives.......I'd have to rub the hull down with a soft cloth to remove it,  then a fine paper sanding after that.   I also have some thin strip called annegre......it's something like mahogany,  but it's not as brittle.  I keep a fair stock of both in various widths.   I would say that if you were building a larger hull,   this stuff could be put to good use {could be used without milling it},  but for small models,  it's just plain too large.  it would clinker all over the place!  the amount of supplied wood in a kit is usually matched to the surface area that it is to cover.......this stuff I highly doubt it.  that orange stuff is interesting though.......I love to plank a deck with it,  or wall up a structure

Seems to be a lot of options available from what I've seen, so are you gonna copper the bottom?  I gonna do white stuff, still haven't recovered from coppering the Harriet Lane

Interesting...you could rig her this way...do you know if they were pole or stepped masts?

well then.......I'm just in time.   no bin for that momma sun........we're build'in them.....I don't care what scow we come up with.  {the viking funeral in the end will be fantastic      }.  too bad you ordered wood......I could have sent you some Obechi.  since I posted the pictures on my log,  I figured it would be good to post them here too.  this is the Clotilda,  but I think that the layout will do well for this ship too.  note that there is no tiller, but a ship's wheel,  and that it utilized a windlass.  other striking features can be  seen.

the stern bulwarks do sweep upward slightly.......interesting aspect to include........and check out the waterline.   I've never done copper,  so it's either bite the bullet or paint {lots of patina}.  they sailed into a secluded cove near three mile Island and off loaded the slaves onto a river boat,  which took them inland to a holding facility.  there they would be sold and divvied up later on.  the Clotilda was then sailed to a more secluded spot,  where it was set afire to get rid of the evidence.

they were transported naked and shackled to the deck.  after the war and they were free,  they settled in the very spot where they toiled.  they called their settlement,  Africatown.   the article is very good reference.
they went through a lot to get what they { you might as well say } worked for.   the remnants of Africatown can still be seen......only a few of the original ramshackle huts remain......time and progress took the rest.

now that I have the magazine with the article I read,  I promised I'd post the pictures.   it's of the Clotilda,  but I think this model can be outfitted like this and not be wrong.   I rather like the layout.

when the Clotilda entered and docked in a cove near three mile Island,  the slaves were off loaded onto a river boat,  which took them inland to a holding facility to be sold and divvied up later.  the Clotilda was then sailed to a more secluded spot and set afire,  to get rid of the evidence.

they were relieved of their clothes as you can see,  and shackled to the deck.   after the war and they were free,  they went on to settle in the place that they toiled.   they called it Africatown.

I would say stepped.  the Clotilda was a schooner,  so looking up a rigging diagram should reveal the rest.   the model is set up like a brig.......since the kits supplies tops and adequate yards to outfit her as such.  unless you looked up one of the ships named in the Wiki,  you could find out how other ships were rigged.   2 section masts,  fore and main........if desired,  one square sheet can be added to the fore mast,  I'd go no more.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the wood offer...I'm gonna replace all the kit planking, all to dry and brittle to work with and more trouble then its worth. then again it is a 50 some year old kit...so I guess it should be expected.   What is Obechi, don't think I've ever seen any

Well this turned into a fiasco, this stuff won't cut correctly for anything ...there is such a difference between the hard and soft sections that even with a fence its impossible to get an even cut the stuff just wanders everywhere.   May just split some basswood down and plank with that, really wanted to make use of the kit materials though, but it seems they may be too old to be salvageable.    Stopping for the day...else Jumbo could end up in the bin

I took the booklet pic you posted and expanded it...it does clarify some but adds some confusion too!  Counts provided are whats in mine

    According to the booklet:
    2x6mm is decking
#15 is the cap rail, 2x8mm, 2 count
#16 to plank the entire hull, assuming this is the orange stuff as booklet states it's 1x10mm, 25 count
#17 between the ribs as the inner bulwark, none found

    According to the inventory sheets:
#20 planking above the waterline, 2x10mm 13 count
#21 between the ribs as the inner bulwark, 2x10mm I've a four count of these

there are also 4 2x10mm strips half the length of all the others, no clue what these are for

The instructions (??) say to, I paraphrase here, to plank the entire hull top to bottom with 1x10mm (this would be the orange stuff) and fill the hull.

No mention of any other planking on the hull....it does allude to another layer by stating to fill with wood paste to eliminate the difference between the planking #16 and the basic planking.  This combined with the inventory sheet call out, #20 planking above the waterline, leads me to believe its only the top half is double planked, more weirdness

I think I'm gonna move forward by planking the entire hull with orange stuff after narrowing it down to 5mm, should be just enough, then punt from there.

I must admit that I am still a little surprised at seeing the Iron Cross on a B-17, but the faded OD combined with the bright yellow is a killer combination and your ability to reproduce them amazing. Keep it up, it is getting better and better!

I'll have to look and see if I have any of that hard stuff your talking about.......here's a breakdown of what I see:
1-#15   that looks to be the cap rail........they should have been told that there are two sides to a boat,  and it doesn't have to be 2 mm thick
4-#21   apparently,  these are to cover the inner bulwarks.   nice thought,  but I don't think I'll be doing that.  I'll see what the inner bulwarks look like and go from there.  says nothing about pin rails either.
13-1.8 X 6 mm strip  this I believe is for above the waterline.  the hull is to be double planked.  there is no suggestion of what to use below the waterline
25- 1 X 10 mm strip  this looks like it's to be the second planking...it can't be used as deck planking,  it's too wide.  this is the orange stuff.....it must be pine.....if you look close,  you can see crystallized pitch on the surface.
16- ? X 10 mm strip  this sadly is a jumble of 1.8 and 2 mm wood strips.  it was taped together.   it's badly warped........I'll use it somewhere,  but not here.  chances are,  this is the stuff your talking about......I have no idea what the wood is.  pretty dense....I'll grant cha that

makes no sense to plank the hull with 2 different woods,  especially if they are different thicknesses.  I will post a picture of the Clotilda tomorrow.......it had a coppered hull.  chances are,  if this was an American or British ship, it may have been coppered too.  I like your thoughts on the deck structures.......when you see the picture,  you'll have a better idea
