Hey Kenny ..Following your and Chuck's 3 d discussion.. I am too old and ignorant to do that stuff, but the dream would be to scratch build some thing with Ancre ,Taubman or what ever plans, then get the 3d carvings in that scale stateside ..also figures for my (formerly yours!) Winnie and Confederacy in resin..

I mill up a lot of wood strips ,lumber, etc during the summer in NY. that I think I will need ,then ship it to our place in south FL..one thing I had to deal with was mold here in FL, when stored in my shipshed..Now I store my wood loose in long ,clear totes with a bag or two of Damprid... Eliminated the mold problem , even after six months of humid Fl weather.

If you do any scratchbuilding, IMHO, the thickness sander is essential.. I have the saw, but also use a small benchtop bandsaw with a fence and Saker thin strip cutting jig..saves on the Byrnes saw.. another alternative is an old Dunlap cast iron table saw..slightly larger than a Byrnes..cheap , but heavy to ship..works great

deck planking options

I have some rock maple that I cut from old mitre boxes, milled it for the deck planking with the Byrnes saw and thickness sander..looks pretty good..did you use rock (hard) maple? I have too many options at this point, but narrowing it to maple or boxwood for Winchelsea decking. -

Thanks for the heads up..I thought you were doing this on your own..I would like some 3d figures for my Confederacy and others I have built.. I don't have a laser and am too tech ignorant to use one.. any suggestions for 1/64, 1/96 etc, 3d figures available in US? Thanks! Manning 16

Wow! I see a cottage industry here! I'd buy some 1/64 figures for my Confederacy.

Yes, I feel your pain...in 1970's , my first model was MS Swift..no internet or anyone to teach me..promptly took off tip of my finger with an exacto knife.. I'm 77 now and still modeling..the transition from plastic to wood is huge. There are many great forums out there..walk away from it,do some research , watch some videos and read some planking books You'll be fine..research is a big part of this hobby spent three days researching how to properly rig the capstan..I thought a messenger was someone who delivered a message..well not on a ship ..for me, planking is still a challenge..some people make it look easy..it's math and Mcgivering.. I still have the Swift and look at her as a learning curve.. I now scratchbuild Admiralty board models.. so don't give up.. !!

Decoration for 3D Victory printing
manning16 replied to GustavG's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
Absolutely stunning..the one thing that prevents more scratchbuilding,as for me,, is the carving..you should offer model and scale specific carvings!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
