OK so I'm working from home today and I thought I'd take a break and load some photos. Lots to do for work so I'll make it quick....

First we have the bowsprit standing rigging - shrouds and bobstays. Goodwin shows one, but Lees says that 2 were carried after 1719, so I went with Lees...

So for some reason I'm not able to upload more photos than this in this post....not sure what's going on - I'll try to continue in another....

    OK let's try again.....

Next after fiddling with the lengths of the lower masts, here is what I arrived at....

These are just the raw dowels set in the mast holes - the rake in the mizzen isn't accurate and the rake in the foremast shouldn't be there at all. Anyway, this is just to demonstrate relative size...

Here are the foremast cheeks and bibbs which I made as 1 piece instead of separately, thinking that to make separate parts at this scale would simply be too tough.

Here is the foremast top, unfinished. Corel's laser cut part was accurate with respect to dimensions, except the thickness (1.5mm) which would have made the top much too bulky after adding the planking and the margins. So I traced the laser cut part onto a 1/32 thick sheet of lime and planked it using .5mm x 3mm strips. The margins are also 1/32"lime.

It looks a little mongrelly here, but after painting it's much better (sorry for the bad focus!)

Finally here are a couple of the shots of the fore mast dry fitted. It's not exactly finished yet - I still have to paint the bolsters and the mast head cleats and also reduce the latter's size so they don't look so bulky....

You may notice the holes drilled in the forward edge of the top for the crow's feet, which I plan on adding. My worry here is that the smallest blocks I have are 3mm, which even at that small size is too big for the crow's feet tackle. A suitable euphroe I can probably manage, but the tackle blocks will be a challenge. I'm not sure how much I can reduce the size of the 3mm blocks supplied by corel (which at any rate are very fragile things) though I might be able to do something with 1/8" blocks supplied by model shipways and leftover from previous builds (though these are slightly larger than the corel ones!!

Anyway that's a future worry. Hope you're all enjoying the day - now back to work!!

Not much of an update, but its all I have as I haven't had much time to spare recently.  I've been staring at the holes I'd drilled in the cathead pretty much from when they were installed and I just couldn't get comfortable with the way they looked. Reaching a point where I would have no options I decided to try and improve these, took a while to convince myself fully recognizing that a mistake would probably make things a lot worse.  Finally plucked up the courage to tackle them, and by drilling some more holes in between, and using a sharp knife, a very small file and some patience I was able to get proper slots rather than holes.  I then simply cut small slices of dowel for the sheaves.  Far from perfect but I'm much happier with how its looking now.

At last the ship's boats have been completed. Believe me, it was a real challenge.

First of all the boat's resin hulls should have been sanded. Otherwise you can have big problems when glueing the cartridge paper for the ribs into the hull. My big awareness...

But the rest was quite easy.

Well, the lauch is very tall and I'll don't fit it until the rigging has been completed.

Time for bowsprit and mast assembly. I‘ve just finished the bowsprit. For tapering all the masts, yards and booms I‘ll use my Proxxon lathe.

Here are the tapered parts. The two holes in the bowsprit cap have to be drilled in.

And here is the assembled bowsprit with all the fittings. The bowsprit and jib-boom should be stained walnut, but I like this colouring more. Well, it's just a matter of taste.

Only a minor update for today.

I've glued the elm tree pumps into place and fixed the anchor to the anchor cable.

Well, it wasn't even a good idea to paint the casing and the outlet black...

The anchor will be stowed later

And at last a total view as of July 27.

No way! After all the work my Pickle sails with two boats.

I‘ve made a little modification on the fore yard stirrups. They are not made from brass wire but the same black thread I used for the footropes.

The gammoning and the lower mast shrouds (fore mast) are rigged.

Sorry, but I did it again.  I got so wrapped up in the building that I forgot to take pictures.  The hull is finished except for the rub rails, the prop and the rudder.  The paint is a primer, I still need to decide on the color.

Yesterday I found a picture of the Toka YT 149, one of the Woban class, being lifted out of the water which gives me a great shot of the prop and rudder.  Guess that’s next.

    Forecastle deck planking

The deck was planked in the same manner as the gun deck using the maple planking and blackening the sides, I joggled the planks from the position as shown in The anatomy of ships Diana, the effect is much better than just tapering the planking but you do need the waterway to do it, I planked over the cutter-ways in the deck and will add the fittings over them, there are no joints as the plank lengths are to short where there are no fittings.

    First plank down

    A few rows down

    Ratlines between the mizzen shrouds...
    Mouse on the mizzen...

I realized that these small pets had been so familiar to the crew, so friend... all around on board... and had entered into the ship vocabulary...

The hull planking is on and first sanding complete.  Hand sanding to a fine finish will be next.  I left a section of planking off to expose the framing, but I have decided against installing most of the below deck items inside the hull.  I left a little DNA on the keelson after a little slip of a chisel, so there is no denying who built this thing.

I put in a few inside planks for strength and the two mast steps are in place.  The deck frames are started.  There are a few carlings where there are deck structures and to set up the masts' partners.  Once the deck is framed the stanchions and bulwarks will follow.

The deck beams are coming along.  The pattern on the plans is odd in at least one place.  The photo 9-13-13B of the deck beam locations has a black arrow showing  what I mean.  This may be a result of one of the refurbishments made since she was originally launched.  There are also more typical uses of heavy beams, narrow beams, carlings and ledges, lodging knees and hanging knees.  The mast partners are relatively simple designs.  The hanging knees are in fact hanging standards as they fay to the bottom of the beams, not the sides of the beams.

I added a few of the knees where I plan to leave a bit of the deck uncovered.  I am also installing the after cabin bulkheads and deck as I may leave the sliding cover open.  There will also be a ladder going from the weather deck down  to the cabin deck.
