Please could someone have a quiet word with the weather people. I’m ready to sand in preparation for first planking, the only problem it’s below freezing in my garage. 🥶🥶🥶🥶 As soon as fit, onward my friends.

I think also it was a generational aspect as well. For instance, the first time i saw an electronic calculator was in 1975 ( I was 15) so computer games etc were a futuristic dream. Also probably most of us learnt, taught or emulated or fathers / parents in either modelling or general daily DIY projects. If the youngsters of today do not have that modelling / general DIY parent influence, will they ever step into any type of model making hobby?

I will probably be in that situation soon. In my mind some semblance of timber planking ought to be visible. I’ll update you when I get the second planking on.

Just thinking ahead here, the lower part of the hull is to be painted white / off white. Thinking about authenticity a number of completed log pictures I have seen almost eradicate the planking lines of that part of the hull. In reality albeit with no actual pictures etc surely a witness of the planking would be in evidence. Pulling from weathering aircraft and AFV’s, many of the substructures are normally / partially visible. In full size shipbuilding what would the lower plankings be coated in? Probably showing my inexperience here so please correct me.

Thought someone would see that. I was born in the centre of 3 Group operations, my grandfather even supplied bread to a number of airfields. My school was on an airfield perimeter. In Lincolnshire there were something around 42 airfields, all active, so hence bomber county. Also over 55,000 member lost their lives, so to those heroes……

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
