Thank you for your interest in "Newsboy" 1854,

Next step is assembly of mast sections and fitting mast ironwork. Key points include:

    >>> Cross trees & fore top fitted
    >>> Upper masts dry fitted and caps installed
    >>> Mast / cap ironwork, bands, and clevis bands fitted
    >>> Special fittings fabricated (silver soldered) from brass strip, tube, and channel sections
    >>> Mast hoops fabricated from .020" x 1/16" basswood wrapped around larger dowel, cut to length, and glued

With the deck framing complete, next steps include deck planking, waterways, covering boards, deck scuppers, hause & chain pipes. I enjoy this work as it requires some design work to optain the desired effect and with finishing it will start to give the model some color. Key points include:

    >>> Deck planking fitted around hatch/house coamings, anchor windlass support planks, etc,
    >>> Deck planking and margin planks fitted to waterway planks
    >>> Deck planking nibbed into margin planks
    >>> 1/16" x 3/32" deck planking
    >>> Caucking simulated with black non-blead fabric markers (quick pass on one edge only)
    >>> Waterways rise forward as covering board/plankshear have greater shear than deck planking
    >>> Coamings, waterways, covering boards, and anchor windlass support planks left loose (final installation after painting and deck finishing)

It should be noted that this arrangement is typical of vessels build with machine cut planks. Prior to the advent of machine sawed planks, ~1800, deck planking often curved and was nibbed inboard into adjacent planks.

Got some free time to continue nailing. Use handmade blacked brass nails with round head.
I can't make good photos of these nails, its look pretty good in real.

One of the details I wanted to add was a grapnel anchor..
The main problem was how to manufacture these..

An idea came up in my head using a 1,5 mm brass tube and 5 pcs. of 0,4mm wire and I started working on it.
Underneath again a visual sequence of the idea.

Even though the result is not bad, especially after blackening, I wasn't satisfied with the “hooks” and the wire i used, .."peanuts" maybe.., but anyway, I started on version 2.
This time i used a 2mm brass tube and a slightly thicker (0,5 mm) brass wire and also a different hook type.
And by using 2 mm brass tube, I could shape the shaft a bit more, but.., unfortunately it could only contain 4 wires..

It’s still not perfect, but I leave it for now…

This is the final result after some fine-tuning, blackening and a cable attached.

Thank-you everyone for all the comments!

Well, an update is long overdue - I almost feel I should introduce myself again!

I struggled in the summer with which route to take for my cannons. I tried making molds and casting with resin with only limited success. The summer flew by and winter appeared and casting became a problem due to mess and allergies, or at least some reaction to the fumes. Ideally working outside is the best option, but at -20 degrees Celsius, it's not an option!

I had seen some paper cannons that Doris made and I thought I would give that a try. It would be easier if my scale was larger, but I don't find it too difficult. I know they are not perfect, but I am relatively pleased with the outcome and will continue with this process.

I am currently experimenting with weathering the cannons, so the painted one is not necessarily what the finished product will look like.

To keep it simple I would recommend cutting the sprue into small pieces and dilute in liquid cement.  You can adjust the consistency and get it to whatever thickness you want.  Keep it in a small glass jar and it will last forever.

Hello all and hope everyone had a good Xmas.
I finally had some time back on the build and managed to push it along.
Got some fine detail work done, and corrected some errors since finally getting my hands on the original shipwrights drawings from the maritime museum.
The deck is now in place and I'm filling and sanding it all into shape over the next couple of days.
Hopefully I'll get some paint on it before I return to work on Monday.

Cleaned up the deck and set about 'training' the ply to the curves on the hull. I've glued plastic to the back and used the heat gun to hold the shape as near as need be.
It's also had a light sanding ready for any filler and a coat of primer. The colour will be dark green when finished.

Added some more detailing today. Rear raft carriers, antenna bases, some light brackets, front replenishing system derricks.
Pretty much finished the foremast detailing apart from the AJE and bipolar antennae.
I sprayed the mast over the plastic primer I used and it's too dark. It should be a light grey. S***!
I'm going to have to redo it now with a brush when I get the correct colour.
I'm also not sure about the brass parts. I think I'll paint them grey too and accent the fixing points with black.

I'm waiting for Barry (Sirmar) now to send me the fittings kits I've ordered.
This is all the stuff like life rafts, guns, Corvus launchers, radar, the funnel, handrails, fairleads, launches, anchors, capstans, towed sonar etc etc.
    hopefully they'll arrive next week.

Just a quick update. I have removed the remaining bulwark and the planking. I felt it was morally wrong to do this but there were so many bulwark supports broken off that I had to remove the planking so that I can remove the bulkheads to replace the broken bulwark supports.

Its a new year and its time I cracked this build log thingy, so before I start typing the history of this model I want to make sure I can get the pictures uploaded. Well thanks to my son I've been able to get some pictures on the log. The model had been kicking around an outhouse for about 25 years. Some of the fittings were lost but the overall condition leaves a lot of work to be done to restore / replace it to a suitable condition from where I can progress. I think it will be a total strip down because I have no idea what inhabitants have moved in and the last thing I want is to see is a finished model succumbing to parasites. I have followed many of the different builds on this site and I am proud to be a member of it. I felt it was time to contribute my meagre effort and I hope that this log may be of some help to those who feel that a model is not worth completing

Progress on the Connie has been made. I am down to 7 pairs of running lines then I will need to make the coils and install them around the ship. I have completely exhausted the line I received from Mamoli in the sizes required. I have an order on the way from Syren Ship Model Co, (thanks Chuck). As soon as it arrives I will be able to complete the rigging.

I am liking the way the ship is looking. Mamoli's instructions for the rigging has been pretty good. Once I learned how they were denoting everything, it has been pretty smooth. Here are a couple of shots of the ship as it sits on the bench today. I think tomorrow I will start working on the ship's boats since I can't do any more rigging other than installing a few blocks, until I receive the new rope.

A bit more time to work the last week than I expected, so I finished laying the deck planking. Still a few raised edges to sand but basically done.
I'm not into treenailing, so I simulated on each plank before gluing by drilling small holes and filling them with slightly contrasting wood filler. I'll not be staining the deck - probably just a matt clear finish.
Now I'm consulting the plans and will be adding features that affect the hull and the inner bulwarks before beginning on the deck structures.

I got quite a bit accomplished... photo tags help explain

    Problems encountered:
     - When installing the masts I discovered the cross trees on the foremast were not quite horizontal.  I had to saw the trestle tree loose from the cheeks to correct the error.
     - I discovered I attached the cross trees incorrectly and decided to install a third rather than attempt to remove the shorter one and rework the trestle trees
     - The jaws on the main boom were too long and needed to be shortened.
     - I had trouble with applying the name to the hull as my methods were terrible.  My darling wife suggested using our office labeller.  This looks better than what I was trying to do.
     - I had missed installing an eyelet which resulted in my standing rigging (one line) being incorrect.  I love doing things twice!
     - My finger is raw from all the pin vise drilling... the knurl finish on the pin vise is a bad idea.

I have learned I need much more practice with the techniques to get better.
I hope my blocks will be okay but even these will show a lack of skill.
Looking at David Antscherl's block making method in "The Fully Framed Model" would likely have been a better approach.
I'll being working on this to get better.

Meanwhile, my schedule is to be done this week for a Friday delivery.
    Hope I succeed!

Just converted to Firefox to upload drawings. A few pen sketches to explain case construction.

The brass  "L"    3/8" each side by approximately 1/32" thick.

The back and side panels were glued together with aquarium silicone glue, then reinforced by gluing Brass  "L" strips over the joint, hiding the glue joint.

The front panel was finished with the brass  "L" glued to the right and left borders.  The brass L overlaps the side panels but was not glued to them.

The top glass panel has brass  L on all sides which overlaps all the other panels and holds the front panel in place.

When the top panel is lifted at the front, the front panel is free to swing out and be removed, providing easy access to the model.

There are probably hundreds of ways to build a case. This worked for me.  Cheers, Gil

Ribs added using 0.5mm x 1.5mm styrene strips.

An outside plank (styrene) added to support cutting the oar locks.  The upper plank saturated with fast C/A to prevent splitting.

With template for deck planking. Also an inside reinforcement for the base of the oarlocks.

After a little work on the computer, I'll finish the launch.  Thumbnail is the third photo. Cheers, Gil

Now it begins to outline the final form of this corvette, at least on the starboard side: I fixed the piece of plank molded bow, prepared and glued the other strip molded, smaller, which limits the performance of the formwork and I started to cut and trim oarlocks of double coasts
