42rocker reacted to michael mott in Making your own Hobby Wood
One of the dangers of not cutting the wood fairly early is the potential for the log to check often badly. I have found that by cutting the wood into fairly decent sized billets or planks depending on how big the log is is to sticker it and stack it in the open air but sheltered from the weather. even if it is a small log say 2 to 3 inches in diameter, Cutting it up into 12 to 18 inch lengths and then re sawing it into some planks, then using some Popsicle sticks as stickers, and hold the lot together with some bicycle inner-tube rubber bands will help the wood to dry more evenly. It is also good to put paraffin wax on the ends of the boards to slow down the rapid evaporation from the ends.
I have dried Maple, Yew, Apple, cherry, Lilac(absolutely beautiful wood) Willow, Birch Poplar and Spruce. it is fun being able to harvest your own wood

It's nice, it's all there and not a huge life investment. If you have build a kit you might already have most of the equipment. If you need to buy a tool or two, odds are you will use it on the next kit build, if you go back that is.
Ok, kits I like modelshipsways kits, a large step above most of the rest that I've seen. Have not had the pleasure of working with a Blue Jacket kit yet. Still something is not right on most of the kits that's why I'm trying the above HMS Triton.
Good Luck and look for something that will give YOU enjoyment and pleasure not hard times.

42rocker got a reaction from Cap'n Rat Fink in H.M.S. Triton Cross Section 1:24 by Tim
Well I downloaded and printed the pdf and now starting this build thread. I need to review a few things before I go too much farther and get more info.
1st major question is reviewing ratio's and scales and printing. When I see the ratio of 1:48 this means to me, one scale 1/4 inch is equal to 1 foot. Therefore when I print out any plan that has a set of foot measurement like the Triton pdf has on it,
I want to print such that 5 feet on the plans is equal to 1.25 inches. Right??
If I wanted to print the plans in 1:24 then I would want the same 5 feet to measure 2.5 inches. Right?
Someone else is working in 1:36 scale therefore he would have made the 5 feet measure 1.67 inches Right?
I guess that the next thing is to try to obtain the overall measurements off a set of plans. That way one would have an idea of the final size of the project that they would want to finish. Then after review you can pick the scale that you want to work in.
In reviewing the first step pdf looks like the ship area that is being modeled is about 19.7 feet long. That what I got off the pdf.
Therefore in 1:48 looking at something about 4.925 inches long?
in 1:32 about 6.566 inches long
and in 1:24 about 9.85 inches long
That sound about right?
Some help please??

Thanks every one. A little more progress. That dang beam arm is quite the hard thing to make.I think it took me a hole day to make and re-make.It came out ok.I did cut out the pattern and tape it on.
Tomorrow I will work on the carling, hanging knee, and lodging knee.Just listen to me talk. Before yesterday I did not know what these things were.

The details will be what you decide to add. Maybe artillary tools? Barrels? Ciphers on the gun barrels? Etc.? The two most important details aren't ever shown in pictures. One is the fun. The other is the satisfaction, be it the learning curve, the workmanship, or just accomplishing.

Christian, Ron, Rocker and Grant. Thank you all for looking in on my build and your kind words. The idea for the extended keel to screw it down to the build board came from another member here on the forum prior to the "Great Crash". I just borrowed it.

Okay....Okay.....Okay
I'll take some of the blame (I'm used to it)
As far as thinking outside of the box, i'm not....it's just the box that I am in is so big I get lost alot...
"Build it Bigger" Yep.....Eyes are starting to fade quicker than I want....
Seriously, at 1:24 this will be a very interesting build to watch
PS...
Since this will be so big....we expect alot more detail to go into it....Ha!

42rocker reacted to SteveM in Triton Cross Section Timber List
Chad's initial posting on 30 April 2008 regarding woods he planned to purchase appears below. I know he later ordered some wood from Hobby Mill and changed some of his choices, but this is what he started with.
It's been a loooong month since I last posted. First I was derailed by a backyard project and then a sick two-year-old, but today I FINALLY ordered my wood.
After all the distractions, I got down to the business of deciding the What, Where, and What Size of the cross section. I started by figuring that I was going to buy most of my lumber pre-milled, since I have yet to buy a thickness sander and I'm still learning the ropes with my table saw and scroll saw. Next on the agenda was trying to decide what types of wood I'd use. Two things I figured into the equation were 1) I haven't worked with many types of wood outside of the ones that come with kits, so I would like to try diversifying a little, and 2) money wasn't going to be a hinderance. I remember a post somewhere a long time ago that if you divide the price of the supplies over the amount of time it take to finish a project, that the cost tends to be very small- so I'd rather pay a little more for the wood I want since in the end it's probably only pennies difference.
So trying to decide what I wanted to use was going to be tough since my wood knowledge is pretty shallow, so I hit up the gallery and came across Raul Guzman Jr.'s Oliver Cromwell*. I have seen this model before and absolutely love it, so I PM'ed him and he was nice enough to provide me a "who's who" of the types of wood used. I pretty much ended up using the same wood list since I liked it so much, and added a couple other types.
Once I knew what types I was going to use, I set out breaking everything down into sizes and types using the plans and came up with this list**. The only part (I think) that I missed was the gun carriages, but I'm going to wait and see how things play out and see what I would like to use. I've ordered everything from the Lumberyard and qty's in parenthesis are for 12 inch+ lengths- which will give me enough to screw up with and yet probably finish.
