  1. John, Just getting caught up on your progress after being offline for the last two weeks. Looks fantastic. You're making it hard not to order one of these right now!
  2. I neglected to take pictures of the construction of the next part but each side of the paddle wheel arches is made of two pieces of wood with a butt joint. The reason for this is that the grain of the wood changes 90 deg. to allow for easier shaping against the former that I installed on the deck previously. Painted and installed (the unpainted section gets covered):
  3. Thanks Jim. Organized, not the way I would describe it! Sometime it looks like a tornado touched down on my work bench but I try to keep things in order.
  4. It is about time to start gluing some parts to the deck and making Bob look like a 3D model. These are formers that are glued to the deck to help guide the shape of the aft walls. And here is a drawer full of some parts that will be installed soon:
  5. Jerry, I am enjoying your beautiful build and I am happy to see that you worked everything out with the pictures. Happy modeling! Jared
  6. Nice recovery on the plank size mishap. Good thing you were able to catch it before it was too late. I am assuming they got more consistent over the years as the wood in the newer kit was very uniform at 5mm widths. Between your build and Keith's I am more and more convinced that I had an easier model to build than you guys do yet you are doing a great job!
  7. Keith, this picture is for you..... No it's not what you're thinking.... To add some color to the logs! "Hmmm... my foot smells funny!"
  8. Leave it to you all to stink up the place (especially Keith) :D :D :D Yeah I was reminded yesterday all too well that they know logs when I mowed the lawn. I decided against that level of authenticity and left them outside. I will stick with the ones I made instead!
  9. Well Bob needs some wood to burn so I had to stock up! They included some kind of rough round wood/fiber that almost seems like a grass similar to bamboo? Not sure what it is really. I cut it into approximately 1/4 pieces but not too exact as to attempt to add some realism. Then I glued a piece of tape up side down on a piece of scrap wood and started my wood pile. After I got the base layer down I added wood glue that dries clear in the areas that I wanted to add more layers of logs. The kit called for two stacks of lumber, one on each side of the engine room. And the reaction from the audience when I finished...... Can't you see the excitement!
  10. I have to practice that wrist thingy, I have the same pile of wood on the floor as Keith!
  11. Gleason, thanks for posting pictures of your model. I looked for ages trying to find some finished examples of the kit and had all but given up. Looks like you did a first rate job building her. I'm not sure what makes it an "easy" kit as I lack confidence in my abilities since I am so new to this hobby but I am enjoying the challenge.
  12. Well that makes it 3 votes to 0 in favor of the added wood grain so continue I shall.... It seems that Bob has many faces? Vacation starts in 6 days and counting. I won't be able to build for a couple weeks but at least I will be on a ship!
  13. Shift work is no fun but sometimes necessary. No race at all and I will definitely be slowing down between vacation and moving. The new house has a HUGE yard so I will probably spend most of the summer outside instead of modeling. As for the Syren my plan is for that to be my gateway from these smaller easier builds to the more complex tall ships. After that I might have the confidence to tackle my Victory??? Although this was slightly derailed when my in-laws got me a Corel Ranger as a gift so I think that moved ahead of the Syren (which I have yet to purchase).
  14. Thanks for the feedback Wayne! That is now one vote to continue.....
  15. Now to build some risers for the engine room to sit on. These were made out of two rectangles that were cut out of the pre printed sheets of wood and some 1/16" square basswood. And the approximate location on the deck... And now painted:
  16. Time to build the engine room and this was a tough one.... I had to make a (drum roll) rectangle! Don't worry there were no permanent injuries as a result of this daring task! After I painted the engine room I decided it was too plain looking and the wall lacked texture so I added vertical planks to the wall for texture: And now painted again: I would appreciate some feedback on how this looks. I have not decided if I want to continue to add this to the remainder of the walls or not.
  17. Yeah, there are some holes in the instructions but I have no room to complain. I am still looking forward to being spoiled by the instructions with the Syren. At a glance it looked like a combination of construction steps and a "how to" on model ship building. Oh Sarah is most definitely going. We have been on the opposite work shifts from one another for months so we need some time together to catch up! Sounds like you were fortunate to be able to bring the dogs with you. I wish there was a way we could bring them along so instead we hired a house sitter that will live at our home and take care of the dogs, feed the fish and birds etc. We could have bought some nice Byrnes tools for what that cost but it's worth it to keep them all safe and happy.
  18. As usual I am a little late to the party but I wanted to add my congratulations to you as well. Bob sure does clean up nice! Excellent work! Jared
  19. It may be "quick and dirty" but it sure looks more thought out and better made than most stuff you find in the stores! Excellent job and thanks for sharing the details. It gives me some good ideas for the future when I get a chance to better organize my workspace.
  20. John, Wayne and Keith, thanks for the compliments and yes the instructions are much better than the Swift had. Harvey, no dice, this one is on my dime. The last two were paid by the company though. Thanks Jim, I'll have to go back and look at your pictures for the thousandth time!
  21. It's good to hear that you have a spot to work while you wait. I am going on a two week vacation out of the country next week and as soon as I get back I am moving into a new house so I am about to experience some serious disruption to my modeling as well. Did you have to build a boiler for yours or did the sheathing cover the area where the boiler would have been?
  22. Thanks Jim and it's good to hear you are back at it! I assume you finally got moved and are getting settled? I look forward to the completed photos!
  23. I have only built one model so far that had ply bulwarks and I didn't have any of the issues that you described so I must have just got lucky I suppose. I have seen a number of the veterans on this site recommend replacing the ply pieces with bass. Here is a link to a build where he did just that: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/997-swift-by-themadchemist-artesania-latina-virginia-pilot-boat-1805-older-version/page-16 Take a look at post #232 Good luck!
  24. Looking great so far! I am enjoying your build! That is a really neat cabinet/stand you made. Any more details on the construction? Jared
