the last 24 hours has been a steep learning curve, learnin to spraypaint, stayed up all night try to get it right, a combination os using a very cheap gun, and the incorrect thinners for the type of paint i am using, also not knowing what im doing hasnt helped, but at last i think i am getting somewhere

Lawrence, my reason is that by the time i get to the hull, i might have learnt how to paint

True, I couldn't have done it without your help Nigel.. Maple Syrup !  boy was I on the wrong tack there...

How I arrived at the boats name is in the edit to my post over-leaf, yup at almost 2 in the morning!!

Thanks for the info link Jay, I like that little boats have a great history too.

My next ship will give you a laugh when you get to its name... that's the only hint you are getting.. tis a good hint too judged by our last few posts!

So here is last night's dry fitting of the bulkheads, as you can see, bulkheads G-K do not sit down in their slots.

The next series of pictures are of the center keel after pressing. She still is a good 1/32" off of being straight, so I am going to score, glue and clamp her for about 24-48 hours and see how that comes out.

In doing all this, the biggest problem I have come across tonight is that bulkheads G-K are significantly cupped. Pressing them is not out of the question but the bigger issue I am running into, is that unlike newer kits, my bulkhead and false keel are all made out of true lumber and are not plywood. Fixing plywood is much simpler than fixing such thin pieces of wood that have sat in a box since 1999. So with that said, we will see how the keel turns out when I pull it out of the clamps, scoring is not an option as with the bulkheads I would have to run with the grain, whereas with the keel I was running across the grain. In the meantime I will be cutting out my keel, stem and stern post and making templates to transfer them onto the Wenge wood that I have selected as their replacement.

Any thoughts are more than welcome. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say, in the meantime, I'll keep working away because there is always something that needs to be done in the shipyard.

    Warm regards,

    Bill

Got around to getting the deck set up, interesting set up suggested by Corel.  I used the deck markers to line up the bulkheads, worked pretty well.  I added the walnut strips around the keel, this is a fun ship to build so far.  Wish I had more time but lately have had virtually no free time to work on the ships.

I changed direction literally from North to South.. perhaps you mean change direction mentally.. ie Poles as in Poland perhaps (boat does have a somewhat Baltic look about it) ?

Dang, Nigel that's 3 hours wasted looking for fishing boats with Maple Syrup in the name!

    See ye tomorrow folks

    Eamonn

Edit:  had a last look (kept thinking along original lines ie Pole = North Pole = Artic, add  Canada & Women and you get High Canadian Latitudes and I think I've found her! or at least something darn close

    Is it Calanus ?

Funnily enough I did wonder whether someone would call a trawler 'babe magnet' as it fits with the clues.Unfortunately my search revealed nothing, some rather unusual pics but no trawler. My brain has reached meltdown looking at pics,I will have another look tomorrow

    Kind Regards Nigel

    P.S. Eamonn,I might be wrong,but I have a feeling you won't find maple syrup in the name,just a hunch

    Nope, Jud.

Eamonn, nope--in relation to your earlier guess: consider Poles and my "change direction" hint...

None of the clues will be in her name but they will help with figuring out where she sailed....

Yeah Greg - although as I mentioned before they are all different .

Maury - I'm using the Byrnes Saw instead of the Mill.

    Using the Timberhead Jig

Before the questions are asked about how I use the Timberhead Jig - here's how.

    1. I file the two inboard and outboard tapers using the wide slot :

    2. I transfer the piece to the narrow slot and file the fore and aft tapers :

    3. I cut the shoulders for the moldings using a sharp flat Xacto chisel :

    4. The shoulders are rounded off with a needle file :

    5. Using the jig I cut the top of the lower step all around on the Byrnes table saw :

    6. I cut the piece to length :

    7. Using the chisel I cut the lower step to size :

    8. Finally I round off the corners of the step to fit the oval hole cut through the planksheer :

Thanks for checking in again Michael, Jeff and Brian.

    Making the Timberheads

There are 40 Timberheads to fit on Vulture - 16 on the forecastle and 24 on the quarterdeck. Almost every one has different angles cut into them, as they are vertical to the frames but are also following the sheer of the decks in the longitudinal direction.

I made a jig to hold the pieces while I cut and file them to shape. The jig's angles will be recut as I progress along each deck - it remains to be seen whether this idea will work, but I'm fairly confident it will.

I've cut a shoulder into the bottom of them to give them added strength where they go through the planksheers. They also fit into the top of each frame by 1.5mm :

The first one fitted - only 39 to go   :

Well done, Augie.  And good advice on pre-bending the planks.   Ok.. Novemeber is like over in 30 some hours so you only have to hold out for a bit longer.  December will be better.

She looks awesome Augie. I may have to switch from PVA to CA for planking based how well you like using it.
Take care and let's put this month behind us.

Gee, maybe I should rip it off and do it still again!!!!  No, I'm tired of notches.  I know Wes mentioned in a recent update (on his beautiful hatches for his Connie) that he had cut some slivers down to 1mm.  I got a couple at 0.8

John-  I'm a thick CA guy when it comes to planking.  Easy to handle, neat and doesn't penetrate right through the wood (in this case, basswood).  Holds like iron after 30 seconds so there's no fooling with clamps.  One or two copious applications of acetone will soften it enough to remove a plank.  Then a sharp exacto blade, a little sanding, brute force and superstition and you're back to square one.  Oh, make sure to extinguish the 'smoking lamp'.

Thanks for all the well-wishes.  Hoping to get back to a normal pace now.  Frankly, November was a month I'd just as soon forget.

I had a message from the paint shop yesterday and they are waiting for one of the colours
I may not get it until towards the end of next week so I will take it day by day
My ribs are still fairly sore and the Physio has given me some exercises to do to help my back
I therefore have plenty to do
