You might be right Jan,that's why she isn't on their current ship list,but she is on page 129 on this thread   I can't decide whether the bridge wings have still to be fitted after the launching

btw Smit also did some ships for Arklow (around 1980, which fits in nively with my conclusion above)

Can't keep away can I   Going out on a bit of a limb here,the pedalo would have been easier Eamonn   I think we are looking at another Arklow shipping vessel and the shipyard is Barkmeijer Stroobos BV.The problem being they have built several vessels of this type for Arklow,and I can't find the pic.

Nope, I didn't check the large pic. And thinking of a Dutch wharf (Ferus Smit is indeed neer Grongingen: unbelievable that seegoing ships are build over there....) I was inclined to see red white and blue. Never thought of green and orange
And for those not understanding what I mean: check where the A is pointing (and zoom in, to understand why this wharf launches sideways)

I've completed the upper hull planking on the starboard side and done the treenailing on that side, as well. All of the procedures followed the methods used on the port side earlier ( boxwood planking, caulking simulated with pencil, treenails simulated with Elmers walnut filler, coat of Wipe-on Poly as a sealer). Finishing a section of treenailing always feels good,like when you stop banging your head against a wall. 
 
Now it's on to the starboard wale and some stern planking, before tackling the lower planking.

Well actually no sorry Eamonn,I was away from the PC up until 30minutes ago,I read your post and then chuckled when I saw the pic,I had seen it while searching for one of the others,anyway beats looking at pictures of someone having a BBQ next to their Airstream caravan   .I may be a little while I have something in mind to beat 1hr 40 mins

Yes it is Hiei,not ypically Japanese in appearance at least not in this photo before all the platforms were added to the tripod mast.Congratulations Eamonn,when I found the last one,at first I googled Airstream boat,I ended up looking through everyone's holiday snaps and didn't find it

Thank you Eamonn.Perhaps a few too many clues to start with.As soon as discovered the colours were Arklow Shipping and I had the year,it was fairly simple to find.I shall post a new pick later on today.

If I remember correctly, the 'Sea Confidence' had both anchors down and swung the wrong way as the wind strengthened, giving her a foul hawse, which is why she ended up so close to the beach.  Only those who have been to sea on deck will probably realise the feat of seamanship by the mate in being able to clear a foul hawse under those sea conditions - with the added fun of knowing that your ship was drifting ashore and wouldshortly be making a twin for the 'Pasha Bulker' if you don't get it done by yesterday at the latest.

The rumours that I created this color in celebration of Halloween are grossly exaggerated.  Actually, it's quite a bit redder than it appears in the photo.  It is a combination of Model Shipways bulwark red and black under a coat of Model Master flat clear lacquer.

Wes, I rather suspect more a touch of  'Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog..' for that Special Red, than Winsor & 'Newt'on

A little diversion prior to activating the sawmill for planking.
 
I developed a red color for the bulwarks using acrylic paints and some voodoo incantations.  I like the color and it's dead flat.  Here, 7 coats have been applied:
 

 

 
A sufficient quantity has been prepared to serve the whole build.
 
I always hate these photos as it appears that mankind has not yet invented masking tape  
 
Planking will begin shortly starting with the counter at the stern.

Back to business on Essex. A small update. I've installed the wale on the port side ( the stern still needs to trimmed). The wale is made of three strakes of boxwood. Later, it will be painted black. Now it's back to the starboard side and maybe some stern planking.

As you can see, I have completed working the shear into the hull, now I'm ready to start shaping the sides of the hull.  I will continually check the shape of the hull to insure it conforms to the pattern at each station.

Mainmast ratlines completed. I have however discovered a bit of a boo-boo I've made. The catharpins I've installed on the Foremast and Mainmast are a bit too low and should be two 'rungs' higher in each case. Not disastrous but slightly annoyed I made the error. Never mind.
 
Onto the mizzen mast, which has no ratlines added as of yet. So I suspect it will be a week or so before completion.

Not exactly record breaking progress this weekend.  But Chapter 4 has been completed.
 
There are a series of sheaves, 3 per side, that pass through the hull.  Confed has simulated sheaves that add some nice detail.
 
Additional framing was installed to serve as a backing for the sheaves both inside and outside the hull.  Then the laser cut 'shells' were fitted with small slivers of wood to simulate the sheave itself.  These assemblies were glued on to the framing and #68 holes drilled through the hull.  The inner sheave assemblies will not be placed until later after the inside bulwarks are faired.  The sheave shells or housings are 1/16" thick and will match the eventual hull planking.

In the next photo, I've laid a plank on top so you can see the effect we'll achieve once the planking is in place:
 

 
As I've often said, the smaller things get, the longer they take    .  Overall, I'm pleased with this detail.
 
The next task will be to plank above the wales.  But, in order to delay that as long as possible, I plan to play with some paint first to see where I'm going on the bulwarks colorwise.  Plus, since it's been almost 2 years since I've planked a hull, I need to psyche up and try to recall how I did it the last time (haven't a clue). 
 
In the meanwhile, I wish my English and European friends all the best of luck in weathering the current storm.  Batten the hatches and stay dry!
